System element
A system is characterized by two basic properties:
1) The system’s behavior2) The system’s compositional structure.
RDS-structures describe the system’s compositional structure based on part-of relations, and not its behavior.
The resolution level at which the system is modelled is dependent on the availability of and need for detailed design information regarding the design. As a rule of thumb, a system is divided into system elements typically comprising between 5 and 25 system elements. If a system is made of more than 25 system elements, further division is often advised.

Prefix AspectLibrary Description
The designation of a systems functional composition in a tree structure build of main systems, technical systems and component systems. This functional aspect is closely related to process diagrams which usually do not take the physical world into account
The designation of a system and how the system is constructed physically. The product aspect often have similarities with a bill of material.

A/NP
The designation of construction complex, construction entity (e.g. facilities), levels, areas, zones, and spaces shall be done by using the site of installation designation.
The point of installation structure provides a breakdown of a system of interest as a collection of locations defined by a local grid system. A point of installation structure is therefore always defined relative to a system e.g. for a facility, module, equipment, etc., and must be described in the documentation accompanying the system.
The grid system may be multi-dimensional (e.g.3D) and does not need to be uniform in its sub-division.
Reference designation syntax
The designer of the point of installation structure is free to define the grid system of the system of interest. The syntax of a point of installation structure is therefore composed of as many single level reference designations as needed.
