Farewell Year 12 Year 12 students will conclude their formal schooling next Friday. The occasion
will be marked by a special assembly commencing at 11:30am in the school
gymnasium on Friday. The Class of 2014 has been a fine group having made
many positive contributions to the life of the school and community.
Congratulations are also due to their Year Adviser Ms Desiree Cotton who,
along with parents and carers, has supported the students through their high
school years. We wish them well for the coming examinations and look forward
to joining them for the Graduation Dinner at the RSL on Friday 7 November. At
this assembly the Captains for 2015 will also be announced.
Green Team supports Fire Brigade Members of our school Green Team have been involved in a number of
projects this year. Most recently they put their hand to welding where they
repaired and refined the design of a hose reel belonging to the Evans Head
Fire Brigade. The students learnt of the reasons for why the hose needs to be
rolled flat and set about ensuring this, and the obvious need for ease and
speed of operation were factored into their work. Thanks to the students
involved for a job well done – with benefits to our whole community. The Green
Team is a group of students usually in Year 9, and sometimes in Year 10, who
have identified trades as their future preferred occupation. One day per week
they participate in projects where they learn valuable trade skills. To gain a
place on the team the students need to apply, be successful in interview and
complete their Work Place Health & Safety Certificate (which is also required in
trade industries in life after school). Successful application to studies outside of
the Green Team work is also a mandated requirement. The Green Team
program has been replicated in schools across NSW based on the success of
the program at Evans River.
Technology use in classes Many parents are aware the Federal government previously had a program in
place where students were issued laptops in Year 9. The laptops were used in
classes through until the end of Year 12. Discussions are occurring at school at
present surrounding the possible introduction of our own program. One concept
being considered would see students being able to purchase a device for use
from the commencement of Year 7. The relative merits of each student having
their own device, the contribution of the device to the learning process, to the
engagement of students, and the learning areas which would make use of the
device, are some of the points being considered. A particular model of laptop is
under consideration. We know now that if this concept were to proceed, and the
preferred device was to be a laptop, we would offer two purchase options to
family. A discounted upfront cost of $500 per laptop and a full price of $600

paid off at $150 per year over four years. The laptops would come with a full
suite of software. A small pool of laptops would be maintained for those who
need to borrow. This information is being shared now so parents can give
some thought to the idea, and should the school decide to proceed, families
could save or perhaps incorporate the laptop in Christmas arrangements. It is
intended the cohort of Year 7 2015 would be the first year group to participate
with Year 7 each year following. Students who will be in years 8-12 in 2015
would be able to purchase under the same arrangements but the focus of
staff use in class will commence with Year 7 2015. More information to come.

Evans Head can now rest assured that our local Fire Brigade will be able to get their fire hose into action much quicker, thanks
to the assistance of the Evans River K-12 School Green Team. The old hose winder was showing its age; Craig Tosomeen from
the Evans Head Fire Brigade told me that “the tighter the hose is wound the better and faster it rolls off the reel.” However their
reel was not allowing the hose to roll off freely, it was catching on the winder. The brigade knew that this could be a problem in
an emergency, then the Green Team came to their rescue. Their trusty leader Craig Gillespie and his side kick Ross McFarlane
figured out the engineering needed to solve the winder problem. Working with the Green Team students they rejuvenated the
winder with the addition of protective sleeves on the winder to prevent the hose catching. It’s great to see how our community
works together, great work all round.
