A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL

YEAR 12 GRADUATIONPAYMENT REMINDERFinal day for payment of

Year 12 Graduati on ti ckets is Friday 2 November.

This week we have farewelled the Year 12 students at our Graduati on Mass at St David’s Church, which was followed by our formal Year 12 Breakfast and Farewell Assembly on Tuesday morning. My grateful thanks go to all the staff and students involved in the organisati on of the important rites of passage for our young men and women.

Many thanks also to Fr. George Ryan for leading our Mass and inviti ng us to use the Tea Tree Gully Parish Church and faciliti es. It was wonderful to see so many proud parents during the evening and my sincere congratulati ons to all of the Year 12 Award winners.

JUNIOR RELAY FOR LIFEOn Wednesday aft ernoon this week the vast majority of our Year 8 and Year 9 students enjoyed parti cipati ng in the inaugural Junior Relay for Life at Gleeson College. All proceeds from the aft er lunch acti viti es will be donated to the Cancer Council. This year Gleeson College has raised in excess of $20,000 for the worthy charity. My thanks to all the staff and students involved on the day – a wonderful eff ort! *Full report and photographs in next week’s issue of The Globe*

MODERATION DAY:WEDNESDAY 31 OCTOBERThis week all students and parents would have received an email noti ce regarding the Student Free Day next Wednesday 31 October. As explained in the email, the development of the Performance Standards and the Moderati on Processes at Gleeson College have been two innovati ve processes which will enhance student learning and bring consistency to teacher assessments.

“As a key development of the Australian Curriculum and the Teaching / Learning standards at Gleeson College, the teachers will be involved in a Moderati on Day for all the subjects taught from Year 8 – 10 on 31 October 2012. These meeti ngs have been designed to compare the student results to the Gleeson College Performance Standards developed for all subjects last year. The day will be an opportunity for teachers to evaluate the implementati on of the Australian Curriculum, as well as assessing their consistency in grade allocati ons and sharing best practi ce with one another. Our intenti on is to conti nue to develop this Moderati on concept and model into the future to enhance the teaching and learning outcomes at Gleeson College. The teachers at Gleeson College are keen professional learners and this process will be of great benefi t to the consistency of student learning and assessment in all subjects.”

OCTOBER:MONTH OF THE HOLY ROSARY By traditi on, the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to a certain devoti on. The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary, one of the best known of all Catholic devoti ons. October includes the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 7). The best way to celebrate the month is, of course, to pray the rosary, but these additi onal prayers can be incorporated into our daily prayers during this month, too.

The use of beads or knott ed ropes to count large numbers of prayers comes from the earliest days of Christi anity, but the Rosary as we know it today emerged in the second thousand years of Church history. The full Rosary consists of 150 Hail Marys, divided into three sets of 50, which are further divided into fi ve sets of 10 (a decade).

Traditi onally, the Rosary is divided into three sets of Mysteries: Joyful (recited on Monday and Thursday, and Sunday from Advent unti l Lent); Sorrowful (Tuesday and Friday, and Sunday during Lent); and Glorious (Wednesday and Saturday, and Sunday from Easter unti l Advent).

Today, together we confi rm that the Holy Rosary is not a pious practi ce banished to the past, like prayers of other ti mes thought of with nostalgia. Instead, the Rosary is experiencing a new Springti me. Without a doubt, this is one of the most eloquent signs of love that the young generati on nourish for Jesus and his Mother, Mary. In the current world this prayer helps to put Christ at the centre, as Mary did. When reciti ng the Rosary, the important and meaningful moments of salvati on history are relived. The various steps of Christ's mission are traced. With Mary the heart is oriented toward the mystery of Jesus. Christ is put at the centre of our life, of our ti me, of our city, through the contemplati on and meditati on of his Holy Mysteries of joy, light, sorrow and glory. May Mary help us to welcome within ourselves the grace emanati ng from these Mysteries, so that through us we can infl uence society, beginning with our daily relati onships, and raise them above so many negati ve forces, thus opening others to God’s message of love. The Rosary, when it is prayed in an authenti c way brings peace and reconciliati on, especially during sad and challenging ti mes in our lives. (adapted from: www.catholicculture.org)

GALLANT ROUND 2 EFFORT FROM YEAR 8 KO BASKETBALLERSAft er a stellar performance against Heathfi eld HS in Round 1 last term, Gleeson College secured the chance to meet Trinity College in the second round of the SSSSA State Knockout Basketball Competi ti on at the Golden Grove Rec Centre in Week 1 of this term.

There were many highlights, both in Round 1 and 2, however a standout performer for the team was the talented Joseph Maguire (8 HMHAU). Joseph’s asserti ve drive through the key and defence to successfully lay-up and score against Trinity was brilliant, and he was ably supported by some great defensive eff orts and speedy off ensive breaks by Brodie North (8 DMACK) and Thomas Wood (8 MMMIT). Clever play from Liam Stanton (8 DMRAN) was great to watch and Matt hew Chalmers (8 FMCAR) oft en caught Trinity’s defence out with his clever left handed skills. Jayden Carrigg (8 MMMIT), Cameron Forshaw (8 DMMCC) and Brandon Winship (8 DMRAN) all worked ti relessly at both ends of the court, assisti ng the team greatly.

However, the fi nal bell saw Trinity College take the hard-fought victory and progress to the next round of the competi ti on.
