Need for Industrialization• The War of 1812 showed
the U.S. that it could not rely on imports for finished products.
• The U.S. began to develop its own industries.
• The Industrial Revolution was a period of rapid industrial growth in the early 1800’s.

Eli Whitney• Invented the concept
of interchangeable parts.
• Important product parts (like guns) were made exactly the same so individual parts could be changed as needed.
• Made products cheaper

Mass Production
• On an assembly line, a large number of goods are made at one time and all the same.
• This made products cheaper than handmade items.

Importance of Change
• Because they were cheaper to produce, products became affordable to more people.
• The growth of this Factory System was found in the North.
• North became more industrialized than the South.

Agricultural InventionsCotton Gin
• Invented by Eli Whitney.
• Removed the cotton seed from the fiber. More cotton could be processed in a shorter period of time.

King Cotton• The Cotton Gin caused the demand for
cotton to increase a great deal.
• It also increased the demand for farmland and for slaves.

Agricultural Inventions Steel Plow
• Invented by John Deere
• Made planting seeds faster.

Agricultural Inventions Mechanical Reaper
• Invented by Cyrus McCormick• His timesaving invention allowed
farmers to more than double their crop size of wheat and grains.

Effects of the Industrial Revolution
• More and more people moved to cities where there were factory jobs.
• This was found more in the North than in the South which remained agricultural.
• Products mass produced became more affordable.
• As more money was made, machines were improved and new ones invented.
