Welcome to the February issue of in.Design.

in this issue, we examine interior design in the public sector and on page 11 Mark Ludmon takes a look at a couple of projects which

prove that innovation and creative design need not be left out of the equation when projects are funded with public money.

in.Her Life features Dorothee Junkin, designer and founder of Architecta Ltd, who has described a busy seven day week! she clearly

loves what she does – turn to page 31 to see what she’s up to.

The British institute of interior Design has had an incredibly busy start to the new year. BiiD has announced an exciting one day

conference entitled ‘Celebrating British Design’ which will take place in June (page 19), where it will also announce the Honorary

Fellowships for 2012 to recognise those who have had a profound impact on the interior design profession (page 47).

With the weather still so mild, our thoughts have already turned to the great outdoors; for the outdoor furniture industry, sustainable

and weatherproof are the buzz words for this season. The Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association tells us about its new Made Aware

scheme which covers sustainability issues, and gloster focuses on the trend for all-year-round furniture which can withstand the wet

British winters. Turn to page 49 to find out more.

And finally a good-bye… this is my last issue as editor of in.Design. i’m handing over the reins to Mark Ludmon, who’s been the

Managing editor on the magazine since september last year. Although i am sad to leave in.Design, i’ve had a great time working on it

and i know that i’m leaving it in very safe hands with Mark. i wish you all lots of success for the future.

Having worked on public-sectorprojects such as schools, colleges and youth trainingcentres, Liverpool-basedinteriors and fit-out consultancy

Team a go-go understands the importanceof balancing visual impact with value formoney and social impact – key factorswhen public money is involved. This isdemonstrated in its work on The Fuse inPartington in Trafford in west Manchester– a £4 million scheme supported by theBig Lottery Fund under the MyPlace youthcentre programme. Part of the Trafford YouthVillage, it is more than just a youth centrebut a centre for the performing arts, sports, recreation and business with a focus onpeople aged 11 to 19.

The project was led by ellis WilliamsArchitects (eWA), working with BAMConstruction, structural engineers DoylePartnership, mechanical and electricalconsulting engineers steven Hunt &Associates and quantity surveyor AAProjects. Team a go-go was appointed toconsult with young people and design andimplement the interiors. “Team a go-go isrenowned for emphasising the effect thatgood design can have on service delivery,”points out managing director Kate stewart.

Designer sam Harry adds: “Our challengewas to create a space suitable for youngpeople but not childlike. We worked withthe client group to develop ways in whichthe building could generate income fromhires from businesses and the community.”in partnership with eWA, Team a go-gochallenged some of the space divisionsand reconfigured the layout to enable easysupervision of a man “chill zone”, removingbarriers between staff and young people.

“Our workshops with the young peoplefound that most youth centres are good atproviding activities for boys but that girlswant a quieter space to sit and chat, so wecreated a bespoke seating pod which givesthe feel of being in a smaller lounge spacebut is open enough for discrete supervision,”sam explains.

The key architectural theme to the buildingis that it is a series of cubes thrown in the airand dropped to form a collection of zones. These zones are coded on the outside bytheir different colours and textures, and theinterior scheme extended this use of colourto match different activities whether they bechill zone, sports zone, performance zone oradmin zone.

The meeting room is easily transformedat night into a space for young people by

the specification of a folding table andluxury chairs. The room has a 3D TV and thestorage wall conceals large bean bags thatare brought out when the table is put away.A full-length curtain can be drawn roundthe room at night instead of closing the bi-folding wall, making a more intimate space.Other parts of The Fuse include a dancestudio, a recording studio, practice rooms, sports facilities, a theatre and a café. A“green room” attached to the performancespace was developed as a space whereyoung people can learn skills such ashairdressing and beauty.

Team a go-go worked in partnership withthe architects and contractor on furnitureprocurement, with the young people andstaff consulted through workshops. This ledto specifying colours and finishes includingflooring, lighting, walls, washrooms, lockers, acoustic treatments and loose and fixeditems such as bespoke shop-fit elements.“Working with a small budget, our design

team have met the clients’ aspirationsand created a vibrant and sustainableenvironment for the whole community,”Kate adds.

A more large-scale community projecthas been completed in Rotherhithe, eastLondon. Canada Water Library was built bysouthwark Council with £14.1 million ofpublic money, using one of the world’s toparchitects, Piers gough, partner at CZWg.The stunning inverted pyramid shape of thebuilding means the interior is far larger thanthe restricted footprint. From the double-height atrium, a central spiral staircaseleads up to the main library floor, lined withtimber that combines linear and circulardesigns. On the library floor, the children andyoung people’s areas have been designedas flexible spaces adaptable for differentactivities. On the ground floor, there is a caféto encourage people to enter the buildingfrom the new plaza developed as part of thearea’s regeneration. t

Karndean Designflooring, theworld’s leading supplier ofluxury vinyl tiles (LVT), is beingincreasingly specified fornewbuild and refurbishment

private and public healthcare projects.

Karndean’s six ranges offer a variety oflight, mid and dark wood and stone effectvinyl planks and tiles which designersare finding invaluable when developinginterior schemes for healthcare applications. With durability, cleanliness and ease ofmaintenance all taken care of, KarndeanDesignflooring is being used to createpractical and attractive environments thatbenefit both patients and staff.

From waiting areas and corridors to familyrooms and private wards, design flooringlike Karndean’s Van gogh range gives

designers the freedom to combine style andfunctionality to create workable healthcarespaces.

Paul Barratt, Commercial sales Directorfor Karndean Designflooring comments:“Designers are quickly realising thatfloorcoverings like LVT are the perfect choicefor hospitals, care homes and day centres.Whilst sheet materials are used for operatingtheatres and other sterile areas, the patientand visitor oriented rooms can really benefitfrom the warm and inviting tones of a woodor stone effect flooring which can make thespace feel less clinical.

“There are numerous practical benefits tousing Karndean Designflooring in communalareas, bedrooms, corridors and waitingareas. it is quiet underfoot and has a durablewear of between 0.55 and 0.7mm which

means it can withstand the wheels ofhospital beds and trolleys.

“Care homes in particular have traditionallybeen fitted with carpet tiles. The fibrousnature of this material can harbour dampfrom spillages, creating the perfect breedingground for bacteria. Designflooring helps tocontrol bacteria hotspots underfoot, givingstaff an easy to clean surface which makesinfection control as simple as possible.”

By mixing the textures and colours of twoor more luxury vinyl tiles, designers canimplement zoning in large open spaces suchas waiting areas, as well as using strips ofcolour to create path finding systems alongcorridors.

The building also features a 150-seatertheatre, meeting rooms and other flexiblespaces. “The library is an indoor public spaceopen to everyone, where you find wonderfulthings you weren’t necessarily looking for,”Piers says. “it is a futuristic Pandora’s box ofpossibilities.”

CZWg worked on the interior designwith companies such Junckers and TheAccess Flooring Company on flooring,ironmongery2u, and ecophon for the mainacoustic ceiling.

The café is the work of Barista Design, which installed a solid steel chassis clad inpolished stainless steel, manufactured initaly, with a 50mm granite worktop and aCorian front. CZWg worked with RainbowDesign on furniture throughout the building, including the shelving. it supplied bespokeloose furniture such as desks, sofas, coffeetables, stacking chairs, flip-top tables as wellas high tables and bar stools. it matched thebold colours of the flooring and décor, withupholstery ranging from purples and blues toshades of green.

Lighting was the work of consultants HoareLea, which attempted to use natural lightfrom the windows above as much aspossible, particularly for the central spiralstaircase.

“We wanted the materials and structureto be the feature. We looked to light itin the most simplistic and clean way wecan,” explains partner Dominic Meyrick. However, he says it was decided to enhancethe natural daylight with fluorescent ovaliguzzini pendants providing a uniform whiteglow. suspended by four wires runningthrough a conduit, the lights appear to pulldown the curved ceiling. Other innovationsinclude LeD strips embedded in thebookcases that wash light down the frontof each cabinet, illuminating each of thebook spines. “We wanted to create a bit ofambience and drama,” Dominic adds. Thelighting design means it has achieved anincredible level of energy efficiency withless than two watts per square metre – animportant objective for southwark Council.“We managed to keep it to that and stillmake it look funky,” Dominic adds. spiral staircase at Canada Water Library

Magical fields of lighttransformed the lawns atthe Holburne Museum inBath for six weeks untilearly January. Fibre optic

stems lay dormant during the daytime butat night they flowered with gentle rhythmsof light. it was the latest incarnation of aninstallation created by lighting designerBruce Munro who first devised the Fieldof Light for the Brilliant! exhibition at theVictoria & Albert Museum in London in 2004.

Further versions appeared such as a 10-acredisplay at Long Knoll Field in Wiltshire andat the eden Project in Cornwall in 2008 and2009.

Bruce was inspired by travelling through theAustralian red desert 18 years ago whereroadside campsites punctuated the barrenlandscape with sprinkler-fed oases of green, each displaying a larger-then-life sculpturesuch as a giant banana or a sheep. He wasintrigued by the way the desert was barren

until it rained and then, as if from nowhere, dormant seeds would burst into bloom. Hedescribes Field of Light as being like a giantsurreal campsite banana, an alien installationin the midst of nature. it is made of acrylicstems with fibre optic cables runningthrough them, each topped by a frostedacrylic ball, which lie dormant like dry desertseeds in the daytime but light up at night.each cluster of stems is illuminated by anexternal projector on a colour wheel as thestems themselves hold no electric power t

at all. At the Holburne, there were 5,220stems of light. To maximise reflections in ericParry’s glass extension, Munro placed narrowsets of extra stems indoors, topped withclear spheres and fixed in small plinths.

Art and lighting design come together ina new installation created by ACT LightingDesign along the Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris where 200 plane treeslining the street have been transformed intolight sculptures. each tree is encircled bythree rings of LeD lighting that add drama, movement and colour to the natural organicform of the tree. During daylight, the innerlights of each ring emit a soft glow whilegarlands of small mirrors sparkle as theymove freely in the breeze. At dusk, vibrantprogrammed displays begin, using boththe inner and outer lights, continuing until2am. The entire scheme is programmableto create vastly different effects. Preciseshifts in colour and tempo can be created tofocus on one tree or to create a sequence orgroup effect, with over 80 million possiblecombinations of effects per tree.

The concept is a ring as a sign of unionand completeness, becoming a symbolof unity between man and nature. ACTLighting Design’s inspiration comes fromrespecting the tree as a living being, and sothe scheme is shaped by a need to ensurethat the trees are not damaged in any wayby the dramatic lighting intervention. it willreturn to the Champs-Élysées for the wintermonths each year until 2014.

A stunning new lighting scheme has beeninstalled on the tower of the new City Hallin Ostrava in the Czech Republic as part ofefforts to create a new cultural identity forthe country’s third largest city. The scheme,

designed by Petr KolmaÐka, has seen thefour fascias of the tower each illuminatedwith a single energy-saving Anolis RgBCWArcPad Xtreme, one of the most powerfulAnolis LeD flood fixtures available. Theyevenly light the whole surface area of eachelevation despite the challenging texture ofthe copper that clads the building, built in1930. These are washed with a selectionof beautiful colours including a standardday-to-day selection that is a combinationof eight cyan, blue and white scenesbased on the colours of Ostrava’s logo andother client specifications. The colour ofthe tower can also be changed for specialoccasions such as festivals.

The Anolis ArcPad Xtreme is a specialoutdoor fixture with two independent LeDmodules. The LeDs are densely populated, providing an extremely bright light output, and an iP67 rating that means the system

is tough enough to work even if immersedin water. The combination of RgB and whiteLeDs delivers a particularly good quality ofwhite light.

Around the top of the tower’s observationdeck are 20 units of Anolis ArcLine OutdoorOptic 40MC (multi-chip) lights that cancomplement the tower’s fascias. Two AnolisArcPower 360 drivers power the LeD units, which are controlled by a Cyber Cue system,pre-programmed with the sequences thatchange every 30 seconds. The lighting isprogrammed to switch on at dusk and off atdawn, and runs right through the night.

A more traditional approach was taken fornew lighting at st Paul’s Cathedral in Londonwhen lighting designers speirs and MajorAssociates installed a new scheme in thesouth Portico. They worked with heritagelighting specialist Dernier & Hamlyn which

Page 21: In.Design February Issue 2012

ACT Lighting Design in Champs-Élysées

manufactured a 1.6m high lantern based ona design conceived by the building’s fabricsurveyor Martin stancliffe, who was inspiredby another Dernier & Hamlyn lantern atthe Royal naval College in greenwich. Theresult is a lantern that not only illuminatesthe general area from ceramic metal halidedownlighting but also gently uplights thesouth Portico’s dome from six ceramicmetal halide aluminium reflector lamps.each of the contemporary fittings has beencarefully concealed within the body of thelantern so that the overall effect is one ofwarm, inviting light when approachingthe cathedral. speirs and Major directorMark Major adds: “Clearly it was importantto have a lantern that was sensitive tothe architecture of the portico. However, the careful design not only allows theintegration of additional lighting to achievethe correct atmosphere but also cleverlyaccommodates a technical solution t

Page 22: In.Design February Issue 2012

s

which could otherwise have had a negativeimpact on the fabric of the cathedral.”

An extensive portfolio of exterior lightingcan be found in the new catalogue fromAurora Lighting, featuring new designsfrom pathway lighting to floodlighting. newproducts include the AU-WAL417 aluminiumfixed LeD wall light and the AU-PsT110 andAU-PsT120 aluminium bollard lights withclear polycarbonate lens.

Classic and contemporary designcome together in a new collection ofitalian-manufactured exterior lightingfrom Franklite. They include the “semi-contemporary” sera range which has mattblack die-cast aluminium fittings with opalpolycarbonate diffusers to conceal the lamp. This range also includes a half-post andsingle- and double-headed lamppost. Afunky modern alternative is the Lorenz rangewhich includes a lantern in brushed marine-grade stainless steel with a transparentpolycarbonate diffuser. Franklite uses

polycarbonate diffusers to avoid the risk ofbroken glass if the lights are damaged byvandals, proving that practical solutions canbe combined with stylish design.

Mondayit’s 6.30am, but it somehow feels muchearlier than that. Over a cup of coffee i scanthrough my overflowing inbox and answerthe most pressing emails having just comeback from a trip to switzerland. At 9.30ami set off to hunt for some unique furniturepieces in my favourite antique and vintageshowrooms. especially when it comes toone-offs, i always prefer to see them inperson. A potential new client has justbought a lovely country property just outsideof London and asked for suggestions for afew additional key pieces to supplementthe current set of absolutely exquisitefurniture. With this type of client finding theright pieces could quickly turn into a moreextensive redesign. My first stop is PimlicoRoad. After a light lunch at DaylesfordOrganic i tour through more showrooms inChelsea and Fulham, scribbling notes aboutnew finds in my little black book and takingquick snaps with my iPhone to remindmyself of special finds later.

i am back in the studio in the evening, scanning through data online and checkingthe stock of the international antique andvintage dealers i like to source from. Myhusband, an architect, has a big deadlinecoming up and is working late too. We bothunderstand the nature and demands of thedesign profession and can relate to beingpassionate about what we do. Tonight wewon’t be able to, but most nights we havedinner together and talk about our day.

tuesdayi spend the first half of the morning catchingup with my emails. i have received twoenquiries from potential residential clientsand a follow-up from a commercial clientwith whom i’ve been discussing theredesign of a club, bar and restaurant projectin Central London. As requested a meetingthis afternoon was hastily arranged andluckily fitted in with my schedule as i alreadyhave another meeting later with a clientfor whom Architecta just finished a privateresidence in st. John‘s Wood. it’s one of thelast meetings for a wonderful apartmentin a listed building bordering Regent’s Parkand i need to walk with the client and the

contractor through the property to checkif the snagging list has been dealt withsufficiently. it’s always the little things in theend that require particular attention. i hatethe idea of a client walking away and beingnot 100% happy with the result. i really dotry to exceed my clients‘ expectations asthey could recommend Architecta to theirfriends or aquaintances and that’s a greatway to gain future projects.

early evening i meet up with my husband atBond street and we go to an art exhibitionin Cork street. i like to be in-the-know aboutnew artists and their work, as the London

art scene is very interesting and ofteninspiring too.

WednesdayYesterday’s meeting regarding thecommercial project went well. i sit down togo through my notes and try to get my headaround the requirements while in the backof my head the first design ideas alreadystart to take form. The phone rings. Afavourite contractor of mine who completedstunning properties for celebrities in film andfashion, and with whom i recently workedon a large project in Highgate,

north London, has a question regardingsome last outstanding aspects. i drop whati have been doing, as i always try to lookafter the good contractors and suppliers iwork with. it’s paramount to be able to relyon them when dealing with demandingclients.

in the afternoon i call the photographer, with whom my PR has scheduled a portraitsession for the next day, to confirm thedetails. At the very last minute we find outthat the location for the shoot is unavailablethe next day. We have to postpone the shootto Friday. i make a few phone calls andadjust my schedule for the next two daysaccordingly.

thursdayToday it’s time to sit down and startworking on a concept design proposal forthe commercial project. Three floors of

club, bar and restaurant space need somethorough consideration. The morning flies bysketching, noting ideas and pulling materialsamples out of the material library. i end upsitting in the centre of a creative chaos, but ifeel like i got a solid strategy in place. i coulduse more material options, i’m thinkingsomething bold with a contemporary edge!i decide to make a spontaneous trip tomy favourite showrooms. i love browsingthrough endless piles of materials huntingfor treasures for current and upcomingprojects and as i tend to design uniquespaces for every client. i also source a lotinternationally. Recently i went to new Yorkfor a client to coordinate a custom tablemade by a renown metal sculptor and onto Los Angeles to meet a specialist furnituremanufacturer for a custom sideboard andside tables.

Fridayi get up early, gather my things for the

photo shoot and meet the photographerin London’s east end. i am excited and abit nervous as well. it turns out there wasno need to be, as the photographer, whohas worked with many celebrities, put meat ease straight away and i soon feel veryconfident posing for the shoot. it’s actuallyquite fun and we get a lot of looks frompassers-by.

After the photo shoot i am back in thestudio. Time flies by again. i meant tolook over the last tax quarter and to getthe information to the tax office, but i gotside-tracked by some last minute projectcoordination and all of a sudden it’s 7pm. ineed to rush for dinner with a friend fromnew York, who was in town for businessand will fly back tomorrow. My husbandand i take him for a lovely dinner at ModernPantry in Clerkenwell and then for drinks atthe Zetter Townhouse. it’s early on saturdaymorning, when we finally get back home.

The stunning living room in HighgateSaturdayi usually try to carve out some free timeon the weekends. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. Today i head outaround mid-morning to meet with apotential private client. i find most privateclients are very busy, they travel a lot andhave properties abroad. if their time doesn’tallow, i have to have meetings early in themornings, later in the evenings or any timeat the weekend.

i meet the couple at their recently purchasedproperty close to Kew gardens. The property

definitely needs some refurbishment, but ithas loads of character and could be turnedinto a real gem. Walking through the houseand garden all three of us get more andmore excited as we go along and concludethat i shall submit a first proposal and feestructure within a few days.

My husband has meanwhile met withfriends at Borough Market and i manageto join them for a late lunch at 3pm. Weenjoy a wonderful afternoon with friendswe haven’t seen in a while. in the evening

we meet with ex-colleagues at the hiddenexperimental Cocktail Club in Chinatown.Design ideas seem to come to life so mucheasier when one takes breaks and is nottrying too hard.

Sundayi am up early again and start assembling afirst layout concept for the mood boards forthe commercial project while my husbandsleeps in. i actually don’t mind working rightnow, as i am very excited about my ideasand can’t wait to show them to the t

When possible, sunday is myday to recharge. My husband and i try to gofor brunch, see exhibitions and visit friendsoutside of London, but while projects arebubbling i can‘t help getting stuck in now. ilove what i do.

Demand for central heatingthis year has fallen becauseof the relatively warm winter. However, while we are clearlyusing less gas, the sharp

increase in tariffs means there is littlefinancial respite for people.

As fuel costs rise, along with a huge increasein our concerns about the environment, clients are looking at more energy-efficientand eco-friendly heating options.

One company to capitalise on this trend withan innovative solution is Cheshire-basedheating company, Discrete Heat, who havedesigned and manufactured an eco-friendly,energy-saving system called Thermaskirt.

Thermaskirt replaces skirting boards andradiators in one, working with existingconventional boilers as well as renewablessuch as solar, ground source and air sourceheat pumps. t

Unlike radiators and underfloor heating, it isa simple, inconspicuous wet heating systemthat doesn’t cost a fortune to install or run,and doesn’t take up any useable wall space.

Recently installed in several ‘RetroFit forthe Future’ trials, Thermaskirt enablesrenewables such as heat pumps and solarthermal systems to be installed in existingbuildings. it can connect onto the existingplumbing circuits, eliminating the needfor radiators or impractical under floorheating.

Disruption to the infrastructure of the house

is kept to a minimum, and costly warrantyclaims are avoided as the system is entirely‘above ground’ facilitating simple repair andmaintenance.

several system integrators are now offeringThermaskirt as part of their installer package, which in turn is encouraging homeownersto take up the government grants and Feedin Tariffs on offer. Fully compliant with Bs-en442, Thermaskirt carries the Ce mark andwith the correct boiler and control system, fuels savings of up to 25% are possible.

Another company who has seen an increase

in the demand for more energy-efficientheating products, is world-renowned BisqueRadiators. There are few companies morewell-known for their beautiful designerradiators, and Bisque has been amongstthe first to combine energy efficiency withstylish design.

Bisque is introducing a new generation ofradiators for 2012. Made from re-cycledaluminium, these are the first radiators tocombine sleek italian design with energyefficient technology.

Blok and ellisse are just two of the newradiator ranges to be available nationallyfrom February 2012. With a low watercontent, they use less energy to heat upand are faster to respond to changes intemperature.

Blok is a neat and sophisticated modelradiator from on-trend rectangular columnswith a minimal wall to front-face projection.

ellisse is made from elegant, compactelliptical tubes that provide a high heatoutput. This means the radiator can beslimmer than most, which is handy wherewall space is at a premium.

The benefits of aluminium radiatorconstruction include:• space-saving: sizes can be much smallerthan typical radiators but with the sameheat output

• Lower running costs: low water contentmeans less energy is needed from theboiler to heat the water in the heatingsystem

• Radiators can be used with lowtemperature systems such as heatpumps

• greater response to thermostat control

• Quick to heat up• Less environmental impact as aluminiumcan be repeatedly re-cycled

Bisque’s Head of Design and Marketing,Barbara Payne commented: “2012 will seea move towards more energy efficient butstylish products. There has always been ademand for energy efficient radiators butuntil now it has meant a compromise onstyle. With our new range we are delightedto offer the iconic design we are known foralongside cutting edge technology.”

The year on year increase in thetrend to turn garden space into anall-year-round useable space whichbecomes an extension of the livingarea has prompted a plethora of

new launches and innovations in the gardenfurniture industry.

Where the choice of garden furniture wasonce limited to a few table and chairs inplastic designs that put function before style, today there is a huge selection of differentoutdoor furniture in beautiful materials

which is as stylish as anything within thehome.

According to the Leisure and OutdoorFurniture Association (LOFA), the majortrends for 2012 are solidly based on theenvironment, with a focus on ethicalmanufacturing processes, packaging andlabour issues. As a result, LOFA has officiallylaunched its new environmental trademark,Made Aware. The Made Aware schemeis intended to enable LOFA members toprogressively improve the environmental

and social impacts of the products theysell. This award requires outdoor furnituremanufacturers and suppliers to prove thatthey are taking progressive action to reducetheir environmental impact and to improvethe welfare of the people who make theirproducts. each year these suppliers willhave to show they are continuing to make aworthwhile improvement, and have to passstringent testing by a panel of independentjudges to ensure they can keep theprestigious Made Aware label.

in terms of other trends for 2012, theincreasing ability to use outdoor furnitureall year round due to outdoor heaters hasseen a demand for better weatherproofing. For leading outdoor furniture manufacturergloster, this has meant upholstered, yethighly waterproof outdoor lounge items.new materials and innovative technologyare driving this trend, with fully upholsteredyet highly weatherproof outdoor furniturenow becoming a practical alternative to theever-popular woven styles .

gloster pioneered this trend in 2009 bylaunching its first Outdoor Lounge Collection,Cloud; a completely upholstered but 100 percent waterproof outdoor sofa system.

Outdoor Lounge products were designedand engineered to be left outside all yearround and in all weathers without any needto cover or protect. The fabrics used for seatand back cushions is Leisuretex® – similar toa traditional PVC sling, but with the additionof 100 per cent polypropylene yarns withinthe weave to offer increased comfort. Anadditional backing layer adds to the virtuallywaterproof nature of this material andwaterproof sealing tape on every seam, ensures no water can enter the cushions.

The cushions themselves are designed to bevirtually waterproof, so no water can enterinto the cushion filling. in the unlikely casethat any water does enter, the design of thecushions – including a reticulated foam core,

mesh bases and well concealed Velcro seals– allows for it to drain away quickly.

For the 2012 season, gloster has launchedthree new collections in the UK – Asta, Lineaand Riva. All of the new ranges are designedand built to stay outdoors all year long.

According to an analysis ofBritain’s housing stock by LloydsTsB Home insurance for its MyFavourite Room competition, one in five (21%) homeowners

have taken a sledgehammer to their home’swalls in the last 10 years, while an equalproportion have similar plans afoot.

To create social spaces more conducive tomodern day lifestyles, a third (32%) havesacrificed a separate dining room, 18% haverepurposed a garage and 12% have ditcheda single-purpose kitchen.

While certain rooms are being lost, new ones are creeping onto householdparticulars. Kitchen/dining rooms – thehallmark of open plan – have grown inpopularity by 50% in a generation. Thirtypercent of today’s homes now have onewith many using it as the social hub oftheir house – 48% to entertain guests, 29%as a child’s play area and 27% to watchtelevision.

The allure of open plan pulls regardless ofa property’s age. A third of period propertyowners who’ve done work, have added anopen plan kitchen and dining room, a higherproportion than any other era of home.

Current planning applications lodged witheight district councils underscores ourobsession with changing the layout of ourhomes. A third (35%) of planned worksinvolve opening up internal spaces andmore homes are set for change in the nearfuture with research among homeownersidentifying 19% will be tearing down wallsin their homes.

The kitchen breakfast room is not theonly addition being made to the country’shousing stock. Also featuring in today’shomes are the utility room (26%), the en-suite (23%), study (20%), wet room (3%),games room/den (6%), and even gym(2%).

“Property particulars are starting to look verydifferent,” says simon Hamilton, member andinternational Director at the British instituteof interior Design. “Houses, especially olderproperties, were designed with people’s livesin mind, with set rooms for set activities, but as times change so does what we wantfrom our homes. With our increasingly hecticlifestyles, convenience and sociability havebecome key – which is why kitchen dinersand games rooms have grown in popularity.in the next 10 years, the majority of houseswill be designed in this style.”

Recognising that open spaces will maketheir property more saleable, 10% havespent over £35k adapting their propertieswith 5% investing over £50k. The work ontheir property hasn’t always gone smoothlythough and one in five (19%) had damagecaused during the building work, averaging£8k.

The findings are released as Lloyds TsBHome insurance celebrates its 10thAnniversary of being voted Britain’s mostpopular insurer by launching My FavouriteRoom (www.lloydstsbmyfavourietroom.co.uk), a competition giving house-proudBritons the chance to show off theirfavourite room and win £10,000.

Paula Llewellyn, Head of Marketing servicesat Lloyds TsB Home insurance said: “Ratherthan moving, people are adjusting theirown property to create their dream homeand the living space they need and it’s clearto see that open plan living is what modernfamilies want. To celebrate being Britain’smost popular home insurer, we’ve launchedour My Favourite Room competition soBritons can show off their best loved roomin the home they have created and we areseeing lots of entries showing open planliving.”

Breaking down the wallsOpen plan living – once the preserve of the urban trendsetter – isnow being replicated across the land as today’s householders shunthe 20th century traditions of designated dining rooms, hallways andkitchens, says Simon Hamilton, international director at the BIID

Kitchen worktops specialist, granite Transformations, has celebratedOlympic year by creating a Union Jack-adorned island unit, clad inits tough, hardwearing, diamond-polished material. it then invitedBritain’s top gymnast, Beth Tweddle, to show off its patriotic pieceby performing a series of rhythmic routines on and around the unit.As a test of the material’s strength and resilience, Beth’s energeticvaulting, tumbling, jumps and acrobatics put it through its paces, although granite Transformations would expect far more severetreatment in normal household and commercial use.

Made from post-consumer recycled wine, beer and mineral waterbottles, with an element of polymer resin for strength and apatented Flexiweb™ backing for flexibility, it outperforms mostother finishing materials like natural or engineered stone and solidsynthetics. But what made this whole exercise possible, is thedistinctive slimline profile and exceptionally light weight of graniteTransformations’ surfaces.
