Trainer Mark Casse has been knocking off career milestones left and right over the last 12 months,

earning his first Breeders' Cup victories last October, conditioning his first Eclipse Award winner in cham-pion turf female Tepin, and even crossing the ocean with that one to prevail at Royal Ascot.

On Sept. 3, in the most dramatic way one could script, the Canadian Hall of Fame conditioner threw another albatross to the wolves when John Oxley's Pretty City Dancer dead-heated for the win in the $350,000 Spinaway Stakes (gr. I), giving her trainer a grade I win at Saratoga Race Course for the first time.

That's the thing with momentum—it usually goes on for some time before its velocity peters out.

With another 800-pound gorilla off his back, Casse will try and test that theory further before the 2016 Saratoga meet comes to a close when he saddles another Oxley runner in Classic Empire in Monday's $350,000 Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) over seven furlongs.

KY-BRED RED VERDON AIMED FOR ST. LEGER Trainer Ed Dunlop is hoping the extended 1 3/4 miles of the Ladbrokes St Leger (Eng-I) will play to the strengths of Red Verdon Sept. 10 at Doncaster in the world's oldest classic, for which Idaho is the early favorite.

oval hasn't been kind to his stable over the years. Heading into the Sept. 3 card, he was 4-for-97 in his career over the Saratoga main track, with the 2015 Saranac Stakes (gr. IIIT) his only prior graded stakes win there.

After watching Pretty City Dancer get a share of Spinaway spoils despite running extremely green in the stretch, Casse had added confidence that Classic Empire's buzz-worthy efforts at Churchill Downs this summer have every chance at translat-ing on the Spa's closing day.

"This one makes us feel good and it makes me feel good about the Hopeful," Casse said after the Spinaway. "We went for a long time where we real-ly hardly ran anything at Saratoga. It's always nice to win a grade I wherever you're at, but to win one at Saratoga (is) a touch sweeter."

Classic Empire and Pretty City Dancer have al-ready combined forces once before to get Casse's heart pumping, with the former winning the July 2 $100,000 Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) at Churchill one race before his stablemate took the $100,000 Debutante Stakes on the same card.

It was Classic Empire who generated the most chatter about big-race potential that night; the son Pioneerof the Nile broke poorly out of post 1, was about 12 lengths out of the early running, and looked beaten in midstretch only to unleash a late turn of foot to nail Recruiting Ready by three-quar-ters of a length at the wire. The bay colt didn't get away well going 4 1/2 furlongs in his career debut on May 4 at Churchill either, but won that day any-way by 1 1/2 lengths.

"I thought it was one of the more impressive 2-year-old winners I've ever had, given the adver-sity he had to overcome," Casse said of the Bash-ford Manor. "What was amazing was not just what he overcame, but how fast he ran (six furlongs in 1:09.39). I was like 'Are you kidding me?'

"This horse, even in his first start had a lot of difficulty that he was able to overcome. (The Hopeful) is a tall task, but I expect him to run really well." BH

LUCY N ETHEL UNBEATEN WITH PRIORESS WINBy Myra Lewyn

Lucy N Ethel, making her first start since January, kept her unbeaten record intact Sept. 4 after

leading at every point of call in the $300,000 Prioress Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-old filly sprinters at Saratoga Race Course.

A homebred of J A G Racing and Jettany Thorough-bred Corp., Lucy N Ethel defeated Dearest, who chased her throughout and made a race of it in the stretch but finished second, three-quarters of a length back.

Lucy N Ethel, who has four wins from as many starts, finished six furlongs in 1:09.33 on a fast track while racing for the first time in more than eight months. Her record includes a last-out win in her stakes debut in the Old Hat Stakes (gr. III) Jan. 2 at Gulfstream Park, an allowance victory at Parx Racing in December, and a maiden score in her debut there in November for previous trainer Ramon Perciado.

Vying with Coniah at the start, Lucy N Ethel assert-ed herself for Jose Lezcano and set swift fractions of :22.05 for the opening quarter and :44.96 for the half, with Dearest in pursuit. Dearest looked to get a head in front heading into the stretch but Lucy N Ethel would not be denied and gamely fought back to get the victory.

"We won a grade III down in Gulfstream, and we tried to find a race for her but we really couldn't find

a race for her," said Steve Perry of J A G Racing. "We knew she was training brilliantly against some very nice horses, so we really thought we had a shot at this. It's one of the last 3-year-old races that there are in the country for fillies, so it was our plan all along. We had just hoped we had a race to enter her in before this.

"She's good enough for this, obviously. We were pretty confident but it's hard, this was a lovely group of horses. These are some of the best in the world as far as sprinters go."

Lezcano said Bradley told hime to take Lucy N Ethel away from the pony and warm her good, and then let her break and go to the lead.

"Everything went as planned," he said. "She broke well and I got a good position in front and she did it easy. I felt I had enough horse in the stretch. She came in prepared for this race today."

Pennsylvania-bred Lucy N Ethel, trained by Chloe Bradley, is a daughter of West Virginia-based sire During out of the winning Silver Ghost mare Kid Silver, who also produced a full brother in stakes win-ner Jake N Elwood and a half sister in Hey Kiddo.

Lucy N Ethel, off at 22-1 odds, paid $47.40, $18,60, and $8.70, Dearest returned $7 and $5.50, and Takrees paid $7.60 to show.

Off the Tracks, the 2-1 favorite was fourth after a mild rally, and was followed by Kareena, Coniah, One True Kiss, Lost Raven, Coppa, and Appealing Maggie to complete the order of finish. BH

FREE ROSE TOUGH IN DEL MAR DERBYBy Myra Lewyn

Abbondanza Racing and Nathan McCauley's Free Rose roared to the lead on the far turn and held

on for a narrow win the $250,000 Del Mar Derby (gr. IIT) Sept. 4 as the field threatened to engulf him.

The Munnings gelding, rating in second early before kicking strongly to the front, opened a three-length advantage into the stretch and was all out to win by about a half length from Ralis, with Dressed in Hermes just a nose back third and Monster Bea another nose away in fourth.

Free Rose, at 11-1 odds, completed 1 1/8 miles on firm turf in 1:47.70 under Norberto Arroyo Jr. to earn his second successive graded win for trainer Richard Baltas. He scored in the La Jolla Handicap (gr. IIIT) at almost 30-1 odds Aug. 6 at Del Mar and improved to four wins from 11 career starts.

Free Rose paid $25.80, $12.80, and $8.60 and 2015 Hopeful (gr. I)) winner Ralis returned $6.80 and $5.60. Dressed in Hermes paid $8.20 to show.

Mr. Roary spurted from the gate to lead early and set fractions of :22.37 and :45.92 while opening a 2 1/2-length advantage from Free Rose on the back-stretch. With Arroyo sit-ting chilly as six furlongs went in 1:10.65, Free Rose was ready to roll when asked and blazed forward from the outside to take control. He game-ly held on to triumph.

"Richie (Baltas) said to get him out of there and see what's happening," Arroyo said. " 'If you can make the lead, make the lead. If someone wants to go, then lay second.' It worked just that way. He's a free-running horse and you can't fight him. I heard them coming up behind me and I cut him loose. I thought maybe I went for it too early, but

if I'd waited another second or two, they would've had the jump on me. It worked out just right."

Ralis far back early, went six wide into the lane and closed to get second.

"I had to go wide all the way with him," jockey Mario Gutierrez said."Didn't have any choice. He ran great, though. He went real well."

Baltas said Free Rose was game in his longshot La Jolla win.

"A lot of people discounted it because speed was good that day, but he ran some pretty fast fractions and he didn't give up when they came at him," he said. "He ran back quicker last time than he did this time. We were going to run in the (opening day) Oceanside Stakes but he didn't get in because he had run for a tag a little while before. I told Norberto that (Mr. Roary) was going to go for the lead, so he just sat second and then made a helluva move around the turn. He just kind of said 'I'll see you guys later.' I was hoping he wasn't going to get caught, and he didn't."

McCauley bred Free Rose in Kentucky from the winning El Prado mare Birdie Birdie and second dam Dominique's Show is a half sister to European cham-pion 2-yaer-old One Cool Cat. BH

THREE PROMISING COLTS TOP DEL MAR FUTURITYBy Blood-Horse Staff

The 77th summer season of Thoroughbred racing at Del Mar comes to an end Sept. 5 with a vintage

renewal of the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity (gr. I).The seven-furlong contest for 2-year-olds has

been pivotal in the development of future stars, in-cluding the last three winners of the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I)—Eclipse Award champions California Chrome, American Pharoah, and Nyquist.

This year, three potential stars head the field in Monday's 69th Futurity.

Chasing Aces, a son of Flatter, bettered Soldier Girl's 52-year-old Del Mar record for five furlongs when he blistered the distance in 56.21 seconds in breaking his maiden in a July 17 maiden special weight.

Trainer Keith Desormeaux sends out the Dominus colt Straight Fire, runner-up to Chasing Aces in his first start, who returned brilliantly Aug. 6 to win by 10 1/2 lengths in 1:14.94 for 6 1/2 furlongs.

Bob Baffert-trained Klimt (Quality Road) won the Futurity steppingstone Best Pal Stakes (gr. II) Aug. 13 in game fashion and will carry the high weight of 123 pounds.

Tyler Baze returns aboard Chasing Aces trained by Peter Miller, Kent Desormeaux again has the call from brother Keith Desormeaux on Straight Fire, and Rafael Bejarano will pilot Klimt.

Completing the line-up are stylish debut winner Midnight Pleasure, and maidens Vegas Itch and Dy-namic Ruler. BH

AVENGE HOLDS OFF FINEST CITY IN JOHN C. MABEEBy Myra Lewyn

Just behind a slow pace, Ramona Bass' Avenge struck the lead coming off the turn and bested

Finest City in a close finish in the $200,000 John C. Mabee Stakes (gr. IIT) for fillies and mares Sept. 4 at Del Mar.

A 4-year-old daughter of Claiborne Farm sire War Front ridden by Flavien Prat, Avenge covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.82 on firm turf to post her first graded stakes win at odds of 7-1. Elektrum, last year's Mabee winner, was third. Previously unbeat-en Sobradora Inc was unplaced.

Tracking pacesetter Gloryzapper from second, with pedestrian fractions of :23.26, :48.28 and 1:13.19 through six furlongs, Avenge drew even on the turn while Finest City made her move for Kent Desormeaux. The winner opened a clear lead from that rival into the stretch and was fully extended to prevail.

Avenge paid $17.60, $10.60, and $7.60, Finest city brought $12.80 and $8.60, and Elektrum paid $4.60.

Bred in Kentucky by the Lerici Syndicate, Avenge is a half sister to graded stakes-placed winner Lira (Giant's Causeway) from the winning Woodman mare Lerici. Winner of half of her 10 career starts for trainer Richard Mandella, including the 2015 Ultrafleet Stakes at Santa Anita Park, the filly was a $650,000 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga select yearling sale purchase by Steve Young. SHAMAN GHOST IN GOOD ORDER AFTER WOODWARD WINBy Blood-Horse Staff

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens reported that Shaman Ghost was in good shape the morning after his head vic-

tory over Mubtaahij and Frosted in the Sept. 3 Wood-ward (gr. I) at Saratoga Race Course.

"He's fine. He walked good this morning," said Jerkens.

Breaking the seven-figure mark in earnings, Shaman Ghost picked up his first grade I win and sixth career victory, which includes his 2015 Queen's Plate triumph at Woodbine, and lifetime earnings of $1,292,811. Although the 4-year-old Ghostzapper colt has raced on the dirt at distances ranging from seven furlongs to 1 1/2 miles, the Woodward was his first attempt at 1 1/8 miles—an attempt that even impressed his veteran trainer.

"It was good to see him throw in a good mile and an eighth yesterday, because it is different from the other big races that he's won," said Jerkens. "Yester-day, at the far turn, the pace started to quicken and he had to be right there with them to do it. Javier (Castellano) got after him and he responded, so it was really good to see that instead of staying in that same lope all the way. He's always been game. If you look at his form, even last year, he's relentless. He showed us a lot yesterday, that's for sure."

Jerkens added that Shaman Ghost could be possi-ble to make his next start in the $1 million Jockey Club Gold Cup Invitational (gr. I) at Belmont Park Oct. 8, a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" qualifier for the

Breeders' Cup Classic (gr. I) Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park."(It's) not definite, but (we) would have to consid-

er it for sure," he said of the Gold Cup. "It's the next logical step; the big purse that it is, plus the mile and a quarter. Distance isn't a problem for him so long as he gets in a nice rhythm the whole way."

Stablemates Mubtaahij and Frosted also came out of their respective second and third placings in the Woodward in good order, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Sunday morning.

McLaughlin noted that he was far from discour-aged by Frosted's effort as the 2-5 favorite, in which the 4-year-old Tapit colt appeared poised to strike in the stretch under a hand ride from Joel Rosario but couldn't get to the wire in time to finish a close third.

"He carried six more pounds than Mubtaahij, four more pounds than the winner, and ran 40 feet fur-ther than the winner," said McLaughlin. "So we feel like he was the best horse, but it's horse racing—he got beat."

"He didn't break sharp and that changed everything," he added. "He doesn't like the whip so that's why he didn't hit him. A lot of people were probably wondering why, but he doesn't like the whip."

Plans for Frosted's next start have yet to be deter-mined, McLaughlin said. The Godolphin Racing color-bearer is already armed with all-fees-paid berths into both the Breeders' Cup Classic and the $1 million Las Vegas Dirt Mile (gr. I) at Santa Anita on November 4-5.

Mubtaahij, meanwhile, will be pointed to the Jock-ey Club Gold Cup next month following his impres-sive runner-up effort. BH

RING WEEKEND, TAKEOVER TARGET VIE IN BARUCHBy Blood-Horse Staff

A field of 10 talented runners, each looking to es-tablish themselves in the older male turf division

heading into the fall, will line up for the final stakes of the 2016 Saratoga Race Course meet in the $250,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. IIT) on the Sept. 5 Clos-ing Day program.

The 57th running of the Bernard Baruch for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/16 miles on the Mellon Turf Course is the second of two stakes on the Labor Day holiday card, following the 112th renewal of the $350,000 Hopeful (gr. I) for 2-year-olds.

Trainer Graham Motion entered St. Elias Stable and West Point Thoroughbreds' Ring Weekend in the Baruch. A 5-year-old son of Tapit, Ring Weekend be-gan his 2016 campaign finishing second by a nose to rival Takeover Target in the Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) May 21 at Pimlico Race Course. In his subsequent start, he was sixth after being pinched back at the break in the Aug. 20 Fourstardave (gr. IT) at Saratoga. Motion is impressed with his runner coming into the race.

"He's been doing really well since he got up here this summer," said Motion. "You can see his develop-ment. Last time he kind of got shuffled back at the start and ended up further back than I would have liked. However, with this his third start of the year, he seems to be coming into form and if he can run back to his Dixie race he should be very compet-itive."

With Hall of Famer John Velazquez aboard, Ring Weekend will leave from post 2 under co-high weight of 118 pounds.

Takeover Target, who followed the Dixie with a fourth-place effort June 18 in the Poker Stakes (gr. IIIT), will look to get back to the winner's circle for trainer Chad Brown and owners William Lawrence

and Klaravich Stables. The 4-year-old Harlan's Holi-day colt is 1-for-2 over the Saratoga turf, winning the Hall of Fame (gr. IIT) and finishing sixth in the Saranac (gr. IIIT) last summer.

Also tacking 118 pounds, Takeover Target will be ridden by Jose Ortiz from post 5.

One of interest is Jay Gatsby, a 4-year-old gray or roan ridgling by Giant's Causeway. Entered by trainer Jimmy Jerkens for Allen Stable Inc., in his most recent race Aug. 20 at Saratoga, he raced four-wide most of the way to just miss at the wire in the Lure Stakes, beaten a nose by Shining Copper at the Baruch dis-tance.

"That was a hard loss in the Lure," said Jerkens. "He actually was ahead of that horse (Shining Cop-per) late in the lane and just lost the bob. It was good to see the horse (Offering Plan) that was behind them come back run a good third in the West Point the oth-er day (Aug. 28). I think he's a legitimate contender and has to improve, but it looks like he's been getting there and moving forward little by little."

Reunited with jockey Javier Castellano, aboard for his last win on June 3 at Belmont in an optional claim-ing allowance, the runner will leave post 8. BH

Tip Tap Tapizar scored by a neck in the Sapling Stakes at Monmouth

Park Sept. 4, for his first stakes victory, becoming sire Tapizar's first black-type winner.

Whispering Oaks Farm's Tip Tap Tapizar won at first asking in a maid-en special weight at Churchill Downs Jun. 11 and went on to finish third in the Bashford Manor Stakes (gr. III) July 2.

In his next race, the Saratoga Spe-cial Stakes (gr. II), he was "clobbered" by Recruiting Ready inside the half-mile pole, accord-ing to Equibase notes. Although he finished third be-hind eventual winner Gunnevera, Recruiting Ready, who finished second, was disqualified to fourth place, and Tip Tap Tapizar was moved to second.

The colt, out of the Storm Cat mare Counterpoise, is trained by Steve Asmussen.

"With his breeding, we expected that he would be able to stretch out," said Asmussen's assistant Toby Sheets. "It looked like he maybe had a bit of traffic down the backside, but coming from a little behind actually worked out best for him. We don't really have anything planned for him next, we'll just enjoy the moment."

Gainesway's Tapizar, by Tapit out of Winning Call

(Deputy Minister), was a multiple graded stakes win-ner and winner of the 2012 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (gr. I) in his last race before retiring to stud. He stood at Gainesway for a 2016 fee of $15,000.

Spendthrift Farm's Dominus was also represented by his first black-type winner when All Right held off Parlor to win the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Stakes by a neck Sept. 3 at Kentucky Downs.

William Helwig and Brent Gasaway's All Right fin-ished second in his first start at Ellis Park Aug. 14. He is out of the Touch Gold mare Smart Touch.

Dominus, a two-time grade II winner, was named 2012 Virginia champion grass horse. A son of Smart Strike, the freshman sire is out of the graded stakes-placed Cuando. He stood 2016 for a fee of $3,500. BH

Grade I winner First Defence and the winning A.P. Indy son United States have been sold and relo-

cated to Saudi Arabia.Juddmonte Farms homebred First Defence, a

12-year-old son of Unbridled's Song, has been sold to Haif Stud. The deal was brokered by Chad Schumer of Schumer Bloodstock and Khalid Alsyari.

The sire of 2014 champion older mare Close Hatches, First Defence entered stud at Juddmonte Farms in Central Kentucky in 2009. He has sired seven other black-type winners, including English group III winner Dundonnell, French group III winner Antonoe, and multiple grade III winner Irish Jasper, who won the Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes.

First Defence is out of grade I winner Honest Lady, a Seattle Slew half sister to grade I winners and suc-cessful sires Empire Maker and Chester House. His granddam, Toussaud, is a grade I winner and a re-nowned matriarch of Juddmonte's operation, having also produced grade I winner Chiselling and grade II winner Decarchy.

Trained by the late Bobby Frankel on behalf of Juddmonte Farms, First Defence won six of 14 starts for $580,534 in earnings. He was a top-class sprinter who won graded stakes on dirt and turf. His best performances included a victory in the 2008 grade III Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park before taking the grade I Forego Handicap by 6 3/4 lengths at Saratoga

IQUITOS GOES LAST TO FIRST IN GP VON BADENBy Myra Lewyn

Stall Mulligan's Iquitos kicked away from last to win the Longines Grosser Preis von Baden (Ger-I),

Germany's top race, soundly defeating the good filly Nightflower amidst a downpour.

Iquitos advanced into contention with more than a quarter mile to run and was urged on to overtake Nightflower inside the final furlong and score by 2 3/4 lengths. Pagella, who also waited in the rear early, was up for third, five lengths back.

Iquitos posted his first group I victory while also providing jockey Ian Ferguson and trainer Hans-Jur-gen Groschel their breakthrough top-level wins.

From the second crop of former German Derby (Ger-I) winner Adlerflug (In the Wings), he won the Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft (Ger-II) in May at Baden-Baden, followed by a second to Melbourne Cup (Aus-I) winner Protectionist in the Grosser Hansa-Preis (Ger-II) at Hamburg and a fourth behind Elliptique in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis-Bayerisches (Ger-I) July 31 at Munich last time out.

Wasir set the pace at a good clip, with Dylan Mouth in pursuit and German Oaks (Ger-I) winner and favorite Serienholde third in a strung-out field. Wasir kept his advantage ear-ly in the stretch but Dy-lan Mouth and Serien-holde were also tiring as Nightflower, toward the back of 10-horse field early, ranged up to grab control from the fading front-runner.

Iquitos came under pressure from Fergu-son in the final eighth and he smartly quick-ened and breezed past Nightflower, who kept on the same pace but

held for second.Final time for 2,400 meters (about 1 1/2 miles) was

2:33.79 on turf rated as good."I always like to train horses to finish well from the

rear, and Iquitos had his ideal conditions today; a re-ally strong pace so that he could be switched off and then show his finishing speed to best advantage," Groschel told Racing Post.

Group I winner Dylan Mouth, who does his best running in Italy, faded to seventh.

With his victory, Iquitos earned an automatic starting berth in the Longines Breeder's Cup Turf (gr. I) Nov. 5 at Santa Anita Park.

The winner was bred in Germany by Dr. Erika Buh-mann from the winning Areion mare Irika.

A berth in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf (gr. IT) was also on the line the previous day in the T. von Zastrow Stutenpreis (Ger-II), won by Darius Rac-ing's Parvaneh, an Irish-bred daughter of Holy Roman Emperor trained by Waldemar Hickst. The 3-year-old filly captured the Schwarzgold-Rennen (Ger-III) in April before finishing unplaced in the German Oaks and One Thousand Guineas (Ger-II). BH

GROWING FORTUNES OF UNION RAGSBy Eric Mitchell

How dramatically the fortunes of a fresh-man sire can change with a single race as

was seen Sept. 3 when Debutante Stakes (gr. I) winner Union Strike became the first black-type winner and first graded stakes winner for her sire Union Rags.

In a minute and 23 seconds, Lane's End's classic-winning son of Dixie Union jumped to the second spot on the North American freshman sire list with $423,454 in progeny earnings. Un-ion Rags and Darby Dan's Dialed In, the leading freshman sire as of Sept. 4, are the only first-crop sires with graded stakes winners so far.

Union Rags, bred and raced by Phyllis Wyeth, was pegged early as a stallion to watch. He had the numbers—106 named foals in his first crop—and had the book quality as the sec-ond-leading, North American-based freshman sire by the Comparable Index (CI) for his first foals.

The CI, similar to the average earnings index, is an indicator of how a good a sire's book of dams are as produc-ers by measuring the success of their prog-eny by other sires. Union Rags ranks second with a 2.14 CI, through Sept. 3, just behind WinStar Farm's Bodemeister who has a 2.19 CI. The top domestic sire is Calumet Farm's Eye of the Leopard, who has a 2.45.

These sires are among four fresh-men who will be represented by year-lings at the upcoming

Keeneland September yearling sale with a first-crop CI above 2.00. The other is Frankel with a stout 3.69.

At auction, Union Rags' juveniles were well-received. He had 28 sold that brought a median of $92,500, the second-highest median among freshman sires represented by three or more sold. Bodemeister was the leader with a median of $100,000 for 31 sold.

So far Union Rags' runners have lived up to the athleticism they displayed. He has five win-ners and 14 placed finishers from 21 starters. The sire AEI has taken a nice jump from 0.71 as of Aug. 9 to 1.24.

Regarding the quality of yearlings being of-fered this year, Union Rags remains among the leaders by book size and quality. He ranks sec-ond by number of 2015 foals and by the 2015 CI, with 116 foals and 2.21 CI. Bodemeister is the leader of the sire class by number of 2015 foals with 140 and his 2015 dams sport a 2.55 CI. Only Frankel has a higher CI for 2015 dams at 4.11.

Union Rags has 69 cataloged to the Keene-land September sale, with 12 entered so far in Book 1, 16 in Book 2, and 24 in Book 3. BH
