NEWCOMER JOOSTE SPICES UP TATTS DAY 3By Carl Evans

A South African who loved a bet but couldn't afford

a horse had an oblique bearing on Tattersalls'

October yearling sale Book 1, which ended Oct. 8 in

Newmarket, England.

Markus Jooste's father's gambling generated

interest in his son, who became hooked after joining

a partnership in National Emblem, a successful race-

horse and sire. Jooste's skills as CEO of furniture giant

Steinhoff led to ownership in hundreds of racehors-

es and the Klawervlei Stud. Buying in the name of

Mayfair Speculators, he joined the list of Tattersalls'

big spenders this week, investing 4,075,000 guineas

($6,523,651).

Though less than half spent by leading buyer,

Coolmore Stud's MV Magnier (8,885,000 guineas;

$14,166,890), it was a notable sum for a fresh face.

Darley's John Ferguson bought 23 horses for

8,400,000 guineas ($13,425,357), 50% less than he

spent last year. Fortunately, Jooste, not to mention

China Horse Club, was there to take up some slack.

Gross of 82,744,500 guineas ($132,929,039) increased

4% and became a European record for any bloodstock

auction. The catalog was bigger; the average price,

smaller by 6% (222,431 guineas; $357,335). BH

Keeneland has joined the Coalition for Horse

Racing Integrity, which is attempting to rally support

for legislation that would put USADA in charge of

equine medication policy, testing, and enforcement.

Keeneland president Bill Thomason noted progress

has been made in recent years, through industry ef-

forts like the National Uniform Medication Program,

but efforts need to be expedited.

"The coalition has really talked about the positive

things that have been accomplished around the

country," Thomason said. "They've put together a

plan to build on those accomplishments and expe-

dite them; make them consistent around the coun-

try."

To date, Keeneland, which also offers world-class

sales, is the most prominent track to join the coa-

lition, though Thomason expects more to come on

board. Thomason said improved racing integrity will

help the entire industry. BH

stallions on the Spendthrift roster so far, and negoti-

ations for other prospects are underway.

"This isn't the end of it; we'll probably have more

to come," said stallion director Mark Toothaker. "Pal-

ace was a huge success and basically sold in one day.

Last year we had 19 stallions and bred 2,636 mares.

It's conceivable for next year we could have 26 or 27

stallions. We've got our stallion manager pulling his

hair out thinking about how busy he and his crew are

going to be come breeding season."

At 82, owner B. Wayne Hughes "is not slowing

down," Toothaker said. "Mr. Hughes loves the stal-

lion business, and he would rather be aggressive.

We're in a unique situation with him where we don't

have to syndicate to buy them; he can just write a

RMTC DEFENDS METHOCARBAMOL GUIDANCEBy Frank Angst

A day after respected trainer Graham Motion ques-

tioned the research conducted to determine the

threshold level and withdrawal time for methocarba-

mol, known as Robaxin, the Racing Medication and

Testing Consortium defended its efforts.

Motion-conditioned Kitten's Point was disqualified

from her April victory in the Bewitch Stakes (gr. IIIT)

at Keeneland following an overage for Robaxin, a

muscle relaxant. It was the trainer's first medication

violation in 23 years.

Motion is appealing the finding that carries a five-

day suspension and $500 fine, in part on the grounds

that proper research wasn't conducted on the with-

drawal times and threshold levels.

Earlier this year Delaware stewards dropped a

case against multiple Eclipse Award-winning trainer

Todd Pletcher after an attorney advised them the

RMTC-recommended rule on the medication in ques-

tion, betamethasone, was not subjected to proper

peer review.

RMTC executive director Dionne Benson said

the research was in place for that medication—she

wishes Delaware had continued the case—and, citing

a published study, believes research is in place for

methocarbamol. BH

PAPIESE: GLASS FULL FOR WORK ALL WEEKBy Tom LaMarra

Richard Papiese, who operates Midwest Thorough-

breds with his wife, Karen, looked on the positive

side of the Oct. 8 retirement of his 2014 champion

Work All Week, who he believes sustained a stress

fracture in his knee during Keeneland's Oct. 2 Phoe-

nix Stakes (gr. III).

"We are so lucky we decided to check because

(the injury) could have set him up for a slab fracture,

and that could have been catastrophic," Papiese said.

"It's not a tragedy and the glass isn't half-empty—it's

full because he isn't shattered."

Illinois-homebred Work All Week took last year's

Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) and was being pointed for

this year's. The gelding won 13 of 19 starts for earn-

ings of more than $1.5 million. Big on aftercare, the

Papieses recently had Work All Week and his trainer,

Roger Brueggemann, pose for photos promoting the

"One Last Race" retirement program.

"Work All Week is part of the family," Papiese

said. "We're going to make sure he stays happy and

A horse owner only since 2010, much of Kosta

Hronis' impressive success can be attributed to

his first private purchase.

In 2011 Hronis secured Lady of Shamrock

through bloodstock agent David Ingordo. The

daughter of Scat Daddy went on to win two grade I

events in 2012 and four graded races overall.

"We've been spoiled from the start," Hronis said.

"Lady of Shamrock built a lot of the stable herself."

With early success like that, Hronis hasn't been

shy to pull the trigger on private purchases, often

through Ingordo. This year has been a sparkling ex-

ample, with Stellar Wind and Hard Aces moving to

Hronis Racing and trainer John Sadler and winning

grade Is in 2015. Stellar Wind is likely headed to the

Oct. 30 Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I).

"If you're around animals enough, the good ones

have a look to them," Ingordo said. "You can notice—

this one breathes a little different air. You want to get

as many of those as you can." BH

The sidelining of star 3-year-old colts Vancouver

(Medaglia d'Oro) and Pride Of Dubai (Street Cry) at

the start of spring has opened the gate for new talent

to emerge, and Exosphere (Lonhro) and Press State-

ment (Hinchinbrook) have risen to the challenge.

Winner of the group I Golden Rose, Exosphere

was one of five stakes winners for Godolphin Oct. 3

at Randwick with a victory in the 1,200-meter Ro-

man Consul Stakes (Aus-II). He ran faster time than

the older sprinters and was in a class of his own.

Exosphere heads next to Melbourne for the group I

Coolmore Stud Stakes (1,200 meters) Oct. 31.

A dominant last-start winner in Sydney, the Chris

Waller-trained Press Statement will start a hot favorite

in the $1 million Caulfield Guineas (Aus-I) at 1,600 me-

ters in Melbourne Oct. 10, despite drawing wide.

Meanwhile, an eye-catching winner in restricted

grade last week in Sydney was unbeaten colt Hellbent

(I Am Invincible), who looks to step into stakes com-

A FEW QUESTIONS WITH CONOR FOLEYBy Ian Tapp

Today's MarketWatch interview is with blood-

stock agent Conor Foley, who operates Ora-

cle Bloodstock in Lexington.

Blood-Horse Daily: Now that the dust has

settled after Keeneland September, what are

your impressions of the market?

Conor Foley: What stood out to me was that

the top and the middle of the market are very

solid. I felt Books 1-4 were very strong. It's hard

to get a feel from year to year because the sale's

format changes, but the one takeaway is that

things have settled and the market is solid. Now

you're really seeing the effect of the retraction

from the economic decline in 2008, because

over those few years the bottom of the mar-

ket—in terms of quality of mares—got washed

away. That has helped the overall market come

back to a commodity-based business.

My biggest worry today is the economic

health of the mid- to low-level tracks. It's im-

portant that they keep marching right along

because it's hard for people to keep investing

in the top level of the market if the horses that

prove to be not to the standard of their stable

can't find their ways to make a living for some-

one else. You need that liquidity in the market.

BHD: One of your areas of expertise is

buying horses privately. What is the current

trend in that part of the market?

CF: Right now I have several people who want

to buy 2-year-olds privately, but people just

don't want to sell a racehorse. But that is good

because it's a sign of the strong economy and

health in the market when, across the board,

people want to hold on to very high-risk assets.

Obviously they do so for several reasons; emo-

tions are definitely tied to them. So I understand

anyone who doesn’t want to sell a nice 2-year-

old.

BHD: What are the main considerations or

strategies for someone who wants to buy a

2-year-old this time of year?

CF: You have to be careful because horses

can run career-best performances. You want to

see horses that you feel can replicate outstand-

ing performances or a horse you feel will excel

under different conditions. But over the next two

months there's usually a lot of activity. It's funny;

people shift their focus with the seasons, and

different events throughout the year fuel trade.

For example, someone's usually not going to try

to buy a broodmare in June, but they would this

time of year. But, really, what's the difference

in holding the mare for three months? After the

Breeders' Cup, people get excited about the Der-

by and want to find a nice 2-year-old.

Some 2-year-olds right now you could buy for

$500,000, others for $1 million. It's just a matter

of where (the buyer) wants to get involved. To

spend a substantial amount of money, you have

to make a bet in terms of "Can this horse get a

distance of ground?" And, really, all of them have

question marks. Also, remember that you're

purchasing a passing grade on the rate of attri-

tion that occurs in young horses. It's going to cost

more money, but ultimately it could be a safer

investment because you've eliminated so many

unknowns. BH
