IRONICUS SIDELINED, WILL MISS BCBy Claire Novak
Ironicus, record-setting winner of the Sept. 7
Bernard Baruch Handicap (gr. IIT), is at Rood &
Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington to repair
a minor fracture in the right front cannon bone,
trainer Shug McGaughey said Sept. 24. The colt's
injury will force him to miss the Breeders' Cup
Mile (gr. IT).
"I didn't like the way he walked there a couple
of days—he had been training until last Sunday—
and I'm glad we found it," McGaughey said. "With
that type of injury, it's very minor, not displaced."
After taking the Longines Dixie (gr. IIT) earlier
in the season, Ironicus won the 1 1/16-mile Ber-
nard Baruch Sept. 7 in 1:38.54, his second grade II
victory. McGaughey said Stuart Janney III's home-
bred 4-year-old son of Distorted Humor should
return to training for a campaign next year.
"It's a one-screw type of deal, and I'm sure it'll
be about 60 days to heal up and we'll start going
again from there," McGaughey said. BH

EMBELLISH THE LACE INJURED, SALE-BOUNDBy Lenny Shulman
Grade I winner Embellish the Lace has been
retired with a chip injury and will be offered
for sale at the Fasig-Tipton November mixed
sale, according to owner Alex Lieblong. The
injury was discovered following her fifth-place
finish in the Sept. 19 Cotillion Stakes (gr. I) at
Parx Racing.
Winner of Saratoga's Alabama Stakes (gr. I)
Aug. 22, Embellish the Lace (Super Saver—Ex-
panse) finished her career with three wins from
six starts and earnings of $441,540.
"She has a chip and there might be a ten-
don involved," Lieblong said Sept. 24. "I would
rather be going to the Breeders' Cup with her
because she's a gorgeous filly and she did it so
effortlessly. At least she's not in any pain, so
we'll let the market decide whether she moves
on or becomes a broodmare for me."
Embellish the Lace, a half sister to 2010
Travers Stakes (gr. I) winner Afleet Express (by
Afleet Alex), is from the family of 2015 Florida
Derby (gr. I) winner Materiality. BH

The session sold 283 yearlings for $6,513,000,
down 1.7% from last year's aggregate for 289 year-

SIMS SEARCHING FOR THE NEXT 'SOPHIA'By Ron Mitchell
Working the back walking ring at the
Keeneland September yearling
sale, trainer Phil Sims was in search
of the next Don't Tell Sophia, the $1.3
million earner he had bought for $1,000
at the 2009 sale.
"I'm always looking to catch lightning
in a bottle," Sims said Sept. 24. He noted
that 7-year-old Don't Tell Sophia, in
foal to Medaglia d'Oro, is entered in the
Keeneland November sale.
Sims said he looks at every yearling
that goes through the ring, trying to find future racing
prospects produced from good, young mares. He
doesn't order veterinary work on possible purchases;
he can spot anything obvious and is willing to take his
time for any other issues to work themselves out.
"There are things I can live with that pinhookers
can't," Sims said. "I'm not in a big hurry to get them
into the entry box." But even with his keen eye and
horsemanship skills, Sims acknowledges finding
Don't Tell Sophia "was a lot of luck." BH
NEW YORK SEEKS TO LIMIT NSAID USEBy Teresa Genaro
It's not official yet, but the New York State Racing
Commission has approved a rule amendment that
would greatly restrict use of non-steroidal anti-in-
flammatory drugs in the week before a horse races.
NSAIDs, which have an analgesic effect, are al-
ready greatly limited for use no more than 24 or
48 hours before a race, but the NYSRC amendment
would allow use of only one such drug in the week
leading up to a race and no closer than 48 hours to
race time.
Members of the commission expressed concern
Sept. 24 that multiple NSAIDs administered outside
the current 48-hour permissible range can confound
testing results and result in concentrations that could
suggest the medications have been administered
within 48 hours. The proposal also stems from the
concern that multiple NSAIDs administered outside
the 48-hour range can interfere with the ability to de-
tect prohibited doses given within 48 hours of racing,
and in turn possibly put horses and riders at risk on
race day. BH

CASINO DRIVE ON A ROLL IN JAPANBy Naohiro Goda
Prestigio, a 2-year-old colt by Japanese fresh-
man sire Casino Drive, won a Sept. 20 maiden
for first-time starters over 1,200 meters on dirt at
Hanshi, his sire's third JRA winner.
Originally campaigned in Japan, Casino Drive,
a Mineshaft half brother to Belmont Stakes (gr.
I) winners Rags to Riches and Jazil, became the
first U.S. dirt graded stakes winner by a Japa-
nese-trained horse with his 2008 Peter Pan Stakes
(gr. II) victory.
In addition to his three JRA winners, Casino
Drive has six NAR winners, including Straight Up,
winner of the Breeders' Gold Junior Cup. As of
Sept. 22 Casino Drive leads all other Japanese
freshman sires with earnings of ¥68,097,000
($567,475).
While most of Casino Drive's 2-year-olds prefer
dirt, Koei Temma has won two turf races includ-
ing the Phoenix Sho over 1,200 meters at Kokura.
Standing at Shadai Stallion Station, Casino Drive
covered 73 mares for a ¥500,000 ($4,166) fee in
2015. BH

GUEST ANALYSIS
GOING THE DISTANCEBy Byron Rogers
Myostatin, a protein produced by muscle cells
to inhibit muscle growth and create differenti-
ation, is encoded by the MSTN gene. In the Thor-
oughbred this gene is widely known as the "speed
gene," with changes in genetic code in and near
MSTN associated with optimal race distances.
A recent paper by Petersen, et al., found a
strong link between variations in MSTN and muscle
fiber type; that is, variations within myostatin influ-
ence the makeup of the muscle fiber type in terms
of the ratio of Type I (distance) and Type II (sprint-
ing) in the muscle.
Despite the more commonly known C:C, C:T,
and T:T variation, it is now apparent that the likely
causative mutation of this muscle fiber-type differ-
entiation is not the C:T variation, rather a SINE in-
sertion, which is a sequence of genetic code either
absent, found in a single copy, or found in a double
copy in Thoroughbreds. Horses that lack the SINE
insertion completely are generally distance horses;
those with a single copy are milers and those with
both, sprinters.
But as with anything else in genetics, it is not
that straightforward. Horses such as Gilded Time
and Henny Hughes, double copy for the SINE inser-
tion, are sprinters, but so is Smarty Jones. Breed-
ers' Cup Sprint winner Cajun Beat is a single copy
SINE insertion horse, so, based on his genotype,
he should be a miler, but so is dual Breeders' Cup
Classic winner Tiznow. Equally, speed doesn't equal
class, and hundreds of thousands of horses are
born each year with the same genotype as some
of the horses mentioned above—but with little of
their class.
The selection for the SINE insertion and the as-
sociated myostatin variation does, however, affect
what populations of horses can do. In a study com-
pleted on 1,246 yearlings from eight commercial
yearling sales—Fasig-Tipton Saratoga, Keeneland
September, Goffs Orby, Tattersalls October, Magic
Millions, Inglis Easter, Inglis Melbourne, and NZB
Karaka—considerable MSTN variation existed.
In Australia, for example, the genotype associ-
ated with sprinting and more Type II muscle fiber
represented about 58% of all yearlings genotyped,
while the genotype associated with Type I muscle
and long-distance racing represented only 3%. The
commercial North American yearling population
also showed considerable selection bias toward
sprinting; the speed genotype represented 53% of
the population and the distance genotype 5%.
While this is a commercial population and ratios
across the entire population would differ, this
selection toward the "sprint" genotype and away
from the "distance" genotype may speak to the
lack of progression of speed in final race times for
the major classic races in North America in which
horses that have genotypes associated with a high-
er proportion of sprinting Type II muscle fiber are
asked to compete at distances where horses more
prevalent in Type I muscle fiber would be more
suitable.
Various explanations can be made for this, one
being that many leading Thoroughbred trainers
come from Quarter Horse backgrounds. However,
more noteworthy is that much of the commercial
North American yearling market is underpinned by
2-year-old pinhookers. In order to be effective as
early 2-year-olds, and over the short distance they
are required to breeze, this buying bench seem-
ingly selects for the SINE insertion and, thus, those
horses with greater muscle mass. BH
Smarty Jones, the 3-year-old champion male of 2004, is genetically a sprinter
