JACOB WEST ENJOYS ECLIPSE THOROUGHBRED PARTNERS ROLE

One of the stereotypes of the Thoroughbred industry is that entry often comes with a silver

spoon in one's mouth. For Jacob West it came with a baseball bat in his hands. As an assistant baseball coach a few years ago—having graduated from the University of Kentucky—West decided to switch hit into the sport of racing and has quickly climbed the batting order.

Stuck in a lousy job in a lousy economy, West was assisting head baseball coach Herb Hammond at a Lexington high school. Hammond suggested West follow his passion, and it has led to sale rings and winner's circles form coast to coast.

West, 31, now finds himself heading into Keeneland's September yearling sale as the vice president of bloodstock for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners. Having learned the game from the ground up at Taylor Made Farm and serving for 1 1/2 years as director of bloodstock services for Three Chimneys Farm, West took his new post July 1. Hired by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners president Aron Wellman, West has been running the bases for Eclipse and the handful of his clients he's retained. His task: find talented product.

"Working the sales is a bit of a traveling circus, and you tend to see the same people at the same spots on an annual basis," said Wellman. "Jacob was a guy who seemed to be landing on an oddly-high number of horses that Eclipse was landing on as far as short-listing and starting the bidding process on. To find an individual who had so many similarities in his tastes of horses was good as Eclipse was looking for a key player of the team."

"The best thing about working with Aron is—when this whole plan came together and we

mapped out what it would look like and I told him about some existing clients I had—he said, 'As long as we are in communication, there is going to be no problem. As long as your main focus is with me, it's good,' " West said.

West's clients include Robert and Lawana Low and Brad Grady.

"It'll be no different than any other sale. I'll be shopping the barns, looking for athletes," West said. "We have a pretty broad budget with Eclipse. Aron basically wants to find value, and that value could be a Tapit yearling for $1.2 million or it could be a $50,000 horse. We look for athletic horses that can wear the Eclipse silks."

If West finds opportunity, Wellman has told him to jump on it.

"With the marketplace today, if you're not looking at all segments, you're missing the boat on a lot of different opportunities," West said. "Whether you are trying to make money or enhance your broodmare band, racing stable, or find stallion prospects, you better be everywhere. And you better be thinking outside the box, too. A lot of people are doing that already."

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, which partnered with Cot Campbell's pioneering Dogwood Stable in 2012, has already filled a trophy case with success in its brief existence. This year the partnership group joined forces with John Malone's Bridlewood Farm and Robert LaPenta to win the classic Belmont Stakes presented by NYRABets (G1) with Tapwrit.

It's those type of two-turn Saturday horses West has been hired to procure.

"In our line of work the real money is in two turns," West said. "You can have all of the sprinters you'd like, but if you want to hit the home run—sell stallion prospects or big-time mare prospects—then have a two-turn horse show up in a major grade 1 race. When an owner can cash it in. ... everybody has to sell at some point unless you are Sheikh Mohammed. ... if you are the everyday player, you have to be able to cash in. Where you hit the lottery ticket is with the two-turn horses. Don't get me wrong; I'd love to own a Drefong or a Mind Your Biscuits, or say I bought those horses, but there is more 'oomph' if you own the Classic Empires of the world, and Always Dreamings and the Tapwrits."

West met Wellman when West was learning the ropes at Taylor Made. West's best friends in the industry include Jonathan Thomas, who heads the training team on the farm at Bridlewood Farm near Ocala, Fla., and Mike McCarthy, a trainer in Southern California. Both young horsemen are protégés of trainer Todd Pletcher. The four got along well together, and it wasn't long before Wellman approached West to see what it would look like if he joined Eclipse.

"It was a situation where it started off as a professional

acquaintance and evolved into a friendship, and we did some business together," said Wellman.

"He's had dreams and ideas of how to grow the partnership, and he needed someone to come in and help him do it," West said. "Whether helping him at the sale or helping bring in new clients."

The lure to leave his post at Three Chimneys was appealing.

"Aron is nothing but class, and his business partner, Brian Spearman, is nothing but class," West said. "They're like a family, and they have accepted me. From Bill Victor, the CFO, to Jack Sadler, who handles a lot of client relationships. ... and it's really (vice president, partner relations) Kelsey Marshall who keeps everybody in line.

"We haven't stopped. The day after I was hired Aron started floating me materials."

Eclipse purchased three yearlings for $222,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July sale, then partnered with Mike Repole on a $900,000 colt by Medaglia d'Oro and with Marty Schwartz on a Tapit filly that sold for $650,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga yearling sale.

"We've worked two sales together where we did an incredible job of bargain shopping and then went to the other extreme to Saratoga where we honed in on trying to buy the best colt and best filly in the sale," said Wellman. "We paid a pretty penny for both, but I think it was a smooth transition for Jacob with our scouting team and myself, Kelsey Marshall, and Brian Spearman. It was organic. There wasn't anything forced."

FROM THE FEATURE WELL

Agents can have all of the "people skills" in the world, but if they can't find the right horse, they eventually end up in another line of work. For West, his "eye" for a horse came with the right training.

"All of my horsemanship and schooling have come from what Mark Taylor taught me," West said. "He honed into my brain that you have to develop your own eye. The greatest thing about working at Taylor Made was that every November they sold all of these grade 1-winning fillies. Obviously, they also raised a lot of horses that went on to be grade 1 winners. I would stare at these horses and watch them walk and I would try to figure out what the commonalities were—their necks, their hips, balance, walk. ... what is it about them that made them so good?

"Finally, after figuring out what Mark was telling me, it just hit me. All good horses do X, Y, and Z. That's the approach I've taken when I have to go find horses. Does this horse look like what all the stallions look like in Central Kentucky? Does this horse have 'it.' "

Additional lessons came from agent Tom McGreevy.

"He buys a percentage of what the other agents buy, and his graded stakes-winning percentage is through the roof," West said. "He buys freaks. I look up to him a lot."

West grew up Paducah, Ky., and upon graduation from college in 2008 went to work at a local bank in Lexington, right as the Great Recession hit.

"I hated it; I was miserable," West said.West was also assisting Hammond with the high

school team. Hammond was more than a coach; he was West's mentor.

"Coach Hammond pulled me aside one day and said, 'You're miserable. You hate your job. You're 24. You've got to find what you love,' " West said. "He knew I loved horse racing, and he told me to

go work on a horse farm, but I didn't want to do that. He told me I might enjoy it and told me about Taylor Made."

West soon joined Taylor Made as a groom, making minimum wage. Beyond the money, he soaked in as much as he could.

"They are such good teachers," West said of the Taylor boys: Duncan, Ben, Frank, and Mark.

At Taylor Made, West worked his way through the ranks, eventually becoming part of the bloodstock team. Another outside influence, Repole, helped propel his career further.

"Mike Repole kind of gave me first shot of selling a big horse," West said of his opportunity to add grade 1 winner Stopchargingmaria and grade 2 winner Unlimited Budget to Taylor Made Sales Ageny's consignments. "Mike gave me a chance, and we never looked back. I try to be like Mike and work harder than anybody else; make smart decisions, and once you make one, don't look back. That's what you have to do in this business. You are spending other people's money, which scares me in the first place, but you have to stand up and be sure in yourself. That's what I got from Mike."

Those qualities are what Doug Cauthen saw as well, and he recruited West to work at Three Chimneys.

"Jacob is a super people person who gets along with everyone and doesn't know a stranger. He has a very good sense of the market value of a horse and shows a lot of confidence when he's talking about a horse that he likes or thinks is a good buy. I think he is going to really enjoy his job at Eclipse—it seems like a perfect fit."

West has come a long way in a short timespan."He has confidence in all things that he does,"

Wellman said. "That is a big attribute to have to be successful in the racing partnership business. For such a young guy he's an incredibly polished individual."

RAIN FORCES SCHEDULE CHANGES AT KENTUCKY DOWNS, ELLISBy BloodHorse Staff

Because of heavy rain, Kentucky Downs has resched-uled the Sept. 2 opening card to Sept. 6. The fields

for the 10-race all-grass card will remain the same.“The ongoing impact of Hurricane Harvey makes

it impossible to run Saturday,” said Kentucky Downs’ senior vice president and general manager Ted Nicholson. “We got six inches (of rain) in 12 hours. It is in the best interest of the horses, jockeys and our guests to move the entire card to Wednesday.”

Kentucky Downs’ five-date meet now will be conducted Sept. 6-7, Sept. 9-10, and Sept. 14. First post is 1:25 p.m. CT each day.

Meanwhile, Ellis Park canceled after its first race Sept. 1 because of flooding on the racetrack. Racing secretary Dan Bork said the cancelation came out of precaution for the safety of riders and horses.

There is no live racing at Ellis Sept. 2, which was planned to accommodate the now-postponed first day of Kentucky Downs. Ellis resumes racing Sept. 3, and closes its live meet on Labor Day, Sept. 4.

Kentucky Downs could not reschedule for Sunday or Monday because those are the final two days of live racing at Ellis. Scratch time for Wednesday’s racing will be 9 a.m. CT Tuesday.

The Wednesday Kentucky Downs card features four stakes races: the $400,000 Tourist Mile, $350,000 Fasig-Tipton Turf Showcase Juvenile; $350,000 Exacta Systems Juvenile Fillies, and $150,000 One Dreamer. BH

TRAINER SALLY LUNDY PASSES AT AGE 63By BloodHorse Staff

Longtime horsewoman, Sarah "Sally" Ann Lundy, the first

woman to saddle a starter in the Belmont Stakes (G1), passed away Aug. 26 after a long battle with cancer. She turned 63 years old the day she died.

Lundy grew up in the Pennsylvania-Delaware region and took to galloping horses and riding steeplechase races in her late teens. She worked for William Burling "Burley" Cocks and Bruce Miller in her early riding years. Later on she took a job with David Whiteley and galloped one of the stable's top runners, 1979 Wood Memorial Stakes (G1) winner Instrument Landing.

She traveled to Southern California with Whiteley's operation, went to work for Willard Proctor upon Whiteley's return to the East Coast, and became a great part of the Proctor barn as an exercise rider. Upon completion of her stay with the Proctor barn, she married trainer Richard J. Lundy and they began training privately for Virginia Kraft Payson.

During her time with Richard Lundy, she was also instrumental in campaigning a long list of stakes horses including grade 1 winners Blushing John, Jade Hunter, and Carr De Naskra. After her marriage ended, Lundy

continued her public stable at Belmont Park. In 1984, she started Minstrel Star in the Belmont Stakes. From 690 career starts, she won 85 races including back-to-back runnings of the Ashley T. Cole Handicap in 1990-91 with Kate's Valentine, who also took the 1990 Kingston Stakes.

Lundy won the Sam F. Davis Breeders’ Cup Stakes and the Tampa Bay Derby at Tampa Bay Downs in 1993 with Marco Bay and also conditioned stakes winners Audio Cassette and Talc's Coventry.

When she retired from training, she took a job as an assistant to Hall of Famer Bobby Frankel and stayed with him until his passing in 2009. Recently, Lundy was working for Carla Gaines as her stable secretary.

Funeral arrangements are pending but a celebration of life is currently being planned for late September/early October in Southern California. Lundy is survived by two brothers, Steve Caldwell and John Caldwell. BH

RECORD OBS JUNE HORSE RALLIES TO DEBUT WIN AT SARATOGABy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

While it took some time to get 3-year-old C Z Rocket to the

races, patience paid off for Frank Fletcher Racing Operations and trainer Al Stall Jr. as the high-priced son of City Zip rallied from seventh to post a clear victory in his debut Sept. 1 at Saratoga Race Course.

It's not the first time C Z Rocket has turned heads. He set a sale record when Fletcher landed him for $800,000 at last year's Ocala Breeders' Sales Company June Sale of 2-year-olds. He was consigned to the sale by Stephens Thoroughbreds, agent. Bred in Florida by Farm III Enterprizes, C Z Rocket is out of grade 3-placed Successful Sarah, by Successful Appeal.

On Friday, C Z Rocket and Jose Lezcano settled in seventh

after breaking a step slow in the 6 1/2-furlong maiden special weight race, while Tommy T blazed a quarter-mile in :21.89. After improving position in the turn, C Z Rocket swung five wide into the stretch where he rallied to a two-length win over Tommy T. C Z Rocket completed 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:16.21 on a fast track.

Going into his debut, C Z Rocket delivered four nice breezes at Saratoga for Stall, including an Aug. 13 move in :47.83 where he earned the bullet from six other workers at the distance, and an Aug. 20 half-mile breeze in :47.67 from the gate, second-fastest of 55. BH

RUN AWAY HEADS DEL MAR FUTURITY FOR SHAHBy BloodHorse Staff

Owner Kaleem Shah is hoping for a sense of déjà vu Sept. 4 at Del Mar, where his Best Pal Stakes (G2)

winner Run Away will head postward as the starting highweight in the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity (G1).

Last year Shah and Hall of Famer Bob Baffert teamed up to sweep Del Mar's major stakes for 2-year-olds—the Best Pal and the Futurity—with Klimt. The two parted ways at the end of 2016, so Shah will take on his old trainer with the Simon Callaghan-conditioned Run Away, a Run Away and Hide colt purchased for $325,000 from Wavertree Stables' consignment to the 2017 Barretts selected March 2-year-olds in training sale.

Baffert has both ends of the seven-furlong Futurity covered with Zayat Stables' Midnight Lute colt Zatter departing the outside post under Rafael Bejarano, and BCKH Stable and wife Jill Baffert's Indiana-bred Soul Streit leaving from the rail with Mike Smith aboard. Zatter was consigned by Warrendale Sales at the 2016 Keeneland September yearling sale, where he was acquired for $160,000. Soul Streit, by Maclean's Music, was a $85,000 buy from Darby Dan Farm's consignment to the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall 2016 yearling sale.

Should Run Away take down his eight juvenile opponents, it would mark the third consecutive Best Pal-Futurity sweep, on the heels of Klimt's run and

the 2015 sweep of eventual Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner Nyquist. Eventual Triple Crown winner American Pharoah also won the Del Mar Futurity, but came in as a maiden to get the job done.

Run Away will put a perfect record on the line when he leaves post 3 with Flavien Prat as part of a 123-pound impost.

"(Buying) Klimt, I was there but Bob selected the horse," Shah said. "(Buying) Run Away, I was there and my son (Arman) and I selected the horse. Most of my success has come from 2-year-old in training sales. I prefer them because at least you can see them run a little bit.

"Athleticism is the main thing. Conformation has to be reasonably good. But generally a well-conformed horse is very athletic."

Run Away showed the traits Shah looks for in a young horse at the sale, and has continued to improve with each race.

"He was very athletic and he had a very powerful hind end, which is typically a sign of a horse with a good engine," Shah said of his Barretts impressions. "He was very fluid in his moving. I hope he continues to improve and stays healthy."

Callaghan considers the Best Pal to be Run Away's best race to date, and Shah concurred.

"I thought he did it effortlessly," Shah said. "Obviously, there'll be better horses in the Futurity and even better in races further on. So, I hope and pray he continues to improve but three-for-three has got me dreaming."

Both Zatter and Soul Streit have one start and one win under their girths, each excelling in maiden special weight company at first asking in August at Del Mar.

The three who finished behind Run Away in the Best Pal will also take another shot; Holly and David Wilson's Dia de Pago rallied three-wide in the 6 1/2 furlong test but finished second by 3 1/2 lengths; Fleetwood put in a closing run to wind up third and best of the rest for Big Chief Racing, Rocker O Ranch, and Keith Desormeaux; and M Racing Group's Master Ruler wound up fourth after breaking inward but lacking a strong rally.

The remaining three are last-out winners Tatters to Riches, Bolt d'Oro, and Gracida, all of which are perfect in one start. BH

LUKAS HAS SPORTING CHANCE IN HOPEFUL STAKESBy Alicia Wincze Hughest @BH_AHughes

Four years ago, trainer D. Wayne Lukas took a son of Tiznow owned by Robert Baker and William Mack

into the Hopeful Stakes (G1) and let the racing com-munity know that the old ball coach was far from done schooling others at the top level.

The Hall of Fame conditioner isn't above going back to the well of what has worked for him previously. So for Sept. 4, two days after what will be his 82nd birthday, Lukas will send another bay son of Tiznow owned by Baker and Mack into the seven-furlong Hopeful with designs on delivering another reminder why he is among the best ever.

Sporting Chance will aim to give Lukas his eighth win in the $350,000 Hopeful Stakes when he breaks

from post 6 in a field of eight on the closing day of the Saratoga Race Course meeting.

Lukas earned his seventh Hopeful win in 2013, when Strong Mandate romped to a 9 3/4-length win carrying the same colors Sporting Chance will wear Monday. The latter comes into this year's Hopeful off a 2 1/4-length maiden win at the Spa on July 22, and has been flattered by some of his prior company. In his debut at Churchill Downs June 15, Sporting Chance ran second to Dak Attack, who went on to win the Ellis Park Juvenile Stakes Aug. 20.

"I feel good. I feel like my horse is a very, very solid horse," Lukas said. "But it is a contentious field. At this stage of my career, I am not so naïve to think I can overpower them in a grade 1 at Saratoga. On the other hand, we have grandiose ideas that we have a pretty good horse.

"Every trainer will tell you, 'Mine will rate. Mine will rate.' Mine will. One thing about him, he is very easy to train. A caveman could train him. He is very manageable—very professional. He really does everything right, almost to the point of a fault."

The pace setup among the field shows an abundance of speed, but Lukas said his colt, who has been on the front end in both races, shouldn't have a problem leaving the gate.

"Well, that won't affect us. We have been working on rating him," Lukas said.

Mr. Amore Stables' Firenze Fire enters the Hopeful undefeated through two starts. The Poseidon's Warrior colt drew off to win his debut at Monmouth Park in June by 3 1/2 lengths, which was followed by his victory by a length in the Sanford Stakes (G3) at Saratoga July 22 for trainer Jason Servis.

The youngster has shown the ability to rate early and pounce late, which may prove key in a race seemingly filled with speed.

The Albaugh Family Stable-owned and Dale Romans-trained Free Drop Billy, off his runner-up finish to Firenze Fire in the Sanford, will look to turn the tables with the extra furlong in the Hopeful. His Sanford effort came after the Union Rags colt fired off

a three-length victory in his debut at Churchill Downs June 15.

"I like our horse," Romans said. "I think we've got a big chance. He's doing super, (he's a) good horse, (and) he's coming into it right. (The) farther the better. Hopefully there's some speed in front and we get to run by them. He's just training good. I always thought he was a good horse, and he's run well in his races."

Another who will look to make his presence felt during the seven-panel event is Fort Springs Racing's Psychoanalyze, who hails from trainer Brian Lynch's barn. The son of Overanalyze won a game duel by three-quarters of a length in his debut at 14-1 at Belmont Park in June, and returned with a stalking trip in the Sanford but was outkicked in the late stages and settled for third.

"We've given him a bit of freshening after the Sanford," Lynch said. "He seemed to take the worst of it from the inside. He seems to be training good. We're starting to stretch him out and (hopefully) he identifies himself."

Trainer Todd Pletcher will send a pair, Mojovation and National Flag to the gate. The former, a son of Quality Road, rated nicely in his sole start to win by two lengths July 29 at Saratoga. National Flag brings an extra race. After a tiring seventh-place finish in his debut, the Speightstown colt returned Aug. 5 to best eight others by 1 1/4 lengths after a bump-filled six-furlong run. RECALLING SONGBIRD'S TWO BREEDERS' CUP RUNSBy Frank Angstt @BH_FAngst

While Songbird will not make a third Breeders' Cup World Championships appearance this year

after owner Rick Porter announced her retirement Aug. 31, the two-time champion filly left her mark on the event with a pair of memorable runs.

At 2, Songbird turned in one of the most dominating performances in Breeders' Cup history when she led at every call and cruised home to a 5 3/4-length victory in the 14 Hands Winery Juvenile Fillies (G1) at Keeneland in 2015. She finished second last year in the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1), but after giving no quarter in a stretch run that saw champion Beholder prevail by a nose in a finish at Santa Anita Park that will be long-remembered.

A look back at the two races through the pages of BloodHorse magazine:

After Mike Smith guided Songbird to easy victory in the Juvenile Fillies, Porter said he had confidence in his young filly but still had race nerves.

"I knew we had the best horse going in," Porter said. "But the problem is I've had the best horse in races before and I'm still upset after a loss. But I was confident.... We got a great trip by a great jockey and the rest is history."—Greg Hall

Jockey Gary Stevens guided Beholder to last year's narrow Distaff victory, where he had an

up-close view of Songbird's heart."Down the stretch we put

Songbird away three different times but she wouldn't go away,"

Stevens said after the race. "Hats off to Songbird. She was gallant."—Lenny Shulman BH

BONUS INCREASE FOR MARYLAND-BREDS BY MARYLAND STALLIONSBy BloodHorse Staff

Beginning with the 2017 fall meet at Laurel Park, a 50% breeder bonus (the regular 30% plus an

additional 20%) will be paid to breeders of registered Maryland-breds by Maryland stallions who win a maiden race in Maryland.

The Maryland Horse Breeders Association reports the additional money will reward those who breed their mares in Maryland and keep those horses in the state to break their maiden. The program offers opportunities for all categories of horses, from maidens to stakes horses.

"Anything we can do to encourage breeders is a good investment in the future, and one of the best things we can do as an industry. This Maryland-sired breeder bonus will help a lot of folks," said Mike Pons, whose family stands stallions at Country Life Farm in Bel Air. "We estimate it will add another $250,000 to the breeders' bottom lines. It's one more thing to make breeding, foaling and racing in Maryland more attractive."

This new bonus for breeders of Maryland-bred, Maryland-sired horses is in addition to the Maryland Million maiden bonus paid to the owner of a Maryland Million-eligible horse who breaks its maiden in the state. This incentive offers a chance to get an

SHARP SAMURAI, GLATT CAN CONTINUE RISE IN DEL MAR DERBYBy Jeremy Balant @BH_JBalan

Deep down trainer Mark Glatt knew he was safe, but he had to make sure.

After Sharp Samurai's 9 1/4-length maiden victory for a $75,000 claiming price Feb. 10 going one mile on the dirt at Santa Anita Park, the winner's circle could wait.

"The first place I walked to was that claim box," Glatt said.

Sure enough, after an eighth-place finish in his maiden special weight debut in November of 2016—in which he finished 19 1/4 lengths behind winner Beach Bum—nobody took the $75,000 plunge to take the 3-year-old son of First Samurai, so his trainer could breathe a sigh of relief.

"When a horse runs as bad as he did first time out, you're pretty safe," Glatt said. "As a guy who claims horses, it's a tough sell. If you're telling an owner, 'Here, look at this horse that got beat 15, 20 lengths' for $75,000, you better be right, or you're not going to be

working for that owner very long."Nearly seven months after his maiden win, the

gelding owned by Glatt in partnership with Red Baron's Barn and Rancho Temescal has a chance to punctuate a standout summer meet at Del Mar for his trainer in the $250,000 Del Mar Derby (G2T) Sept. 3.

The last-out La Jolla Handicap (G3T) winner has propelled Glatt—along with stablemate Blackjackcat, who won the Del Mar Mile Handicap (G2T)—into a third-place tie with Doug O'Neill and Peter Miller (13 wins entering Thursday) in the Del Mar trainer's standings, with close to half the starters, and just two victories behind leader Phil D'Amato.

"All his success came after he was gelded (following his debut)," Glatt said. "I always felt in the back of my mind that I would have to geld him, but you just have to run them once or twice to see if he could be a stallion, because that's what I would have preferred.

"But I could tell he wasn't going to focus and run to his ability. He wasn't cheap and wasn't expensive (he was an $85,000 purchase), but we needed to get him going and it's been fairly smooth sailing since."

After his maiden victory came a sixth-place run back on the Santa Anita dirt in an optional-claiming allowance against eventual graded stakes winner and classic-placed Battle of Midway in March.

Sharp Samurai's true "light-bulb" moment may have come the first time he took to the turf.

A bobbled start only temporarily hampered the gelding en route to a 2 1/4-length allowance victory at Santa Anita April 6. He then won the June 10 Rainbow Stakes and continued to build his résumé with his La Jolla victory. Sharp Samurai's only loss on turf came to fellow Del Mar Derby entrant Bowies Hero in the May 6 Singletary Stakes.

All along, however, Sharp Samurai has walked the line of being competitively rambunctious but not overly aggressive—even after he was gelded.

"He's still a bit of a tough horse," Glatt said. "He's usually on an even keel, but he'll take a shot at you if he gets a chance. You don't want them docile, but you

don't want them mean, either."Bowies Hero won the Oceanside Stakes July 19 to

kick off the trio of turf stakes restricted to 3-year-olds at Del Mar this summer, but took the La Jolla off. Agave Racing Stable and Hebert Bloodstock's Artie Schiller colt is undefeated in two starts on the Del Mar grass, which includes the Del Mar Juvenile Turf Stakes a year ago. The D'Amato trainee's only loss of 2017 came in the Pennine Ridge Stakes (G3T) in June at Belmont Park, where he finished fourth, just 2 3/4 lengths behind the likes of multiple grade 1 winner Oscar Performance and multiple graded winner Good Samaritan.

The only other graded winner in the field is George Krikorian's homebred Big Score, who took the Transylvania Stakes Presented by Keeneland Select (G3T) in April at Keeneland. The Tim Yakteen-trained Mr. Big colt finished eighth last time out in the Belmont Derby Invitational Stakes (G1T) July 8, but has run well on the Del Mar turf in the past. He broke his maiden by 2 3/4 lengths in his debut in July of 2016 and finished second to Bowies Hero in last year's Del Mar Juvenile Turf. BH

VERTICAL OAK HEADS FIELD OF NINE IN PRIORESSBy Mary LaRuet @BH_MLaRue

Kirk and Judy Robison's Vertical Oak will head a field of nine

3-year-old fillies in the $250,000 Prioress Stakes (G2) Sept. 3 at Saratoga Race Course.

The Giant Oak filly is seeking her first win since scoring back-to-back victories in the April 29 Goldfinch Stakes at Prairie Meadows and the May 19 Adena Springs Miss Preakness Stakes (G3) at Pimlico Race Course, both at the Prioress' six-furlong distance.

In her next start June 11, Vertical Oak slammed the gate at the start of Belmont Park's Jersey Girl Stakes, was pulled up and declared a non-starter. The Steve Asmussen trainee finished second in the 6 1/2-furlong Victory Ride Stakes (G3) July 9 at Belmont behind American Gal. She was fifth in her last start, the Aug. 5 Longines Test Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, also won by American Gal.

Vertical Oak's main competition in the Prioress could be from the Todd Pletcher-trained Nonna Mela, who won her season debut Aug. 7 by 4 1/2 lengths over an optional-claiming allowance field at Saratoga.

St. Elias Stable's lightly raced Nonna Mela broke her maiden in her second start going five furlongs, when she won by 7 1/4 lengths in July of 2016 at Monmouth Park. She then won the Adirondack Stakes (G2) at Saratoga by six lengths before she finished fourth

in the one-mile Frizette Stakes (G1) Oct. 8 at Belmont—her last race of the year.

Asmussen's other entry is William and Corinne Heiligbrodt's Golden Mischief, who finished fourth in the Victory Ride last time out.

There are several allowance winners stepping up in class.

Lady Sheila Stable's Downtown Mamais undefeated in three starts. She broke her maiden at Laurel Park in April. A month later, she took a Belmont allowance by three lengths, and scored in an optional-claiming allowance July 13 at Belmont in her most recent start.

Trainer Linda Rice picked up the daughter of Speightstown for $440,000 at the Ocala Breeders' Sales spring sale of 2-year-olds

in training from the Wavertree Stables consignment. The filly previously was a $190,000 RNA at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale.

Joseph Bulger's Royal Inheritance, trained by David Cannizzo, has won four of five starts. Her only loss was a second-place finish in a May 7 allowance race at Belmont going 6 1/2 furlongs on the main track. She has won all four of her starts going six furlongs.

Breaking from the rail is Gary Broad's Student Body. Trained by Christopher Davis, the daughter of Colonel John exits a front-running 11-length win in a first-level allowance sprint at Ellis Park while geared down in a time of 1:08.21. BH
