DESCRIPTION

Known as the "Harbor of Hospitality," Elizabeth City is a waterfront community on the eastern seaboard, just 45 minutes from the Norfolk/Hampton Roads area of Virginia and adjacent to North Carolina’s legendary Outer Banks. Whenever five boats or more come into the harbor at the same time‚ they are feted with a wine and cheese party sponsored by the Rose Buddies‚ a group dedicated to extending a warm welcome to Elizabeth City’s visitors. Among its many accolades, Elizabeth City has been named one of “The 100 Best Small Towns in America” three times.

Ray Meiggs says 12,000 to 15,000 people visit Elizabeth City annually, thanks to Arts of the Albermarle.

“Our organization is thriving these days and provides a strong heartbeat in downtown Elizabeth City, with thousands of visitors coming to the Center on Main Street for theatrical performances, arts shows and exhibitions, various education classes and studio work,” says Meiggs, executive director at Arts of the Albemarle.

A Hub of EnergyAOA is a state-of-the-art center with

a 230-seat performing arts theater and a visual arts gallery that showcases works from 250 artists, craftsmen and photographers.

“AOA has become a hub of energy downtown, and we are now teaming with Port Discover Children’s Science Center as well as Museum of the Albemarle to make the district even more energetic,” Meiggs says. “These three anchor crown jewels of the downtown district have started an initiative called Elizabeth City H.A.S. It, with H.A.S. being an acronym for history, arts and science. We are all collaborating on programs and marketing efforts to make the district even more of a destination for tourists.”

The three major colleges in Elizabeth City have good news, with a big emphasis on new.

New developments at College of The Albemarle, Elizabeth City State University and Mid-Atlantic

Christian University have positioned Elizabeth City for the future. College of The Albemarle even has a new president – Dr. Kandi Deitemeyer – who took office in April 2010.

serving, Expanding, and CelebratingCollege of The Albemarle (COA) continues to see record

enrollment as northeastern NC’s comprehensive community college that residents rely on for an affordable, high quality education. The college offers over 30 programs of study in college transfer preparedness and technical education programs. the college is also committed to workforce development and is expanding thanks to two Golden LEAF grants totaling $830,000. COA is able to fully implement its Aviation Sheet Metal Worker Training Program and develop key training modules. Modules will be offered in avionics, mechanical, electrical, electronics, sheet metal, and composites. These modules form an initial foundation that will lead to full implementation of an FAA certified Airframe and Power Plant Training program in the future.

The college is also commemorating a milestone. “College of The Albemarle is excited to be celebrating its 50th anniversary with the citizens and communities within its seven county

We are celebrating our past and looking forward to striving toward excellence in the next fifty years.”

just What the doctor OrderedAt Elizabeth City State University, part of its

function is to serve as a branch campus for the University of North Carolina’s Eshelman School of Pharmacy. A new $28 million, 52,500-square-foot Pharmacy Complex building opened on the Elizabeth City State University campus in 2010 to support the partnership program between ECSU and UNC.

“We offer 37 baccalaureate degrees and four master’s degrees, and ECSU is best known for our outstanding signature programs – pharmacy and aviation,” says Willie Gilchrist, Elizabeth City State University president.

In 2005, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy specifically launched the UNC/ECSU Pharmacy Partnership Program to increase the number of pharmacists practicing in North Carolina. There is a particular focus on reaching under served populations, especially those in the northeastern part of the state.

The pharmacy students at ECSU receive classroom instructions from faculty at the

Chapel Hill site via interactive, real-time video-teleconferencing technology, as well as from faculty based at ECSU in the Pharmacy Complex.

bachelor LifeAt Mid-Atlantic Christian, the university has

introduced two new degree programs for people who once attended college but never finished. Students can earn a bachelor of science degree in organizational leadership with a minor in Biblical studies, or a bachelor of science degree in family studies with a minor in Biblical studies.

“These two degrees are ideal for someone who already has an associate’s degree,” says Kevin Larsen, vice president for academic affairs at Mid-Atlantic Christian. “It doesn’t matter if a person earned their associate’s degree 20 or 30 years ago. They can simply enroll with us and be on their way to one of the two bachelor degrees.”

military-Friendly schoolMid-Atlantic Christian University is also

considered a military-friendly school that offers scholarships for military students and veterans, and readmits veterans to their same academic status if they are called into active duty – as long as the leave of absence isn’t greater than 10 semesters.

“Mid-Atlantic Christian is all about preparing students for good careers after university life,” Larsen says.

barbecue in North Carolina really means one thing – pork.

Elizabeth City and the surrounding area have their share

of fine barbecue establishments, with popular restaurants such as Barbecue Barn, Bob-B-Q and Famous Franks Hot Dogs & Grille. There is also Captain Bob’s, a well-known eatery that has catered to customers in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia for 25 years. North Carolina barbecue is generally chopped, although there are many people who prefer it pulled.

slow Cooking is keyCurrituck BBQ Company owner Paul Robinson

says this restaurant has a style like no other.Usually Eastern North Carolina BBQ has

a strong vinegar taste, however ours is lightly seasoned and lends itself to any of our multiple signature sauces.

Since we opened in 2006 we have perfected our cooking technique with slow cooking and hickory smoke. The meats are enhanced with our specialty rubs before cooking. This is true for all meats including pork, chicken and beef.

Robinson says that besides barbequed pork, Currituck BBQ has also made a name for itself with its beef brisket.

Our mac and cheese and sweet potato casserole have become a staple for many who travel this highway but it is certainly our barbeque that gets most people in the door.

dry Rub Adds spiceAt Jackie’s Diner on East Main Street in the

heart of Elizabeth City, owner and chef John Herlihy says he uses a non-traditional way of preparing barbecue dishes.

“Every cook does things differently, and I personally don’t use any barbecue sauces whatsoever on the meats we serve,” he says. “I use strictly a dry rub of herbs and spices when I cook, then the sauce is up to each customer’s individual taste when the lunch or dinner is served. We make six of our own table sauces here at Jackie’s Diner.”

meat Loaf Too?Besides pulled pork, Herlihy says his

restaurant’s menu also includes barbecued chicken, beef brisket and ribs.

“Actually, one additional specialty dish I make that nobody else prepares – and I’ve been cooking it for years – is a smoked meat loaf,” Herlihy says. “The smoking makes a nice f lavor in the meat, and it doesn’t come out greasy like meat loaf in a pan that sits in an oven for hours. Plus I add the seasonings that makes it an incredible meal.”

Herlihy, who owns Jackie’s Diner with his wife Betsy, adds that he cooks all meats in a smoker but doesn’t use any flavored wood.

“My meats cook just as well with plain old oak – I don’t taste any difference in the flavoring,” he says. “The bottom line is that pulled pork sandwiches go very quickly here with customers, with so much good flavor in all the meats thanks to the dry rub.”

A Rising Story By mEGAN pACELLA

The United States Coast Guard is the lifeblood of Elizabeth City. With a Base, Air Station, Aviation Logistics Center (ALC), Aviation Technical Training Center (ATTC) and Small Boat Station all located

just 4 miles south, the city has a long history steeped in USCG pride.

Officially opened on August 15, 1940, as a seaplane base, the air station was the first of the Coast Guard commands in Elizabeth City. Today, the air station has five long-range aircraft and four helicopters. The unit’s missions include search and rescue; law enforcement for fisheries, drug and migrants; aids to navigation logistics f light support; marine environmental protection; the International Ice Patrol; and operational f lights for other federal, state and local agencies.

Just how big is the Coast Guard presence? Today, there are about 900 active duty members and 600 civilian employees associated with the USCG in the Elizabeth City area. The annual Coast Guard payroll is about $32 million. The Base staff maintain 800 acres of real estate, including more than 5 miles of runways and taxiways, 4 miles of roads, 68 buildings and units of Coast Guard-owned family housing.

Thanks to a strong active-duty presence, Elizabeth City aircraft have a far reach: They routinely conduct missions from as far as South America, as well as along the east coast of the United States and Canada. All Elizabeth City units stepped in to respond to the Gulf Oil Spill disaster in May 2010. Representatives from the Coast Guard’s National Strike

Force in Elizabeth City reported to oil spill sites in the Gulf of Mexico, Louisiana and areas west of the Mississippi River to skim oil from the surface of the water or tracking reports of oil traces found in the Mississippi River.

Visit www.elizcity.com/chamber for more information about the Coast Guard in Elizabeth City.

Telephonics Corporation in Elizabeth CityBetween security and surveillance technology which

includes radar and advanced electronics systems, Telephonics has positioned itself in Elizabeth City to better support the Coast Guard and the local economy.

“The Coast Guard presence here is absolutely huge,” says Joe Mihelic, director of Operations at Telephonics. “Elizabeth City is 100 percent a Coast Guard City.”

The USCG has provided a significant portion of work for the Elizabeth City-based branch of Telephonics, which repairs aircraft radar systems and performs aircraft systems upgrades.

“We are serving the Coast Guard to make them a stronger unit; we’re working to streamline operations,” Mihelic says. The advantage of being collocated with the Coast Guard is that Telephonics can reduce shipping time and cost associated with repairs and provide direct on-site technical support.

“We’re proud to serve the Coast Guard, Mihelic adds. “They make this city a better place to live.”

chamber reportelizabeth City area Chamber oF CommerCe turns 100

The Elizabeth City Area Chamber of Commerce looks good for

100 years old.The chamber that represents

Elizabeth City, Pasquotank County and Camden County will be celebrating the monumental achievement throughout 2011. The official kickoff will begin in February when the chamber hosts its 100th annual membership dinner.

“Elizabeth City has been the economic hub of the Northeast for over 200 years.” We are proud of all the growth that we have encouraged in the last 100 years.”

Renovation CompleteAn early 100th birthday present

to itself occurred in 2010 when the chamber completed an extensive renovation of its existing headquarters on East Ehringhaus Street.

“The building got a new roof, new shutters and nice landscaping – it was a pleasing facelift for the corner of Elizabeth City where we are located,” Palestrant says. “We’ve gotten a lot of nice comments about the renovation.”

Lunch and LearnAs for its operations, Palestrant says

the chamber began a new initiative in 2010 called State of the State Luncheon, which involved teaming with four other chambers to invite state legislators to talk about what was happening in North Carolina.

“North Carolina was faced with an extremely difficult budget to balance in 2010, with a lot of pain but a lot of gain achieved,” she says. “The sold-out luncheon featured General Assembly and Senate members explaining the budget, plus talking about the rural northeastern part of North Carolina where Elizabeth City is located. The

luncheon was a huge success, and we plan to have one every year from now on.”

dancing in the streetsAlso in 2010, the chamber organized

a Harbor Nights free concert series on the first Friday evenings in June, August and September.

“We had live bands and admission was free,” Palestrant says. “The last band in September was a popular one around here called Out In the Cold, and there were 1,000 people on the waterfront for the performance that evening.”

supporting schoolsThe chamber also got behind a school

supply drive in 2010 for the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools and the Camden County Schools.

“The donations were amazing, to the point where individual schools had to come by the chamber office twice to pick up all the boxes – my conference room looked like an Office Max,” Palestrant says. “For example, more than 1,000 boxes of crayons alone were donated. It was incredible.”
