EP 8 HSE House Rules

I Understand the rules for a job or I find out

I wear the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the task

I use the right tools for the job and use them correctly

I keep my workplace clean, tidy and free of obstruction

I hold the handrail when using the stairs

I do use a seatbelt and do not use a mobile phone whilst driving

I stop any job that feels unsafe

I reduce sources of waste

ExamplesRules will vary depending on where you work and what you do: • Facility specific: I will use necessary personal protective equipment where appropriate

• Activity specific: I will check all passengers on my bus are wearing seatbelts before driving off

• Office specific: I will always hold the hand rail when using the stairs

What are the rules about?

• HSE golden rules are about behaviour

•The rules are not new, but aim to give greater focus and priority to certain behaviours

• They cover three desired behaviours that we must all apply, all of the time in every operation and activity

• Two rules have an ‘internal’ focus (comply, intervene), one has an ‘external’ focus (respect)

• ‘You and I’ underlines the importance of individual and collective accountability

• The rules fit well with Enterprise First and its emphasis on leadership, accountability & teamwork

Why do we need them?

• Improving HSE performance is a Group priority:

Employees and contractors lost their lives at work in 2006

Non-compliance and lack of intervention are the main underlying causes of serious incidents

We have more to do to rebuild community trust

• The next major step forward will come from changing behaviours, NOT more standards and procedures

• A global set of simple rules makes clear what is expected

Page 8: HSEGolden Rules Rollout Strategies

How will the rules work?

• Cascaded through the business line starting from, and including, leadership team

• Discussion between individuals and supervisors

• Enables and motivates staff to think how they behave individually and as part of a team

• Personal accountabilities included in tasks and targets and assessed at appraisal

Do they make sense?

Do you and I intervene?

Do you and I respect our neighbours?

Tasks & targets

What rules apply to you and I?

Page 10: HSEGolden Rules Rollout Strategies

Just another initiative?

The rules are not new, but aim to give greater focus and priority to certain behaviours:

• We do already do many of these things, but not in a structured manner and at all times

• The rules aim to affect and change behaviours – reinforcing behaviours and attitudes that we all must and can apply

• They will be applied through a cascade - motivating and enabling staff to think about behaviours and agree accountabilities

• They will be written into tasks and targets and assessed as part of annual appraisal

Links with other activities

The rules fit well with other Group initiatives:

• Strong link to Enterprise First - leadership, accountability and teamwork

• First step in HSE accountability is clear expectations• Golden Rules provide a global set of simple, clear expectations for behaviour that apply to us all

• SGBP, Compliance: amplifying core values of honesty, integrity, respect

• Group and Business HSE – providing a framework for other activities:

- Hearts and minds- Common and clear policies and standards- HSE Competence

Golden Rules and Hearts and Minds

We understand and accept what should be done and know what is expected of us

• Requires clear HSE expectations – what you expect of others and what others expect of you

• Golden Rules provide a global set of simple, clear expectations that apply to us all

We work safely because we are intrinsically motivated to do the right things naturally, not just because we are told to, and make interventions and actively participate in improvement activities

• Golden Rules encourage intervention and motivate us all to do the right thing
