What is the Era of Good Feelings?
• The War of 1812 caused feelings of unity and patriotism throughout the country
• 1816 – James Monroe becomes president in a landslide election
• A Boston newspapers called this time the Era of Good Feelings.
• Improve the infrastructure of the United States so Northern States could send their manufactured goods to farmers in the West and South. In addition, the farmers in the West and South could send their crops north to be sold.
• Thus, a trade network would be established that would benefit the entire nation.
• He also called for a new Bank of the United States and higher tariffs (tax on imports)
How did the 2nd Bank of the US help the economy?
• The charter for the First Bank of the US expired in 1811, and in 1816 the Republican Congress brought the national bank back.
• Since the closing of the first bank, state banks had made too many loans and allowed too much money into circulation (INFLATION!)
• The Second Bank of the United States restored order to the money supply, helping American business grow
How did the Tariff of 1816 help America?
• The British produced goods of higher quality and lower prices than goods made in America. Naturally, Americans preferred a better, less expensive product.
• Congress passed the Tariff of 1816 to address this problem
• The tariff was designed to protect American manufacturers from foreign competition by placing high taxes on imports.

What was the Missouri Compromise?
• In 1819 Missouri applied for statehood, but wanted to be admitted as a slave-owning state.
• This angered many northerners, so a compromise was reached.
• Missouri Compromise- Maine would enter the Union as a free state, and Missouri would enter as a slave state.
• The compromise also blocked slavery north of the Missouri’s southern border (36°30′ N Latitude)
Monroe Doctrine• In Latin America, it is a period of revolution
and liberation.• Chile, Venezuela, Mexico and Brazil have
gained their freedom from Spain and Portugal. The United States recognizes them as legitimate countries.
• America fears that other foreign countries may now want to control these countries in Latin America.
Monroe Doctrine• Warns European nations that they cannot set
up colonies or interfere in Latin American problems anymore.
• The United States will protect North and South America from any European influence.
• The United States will not involve itself in European affairs militarily or politically.
