l Issues related to marketing, trade and export promotion.
l Issues related to livelihood for small & marginal farmers.
l Role in maintaining environmental security.
BackgroundHorticultural crop production during 2012-13 (268.84 million tonnes) has surpassed the foodgrain production (255.36 million tonnes) for the first time in the history of Indian Agriculture. It has happened due to concerted efforts of all those engaged in R&D of Horticulture and active participation of the private sector and more importantly farmers of the country. The forthcoming challenge is the sustainability of horticulture growth to make the sector viable and attractive for the growers, industry and consumers. Despite ample increase in production of horticultural crops, the low productivity in several crops is still a challenge. Since the land available for expansion of horticulture is limited, emphasis has to be laid on improving productivity to meet the future demands of the country and make horticulture more remunerative, particularly to the small and marginal farmers.

Why Coimbatore for International Horti Fest?1. Coimbatore has a strong engineering industry base with not many companies
in the Horticulture. Value addition, availability of farm labour, water and precision horticultural techniques is in short supply in this entire region, which is an opportunity to solution providers from these sectors.
2. Coimbatore is the hub for agro-commercial activities for spices, horticulture, tea and coffee, vegetables, fruits, coconut, turmeric & sugarcane. Horticulture being predominant in this region opens up opportunities for Green / Poly Houses and also cold storage for supply chain.
3. Coimbatore is in need of solution providers to minimise post harvest losses.
4. It is the home for leading institutions like Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Sugarcane Breeding Institute, Cotton Research Centre, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, which impart knowledge and create self sustaining entrepreneurs.
5. Coimbatore has been shortlisted under the Solar City Project by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Govt of India which open enormous opportunities for Solar Pumping and Panels.
6. Coimbatore is well connected to the other parts of India by rail, road and air, Excellent air connectivity with Bangalore and Chennai ensures quick transfer to foreign countries too.
