It’s Independence Day, Let Freedom Ring!

Times leading up to the writing of the Declaration of Independence were forged by the overbearing rule of Great Britain. The colonists had risked it all to come to the new world, where they would be free; however, they found themselves oppressed without rights. On July 4, 1776 the final wording of the Declaration of Independence was approved and the document was published. The Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies were no longer subject to the monarch of Britain and were now united, free, and independent states. To this very day, we celebrate many freedoms as a result of this declaration of independence. Personally, I do not think there would be a United States today, had it not been for the Declaration of Independence. Our forefathers were willing to die to make the colonies into what the people were seeking; Freedom. The documents contain this phrase: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." I can’t help but consider my own life when it comes to freedom and independence. Although my life overall has been comparatively easy, I like to think of things I have today because of the sacrifices of others. This got me to thinking…what would I die for? I will tell you; it is a short list. During my lifetime, I have not ever been faced with that decision. (Praise the Lord) So undoubtedly I would die for my husband and my children. Maybe I would die for a few family members and friends and some freedoms. It is hard to say since I grew up in the United States of America and have not been faced with those decisions. The happier thought is all of the freedoms that I have as a result of Independence Day: I am free to worship my God, homeschool my children, live where I choose, work the job I want… I think you get the idea. I could go on forever. For me, to understand these freedoms, I must consider the greatest sacrifice that was ever made for me. It was made by a man who loved me more than any other because His Father loved me more than any other. On a cross, He gave His life…for me. This action, like the Declaration of Independence, forged freedom for all those who accept it. Because I accepted Christ, I am free on every imaginable level. Did you know that the Resource Center offers New to Homeschool Orientations? If you or someone you know is just beginning the homeschool journey, this is a GREAT place to start. We show a short video from THSC’s Tim Lambert about the history and law regarding homeschooling in Texas. After that, one of our experienced staff will take you through an outline of everything you need to know about the practical side of homeschooling, including showing you lots of great samples of curriculum and where to purchase them. The orientation lasts about 1 hour, and you will have plenty of time to ask questions. The cost for orientation is $35 per family. It can be especially helpful to bring your spouse and older children so they also hear what is expected and what can be gained. If you need to bring younger children, we have a place for them to sit and color or play quietly. You can even bring your skeptical family or friends and ease their fears. Orientations are offered Monday-Thursday at different times each day.

Choosing classes can be a daunting task. To make your job easier, we have arranged the Classes in several different formats. You can use Ctrl-F on your keyboard to search any page for any text on the page, like a teacher’s or class’s name. These pages are in the Menu under “Coop” > “Class Information”. No government help, no tax cuts or credits and no school vouchers are available to help with this expense. However, God has used the generous donations of others to help those that just need a little more help purchasing just the right materials to educate their children at home. Because of these gifts, FEAST is pleased to announce that once again educational scholarships are available to families who have a financial need. If you need help purchasing your homeschool books for the 2019/2020 school year... FEAST is here to help!

To Qualify:• Family lives in Bexar, Kendall, Guadalupe, Wilson, Atascosa, Medina, Bandera, Comal, or Blanco Counties.• Children must be between 6 to 18 years of age as of September 1 of the applicable school year.• Family must have successfully completed at least one (1) year of homeschooling.• Family agrees to partner with FEAST by volunteering at FEAST one day each month.• Family must meet the income eligibility guidelines (see chart below)

Then come learn about the weapons and tools we need to be free and feel better! We will have victory and not let food control us! So join us as we share and encourage each other in this fight.

We encourage an atmosphere without judgment and condemnation where you can share your experiences and learn with and from other homeschool moms!

We have upgraded…Next year will include more training and opportunities! Student Council will be a class which will meet every Thursday at 8am for 50 minutes. This hour was picked because it does not conflict with any other classes because there are no other classes at 8am. This will also enable more productive time as it is scheduled and does not overlap with lunch or devotions. Do you have children that like to do outdoorsy things? Hiking in the woods, building a fire and cooking over it? What about camping under the stars in a tent? Do you want your children to know basic first aid, knot tying, and other life skills? Or maybe you have a child that loves the water, you know, swimming, canoeing, sailing, scuba diving? All the fun stuff that scouts are known for! Or maybe you want your children to learn how to be good stewards of our resources and overall to better serve our community? Answered yes to any of these and wondering what scouts can do for your family? Come, hear Paul Watje (Eagle Scout and homeschool dad) and learn how you can do scouting with your child or your entire family! He would like to show you how your child can be an official Scout through a traditional troop or a Lone Scout (homeschool style). His two teen sons will be available to share their current adventures in scouting. Paul’s wife, Jeanette, can also answer any questions and how this was a blessing to do this with their two older sons that are Eagle Scouts and their daughter that was in Sea Scouts and all four of them went backpacking at Philmont. Scouts are now open to females, so come hear how your family can use this program for the entire family. We look forward to sharing our experience and helping answer if scouts are a fit for your family goals. The fun awaiting your family and resources that are available to you through the Boy Scouts of America program is amazing!

Speaker Bio: Jeanette Watje is the FEAST Community Outreach Coordinator. Married to her best friend, Paul for 27 years, they have ten children, ages 5 to 26, five grandkids, and twin granddaughters on the way! Jeanette has led multiple women’s groups, speaks on organization and marriage, and enjoys using her task-oriented abilities to plan fun events. This upcoming school year will see many workshops offered for homeschooling families every month. We will be offering workshops on many topics including: “ Chess for Moms & Kids,” “Choosing and caring for the best pet for your family” presented by the San Antonio Humane Society, and many others. General workshops will be offered on the 2nd Wednesday of every month at 10am

We will be offering classes for parents of High Schoolers on the 4th Wednesday of every month. We will start with topics that include: transcripts, Texas state requirements for graduation, how to graduate your child, testing, and more. We will then venture into scholarships, admissions, how to get your athlete scouted for athletic scholarships, how to get your child admitted to the college of your choice, and more. We will be offering a talk on “College Prep” given by the Director of International and Veteran Student Services at Houston Baptist University. Many other speakers will be contacted and will be sharing their expertise.

We are looking for suggestions on topics you would like to see addressed. We can do a whole workshop, if needed, answering the most pressing questions of homeschool moms, and how to get past homeschool burnout. Send your suggestions to [email protected]. Also, if you know someone who has a wonderful topic to present, please contact me with his or her information. I love suggestions from our families! Your input is exactly what we need!

The following general recommendations can be used to guide athletes in making food and beverage choices on the day of competition.

ONE HOUR OR LESS BEFORE AN EVENT•Drink water. Train athletes to keep a personal water bottle by their side at all times and sip to match their thirst level. Don’t promote over-hydrating (urine runs clear, looks like water) by assigning athletes specific amounts to drink. •Maintain muscle and liver glycogen levels with liquid carbohydrates by sipping sports drinks. •Eat fruits like oranges, grapes, peaches, pears, and chunks of melon. These fruits are mostly carbohydrate and water, and they digest quickly. •Limit solid foods. The more solid food eaten, the longer it takes to digest. Being nervous, excited, or over-heated further slows digestion.

TWO TO THREE HOURS BEFORE AN EVENT•Drink healthy beverages, such as water, sports drinks, juices, and low-fat milk, to maximize hydration. •Eat easily digested carbohydrate-rich foods, like fruit, bagels, crackers, rice cakes, pretzels, breadsticks, bread with jam or jelly, cold or hot cereal, flour tortillas, and rice. Many athletes also will tolerate small amounts of protein, such as low-fat or drinkable yogurt or a modest amount of peanut butter. •Wait until after the competition to eat whole grains and other high fiber foods. Fiber adds bulk and typically slows the exit of food from the stomach, increasing the chance of digestive problems during exercise. •Drink plenty of fluid along with any energy bars consumed. Energy bars are very dense and require adequate fluid to speed their digestion and travel through the digestive system.

FOUR HOURS OR MORE BEFORE AN EVENT•Drink healthy fluids like water, sports drinks, low-fat milk, juices for complete hydration. •Have a balanced meal that is mostly carbohydrates and also includes some lean meat or other low-fat protein option. Most athletes can tolerate a small to modest amount of fat, which helps them feel full longer and avoid experiencing hunger pangs while waiting for the competition to begin. •Don’t overdo high-fat and fried foods, as these items take much longer to digest. During exercise, the goal is for blood to carry oxygen to hard-working muscles, not for it to be diverted to the stomach or small intestines to finish digestion.

HERE ARE SOME FOOD OPTIONS FOR ATHLETES WHO HAVE AT LEAST FOUR HOURS UNTIL THEIR GAME/PRACTICE BEGINS:

•Bagel with peanut butter, low-fat yogurt, and fruit •Deli roast beef and Swiss cheese wrap •Pancakes or waffles with fruit and low-fat milk •Yogurt parfait with layers of cereal and fruit •Pasta with lean meat or fish and veggies •Spaghetti with meatballs or meat sauce •Beef jerky, crackers, and dried or fresh fruit slices In the meantime, be safe, have fun, drink water, and have a Happy Fourth of July!

John Adams believed that the Fourth of July should become a religious holiday – a day when we remembered God’s hand in deliverance and a day of religious activities when we committed ourselves to Him in “solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.” Such was the spirit of the American Revolution as seen through the eyes of those who led it. He wrote to his wife Abigail on July 3 about the resolution of independence: "The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more." Mr. Adams was only off by two days… and by a mile in his desire for a religious holiday! Today the Fourth of July is marked with barbecues, picnics, and fireworks. Sodas, hot dogs, chips, and other calorie-laden foods abound which can be pitfalls for young athletes. The occasional “cheat” day is fine, but when young athletes find themselves chowing down on junk food regularly, it will eventually affect their performance on the court or the field. The overall goal of eating leading up to a competitive season is to maximize the fuel and fluid available to the body, in order to support peak athletic performance. Food and beverage choices should not cause distress, so it’s important athletes opt for meals consisting of familiar, well-tolerated items before practices or events. In other words, the day of competition is not the time to experiment with new foods which make summer the perfect time to work on re-establishing good eating habits.

VolleyballAlthough we are officially on summer vacation, our girls are hard at work going to clinics every week as well as camps all over the state! These girls and families work very hard year around! We still have a few spots available if you missed tryouts. We would love for you to join our FEAST
