After reading aloud as a family for over 10 years, we’ve read a lot of books. I

asked each of my kids to send me the top 10 read alouds from a list I sent them.

We probably read over 100 books while the kids were at home.

I’ll start with my list – “Mom’s List”

(in no particular order)

1. Cat of Bubastes

2. Adventures of Robin Hood

3. Treasures of the Snow

4. Little Women

5. Johnny Tremain

6. Little Britches series

7. The Witch of Blackbird Pond

8. The Story of Liberty

9. Where the Red Fern Grows

10. Taming of the Shrew

There are so many good books we’ve read aloud, it is very hard to just choose 10.

Fair Warning . . .

Only one of my kids picked only 10. The others picked many books.

What does that say about my kids following directions???

Or, about how much they liked books???

Starting with My Youngest, Hunter

Before I list Hunter’s (19 yo) favorite read alouds, let me share what he said when

I asked him for his top 10.

In all seriousness, he looked at me and asked, “what books did we read”?

Really!?!?

I looked at him and asked, “don’t you remember any books we read aloud”?

He said, “Jotham’s Journey“. We laughed because we read that book 2 or 3 times

over several Christmases.

Once he looked at our list of books, here’s Hunter’s top 10 (or top dozen). Some

of these surprised me…

1. Courage of Sarah Noble

2. The Sign of the Beaver

3. Paddle to the Sea (water related)

4. Freedom Train – I knew he’d put this on the list

5. The Hiding Place

6. Swiss Family Robinson – (water related)…of course it’s on Hunter’s list

7. Little Britches series, including Man of the Family & The Home Ranch

8. A Christmas Carol

9. Treasure Island (water related)

10. The Hobbit – don’t all boys like this one?

11. Adventures of Tom Sawyer

12. Beowulf

Then Gentry, My Reader

Gentry (22 year old) was & still is my biggest reader. She liked so many books, I’m

surprised she narrowed it down.

1. Heidi

2. With Lee in Virginia

3. Johnny Tremain

4. Little Britches series – do you see a

pattern here?

5. The Lion, The Witch, & The

Wardrobe

6. Where the Red Fern Grows

7. God’s Smuggler

8. The Hiding Place

9. Jotham’s Journey

10. The Witch of Blackbird Pond

Finally Ashley, My Oldest

Ashley (24 yo) is now married and says she balked about reading. Now she is very

thankful. Here’s her list.

1. Sign of the Beaver

2. Toliver’s Secret

3. Walk the World’s Rim

4. Little Women

5. Johnny Tremain

6. Little Britches series

7. For the Temple

8. Eagle of the Ninth (now titled The Eagle)

9. Where the Red Fern Grows – another pattern

10. God’s Smuggler

11. The Hiding Place

Page 9: Kerry S. Beck, for Families - How to Homeschool My Childhowtohomeschoolmychild.com/pdf/cm-10-read-alouds.pdfChristian Homeschooling If you want specific resources that Kerry recommends

12. Jotham’s Journey – and yet another family fav

13. Little House on the Prairie

14. Carry A Big Stick

In looking at these lists, I noticed Little Britches on all our lists. Steve read this

series for several years in the evening. Great Books!

A few others that made most of our lists included Where The Red Fern Grows,

Jotham’s Journey, The Hiding Place and Johnny Tremain.

Christian Leadership Education Series

http://HowToHomeschoolMyChild.com/leaders

Raising Leaders, Not Followers, Book 1

Most homeschoolers continue to offer their children the same type of

education they received; they just do it at home. Parents prepare their

children in a public school-grade level fashion for a future job, teaching them

only “what to think”. Our founding fathers received something different – a

leadership education through mentoring. Leadership education trains our

children “how to think” in a variety of situations.

Kerry Beck discuss three types of educational models, how to move from

“what to think” to “how to think” in your homeschool and practical ways to

implement a Biblical Leadership Education from young kids to young adults.

Teach Your Children “How to Think” with Mentoring, Book 2

Go beyond the early years of training leaders and learn how to provide self-

directed study for your own children. Mentoring has been the successful

model to train statesmen, entrepreneurs and community leaders. Discover

clues to becoming a successful mentor to your children and to offer your

children opportunities to study their own interests.

Don’t be fooled by the conveyor-belt model! We all learn more when we

are self-motivated to study. Use mentoring this coming year to encourage your

own children to be self-motivated in their studies.

Hop Off the Conveyor Belt: Tips & Stories, Book 3

Christmas Celebrations: Advent, Christmas & Epiphany

Keep Christ the center of your holiday celebrations as you learn Biblical

ways to celebrate 3 special times of year.

A Father’s Stew: Biblical Integration of Family, Work, Ministry,

by Stephen Beck

In an age where fathers are separated from their families for most of the

day, how can we fulfill the biblical mandate to train our children when "you sit

in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you

rise up"" (Deuteronomy 6)? Given our current culture, is it possible to

integrate family, work and ministry in a biblical manner?

What is God's provision for raising godly children & what are our

responsibilities? Discover God's vision for fathers as we are challenged from

the Scripture to balance the areas of family, work and ministry and to blend

these three ingredients to form a godly stew, a sweet smelling aroma to God.
