7 Steps to Homeschooling Now

A Quickstart Guide

One of the most rewarding choices you will ever

make is the commitment to homeschool your child.

Homeschool programs and curriculum can be

overwhelming. Below you will find a 7-step quick start

guide to getting started with homeschooling.

Step One: Commit to develop a love of

learning in your child

Commit to helping your child develop a love to learn

continuously. To develop a love for learning, it is

important to do the following:

Be aware and take advantage of teachable

moments. For example, as you prepare dinner invite

your child or children to assist you. As they help prep

with you, they will get hands-on lessons in math and

critical thinking through measuring ingredients and

preparing the right amount for the number of

people being served.

Set a schedule, which will create consistency, and

make homeschooling easy to manage.

Step Two: Know your state homeschool law

Some states have detailed guidelines and

concrete standards, in other states parents are not

required to do much to comply. Knowing what your

state requires will help you decide whether you will

homeschool independently or seek an accredited

program.

Step Three: Know your child

Answer the following questions about your child to

determine the best learning approach:

Does your child love to get dirty and explore the world around him?

Is he/she one who loves to sit down and listen as you read a story?

Is he/she an analytical thinker, who tends to question what is happening around him?

Is he/she one who can connect events and experiences to lessons in life?

Does he/she seem to thrive when able to create with his hands?

Does he/she naturally “get it” the first time she hears it?

A student who is a hands-on learner will not be content to sit and fill out worksheets or listen to you explain concepts.

A student who has strong auditory skills will thrive within a curriculum that uses interesting stories to teach about history, science or literature.

A student who needs to hear or try something several times before he/she can grasp it will need a mastery curriculum with a lot of repetition and review.

A student who seems to “get it” right away will soar when provided with a curriculum that provides ample opportunity for critical thinking.

Knowing your child’s academic level is also critical to a successful program.

Testing your child to determine his or her actual academic level will ensure that your program will be a successful one.

Step Four: Examine Yourself

Know what kind of teaching role you want to take

Do you enjoy making a mess while you dig into learning with projects and experiments?

Do you prefer an orderly home with a set schedule where you can plan experiments and ensure that you have just the right materials before you begin?

Are you a creative individual who loves to find new ways to explore?

Can take someone else’s creative ideas and tailor them to your kids?

Do you need structure? Do you prefer to “wing it” and see where the day

takes you?

Answering these questions will help you discover the kind of curriculum program you need.

If you are super creative, consider a program that allows room for creativity.

If you prefer to take an idea and make it better, you may need a program that is already laid out for you. Provide your own time for enrichment.

Avoid comparing your homeschool program to others. Each of them will be different. Know your passions. Know your abilities and be willing to accept your strengths and your weaknesses. That is where a successful program begins.

Step Five: Get Organized for Homeschooling

Give homeschool things a place to live.

Set aside a specific area in your home for

homeschooling. While this does not mean all learning

and teaching must take place in this area or space, it

does mean each child will have their own area to store

books and supplies. For example, your homeschool space

can be a box, a cabinet in the kitchen, space next to the

dining room table, or a container that slides under the

bed.

Know that they do not always do homeschooling at

their desk. Throughout the year, they may spread out in

the dining room, lay on the rug in the living room,

snuggle up in their bed, or go outside on the porch to

read. Establish a specific area to keep homeschool

materials before you begin homeschooling so that the

kids will develop a habit of putting their homeschool

materials away every day.

Step Six: Connect with other homeschoolers

Get involved with other homeschool families to share ideas and for support. It is important to have a variety of supplemental activities and events to enrich your child/children homeschool experience.

You can do this by working together with other families on specialty courses, field trips, Science labs, Writing and Research, Public Speaking, Arts & Crafts, Book Clubs, Sports teams, life skills, and extracurricular courses. Building relationships with other homeschoolers will provide encouragement and new friendships for your child.

Step Seven: Have fun and explore

When a child wants to know something, they are

ready to learn. Their interest motivates them to take the

time to read, to listen, to study, and to explore.

Take time to find out what your child interest are and

explore them!

If your curriculum introduces the medieval history, and your child is enthralled, take the time to pursue it further.

If you know your child has a passion for the study of electricity, give him the tools to dig deeper.

If you have a budding writer who can’t wait to publish her own book, provide the time to develop her writing skills.

If your child loves photography, let him pick up a camera, enroll him in a class, or just provide ample time for him to get out and start shooting.

Whether you cover it with a formal curriculum or simply

supplement your core, your homeschooler will be a

much more enthusiastic learner and will more than likely

retain much more when he or she is interested.
