Susannah sighed asshe draped her head-covering over her longraven hair. Picking up anempty clay urn, she setout on the long, hot,dusty walk to fetch water

from the communal wellnear Sychar, theSamaritan village whereshe lived.

She approached the

well warily, because theresat a stranger—a Jew,

judging by appearance.She was astonished whenthe man asked her for a

drink of water, becausethe Jews’ religious

customs forbade themany interaction with theSamaritans, whom they

considered “unclean.”

“You’re a Jew and I’m a Samaritan!” she

exclaimed. “Why do you

ask me for a drink?” “If you knew who I

was,” the stranger

replied, “you would be

the one asking for water.” Susannah was

mystified. How could thisman get water out of thewell? He had nothing topull it out with.

The stranger

answered with wordsthat she would laterrepeat until they wereimprinted upon hermemory —words that

millions after her woulddraw hope from.

“Everyone who drinks

water from this well willget thirsty again. But

anyone who drinks thewater I give will never bethirsty again. The water Igive comes from thefountain of eternal life.”

Susana estaba

entonces han infundidoesperanza a millonesde personas.

-Todo aquel que bebade este pozo volverá a

tener sed. En cambio, elque beba del agua que Yole daré jamás volverá atener sed. El agua que Yodoy proviene de la fuentede la vida eterna.

Susannah wasastonished. “You’re a

prophet, I see,” she began.

“You might be able to

settle a certain disputethen. My people havealways worshiped onMount Gerizim, but youJews say that Jerusalem is

the only place to worship.”The fact that a Jewishruler had destroyed theSamaritans’ temple on

their holy mountain 200years earlier wentunspoken, but clearly itwas on her mind.

“Believe me,” the

stranger replied, “the time

is coming when you won’t

worship the Father eitheron this mountain or inJerusalem. God is a Spirit,and those who worshipGod must worship Him in

spirit and truth.” She marveled at this

answer. God —a Spiritwho she could worshipanywhere? Her race,

religion, gender,background, age, —could

The stranger gazed intoher eyes, and her heartbeat faster. “I am that

one!”

Her eyes widened andher thoughts raced. “I

must tell my friends andfamily! Wait here for

me!” Susannah rushed

back to Sychar, her still-empty urn forgotten.The midday heat had

passed, and peoplewere milling around themarket square. Sheexcitedly told all thoseshe could about the

man she had met andtheir conversation. “He

must be the Christ!” she

exclaimed.Soon Susannah

returned to the well atthe head of a smallcrowd. The stranger wasstill there, nowaccompanied by severalmen, and from themshe learned that thestranger’s name was Jesus.

He did not stay astranger, because thepeople were captivated

by what He told them.Some of them invitedHim and His companionsto stay with them, soJesus spent two days in

Sychar, explaining theHoly Scriptures.Some days later,

Susannah made her wayback through town with afull water pot. Her loadwas heavy, but her stepswere light. She stillneeded to fetch waterdaily, but her inneremptiness was gone.

Susannah smiled asshe went on her way. She

was not the only one whohad found the living water!

In the city ofCapernaum in Israel,there lived a Romancenturion responsiblefor a garrison of ahundred soldiers. He andhis men had kept watchon Jesus’ activities ever

since He began His workin the city, for it was theirduty to ensure that theGalilean was not doing orsaying anything to incite

a rebellion against Rome.After hearing Jesus

preach, however, thecenturion had come torespect Him, realizing

that the kingdom Heproclaimed was hardlya threat to Rome, whichin spite of all its powerand greatness could

stand to benefit fromHis teachings on love.

Vivía en Capernaum,ciudad de Israel, uncenturión romano que teníaa su cargo una guarnición decien hombres. Él y sushombres habían vigilado lasactividades de Jesús desdeel comienzo de Su ministerio

One day, thecenturion’s beloved

servant became sickwith palsy, and the

centurion immediatelythought of all Jesus haddone for the sick. Could

Jesus heal my

servant? he wondered.

Nonetheless, howcould he, being aRoman, ask a Jew forhelp in a day whenmost Jews hated the

armies of Caesar? WouldJesus be willing to reachbeyond His own Jewishrace, even to helpsomeone with whomthe Jews were at odds?

Un día al enfermar susiervo más querido de unagrave parálisis, el centuriónenseguida pensó en todo lo

que Jesús había hecho por losenfermos. —Me pregunto sino podría curar a mi siervo.

“Surely I can call some

of the Jewish elders,” the

centurion reasoned,“respected men with

whom I’ve had dealings,and they can talk to Jesusfor me.”

These Jewish elders,who were indebted to the

centurion for a favor hehad shown to theirpeople, told Jesus of thecenturion’s request for

the healing of his servant.

“This man is truly worthyof Your help,” they said.

“He loves our nation and

has even personallyfinanced the building ofour synagogue.”

Jesus agreed to go, butwhen He was not far fromthe centurion’s house, the

centurion sent a messagevoicing his respect for the

power Jesus had shownthrough the manymiracles He hadperformed. “Lord, do not

trouble Yourself, for I am

not worthy to have Youcome under my roof,” he

and my servant will behealed. For I am a man inauthority with soldiers

under my command, and Isay to one, ‘Go,’ and he

goes, and to another,‘Come,’ and he comes.

And if I tell my servant,

‘Do this,’ then he does it.” When Jesus heardthese words, He declaredto those who followedHim, “I have not found

such great faith, no, notin all Israel!” Then Jesus,pleased with thecenturion’s faith, said,

“Go! It will be done just as you believed it would.”

The Bible tells us thatat the very same momentthat Jesus commendedthe centurion for his greatfaith, his servant was

healed. Imagine himfinding his servantoverjoyed and completelyhealed, and telling himthat he can thank God

through Jesus of Nazarethwho did the miracle!

change not!” (Malachi

believe, all things are

possible to him thatbelieves!”(Mark 9:23)

Zacchaeus, the manin our story, was quitean infamous character,

especially whencontrasted with themany devoutly religiousfigures who walked thestreets of Jericho, “the

city of priests.” He was the wealthy

head of a large officeof government taxcollectors, and to theJews, tax collectors

were the absolutelowest of the low.Well known for beingcheaters, extortionists,and robbers of the poor,

these men were alsoconsidered as traitorsto their brethren, since,though they themselveswere Jews, they workedfor the much-hatedgovernment of Rome.

Zaqueo era un sujetode muy mala fama,especialmente si se le

Un día, sin embargo,ocurrió algo que cambiótodo eso en la vida deZaqueo. Ya había oídohablar de Jesús y de los

muchos milagros que hacía,pero lo que más le intrigabaera el hecho de que Jesústenía fama de ser amigo derecaudadores de impuestosy pecadores. ¡Es más, unode los mismos discípulos deJesús, Mateo, había sidocobrador de impuestos enNazaret!

“¿Se atrevería Jesús a ser

amigo mío?”, se

preguntaba. No teníaamigos y últimamenteempezaba ya a sentirsebastante insatisfecho.

Zacchaeus was a manwith governmentalauthority to bleed fromthe people as much

tribute as possible, andanything he could gougefrom them above thatwent straight into hisown pocket.

But one daysomething happenedthat completely changedall this for Zacchaeus.He had already heardall about Jesus and the

many miracles whichHe’d performed, yet

even more fascinatingwas the fact that Jesuswas known to be a

friend of tax collectorsand sinners. In fact, oneof Jesus’ Own disciples,

Matthew, had one timebeen a tax collector!

“Would Jesus be my

friend too?” Zacchaeuswondered. He had noreal friends and morerecently he’d begun to

feel quite dissatisfied.

Un día Jesús pasaba por

Jericó. Cuando Zaqueo seenteró de que estaba en suciudad, cerró la oficina y sefue corriendo a verle con suspropios ojos. Una enorme

multitud de gente sedesplazaba lentamente por elcamino rodeando a Jesús, ycomo el pobre Zaqueo eratan bajito, no podía ver nada.

De repente descubrió quemás adelante en el camino, acierta distancia del gentío, sealzaba un enorme árbolsicómoro. A lo mejor si seencaramaba en el árbol,

cuando Jesús pasase por allí,podría verle. Sin importarle,pues, lo que la gente pudierapensar de él, Zaqueo echó acorrer dejando atrás a la

multitud y trepó al árbolcomo una ardilla.

Zacchaeus hadbegun to realize that ittook much more thanwealth to bring true

satisfaction. After all,he had everythingmoney could buy, butsomething was missing.

Then one day Jesus

passed through Jericho.When Zacchaeus heardthat He was in town, heclosed up his office, andhurried off to see forhimself. A large crowdwith Jesus in theirmidst, was alreadymoving slowly downthe road, but poorZacchaeus was so short

he couldn’t see a thing.Quickly he spotted a

large sycamore tree upahead of the crowd. AsJesus passed by, maybe

he could see him fromthat tree. Completelyforgetting about whatpeople would think ofhim, Zacchaeus ran past

the crowd and scurriedup into the tree.

When Jesus reachedthe tree where Zacchaeuswas, all of a sudden Heturned and looked up.

Drawing near and lookingstraight up at Zacchaeus,Jesus called, “Zacchaeus,hurry and come down. Imust stay at your house

today!” “Wha … what did He

say?” Zacchaeus wasshocked! “He called me

by my name! He wants

to stay at my house?”

Cuando Jesús llegóhasta el árbol donde sehallaba Zaqueo, se dio lavuelta y miró hacia arriba

como buscando algo.Acercándose a Zaqueo, lemiró fijamente y le dijo,“¡Zaqueo, date prisa,

As Zacchaeus sliddown from the tree, itwas hard to believe thatthere hadn’t been some

sort of mistake. Howcould Jesus have knownhis name? But as soon ashe realized Jesus wasserious, he answered,

“Why, this is an honor!Please do come to myhouse! You’re so very welcome!” And

Zacchaeus joyfully

escorted Jesus to hishome.In that one moving

meeting with Jesus,Zacchaeus had found theanswer! Now wealth andpossessions were notimportant. Excitedly,Zacchaeus declared,“Jesus, right here and

now I want You to know

that I’ve made up my

mind! I am going to giveto the poor one half ofall that I own! And tomake amends for those

whom I have cheated ortaken advantage of, I

posesiones no teníanimportancia.Entusiasmado, Zaqueodeclaró, “¡Jesús, quiero

que sepas que en este

mismo instante acabo detomar una decisión! ¡Voya dar a los pobres la mitadde mis bienes! Y paracompensar a todos los que

What an amazing

commitment,considering that thatsum must have beenvery large!

This was the start of

a new life forZacchaeus! No longerwould he be indifferentto the people and theWorld around him.

Now, he was going totake a personal interestin helping the needy.

Zacchaeus foundthat giving, instead ofbeing painful, broughthappiness andsatisfaction! He waslearning the truth ofJesus’ Words: “Give

and it will be given

you.” (Luke 6:38)

want their religionback. The crookedmerchants who havebeen out-cheatedwant their moneyback. It seemseveryone wantsrevenge. Jesus wasdifferent.

Caiaphas wanted us toarrest Jesus in the deadof night because he wasafraid there would be a

riot if the commonpeople were around tosee it. Jesus had donemany miracles, and mostpeople loved Him. In fact,

the crowd had called forHim to be their king uponHis entry into the city justa couple of days before.

The idea was to find

Jesus in the garden whereHe went to pray, take Himby surprise, and arrestHim before He couldescape. But when we gotthere, it was like He knewwe were coming for Himand was waiting. JudasIscariot did what he'dbeen paid to do andpointed out Jesus from

Caifás deseaba que loarrestáramos a altas horasde la noche porque temíaun levantamiento popular

si lo hacíamos a la vista dela gente. Jesús habíaobrado muchos milagros,y la mayoría de la gente loquería. Es más, un par de

días antes había sidoaclamado rey por lamuchedumbre al entrar ala ciudad.

El plan era encontrar a

Jesús en el huerto dondeacostumbraba rezar,tomarlo por sorpresa ydetenerlo antes quepudiera escaparse. Perolas cosas no se dieron así:al llegar, Él nos estabaesperando, como si yasupiera que íbamos aaprehenderlo. JudasIscariote cumplió lo que se

había pactado con él eidentificó a Jesús entreuna docena de hombres.¡Qué forma de traicionar asu maestro: con un beso!

Judas, because beforewe could say or doanything, Jesus asked us,"Who are you lookingfor?“

"Jesus of Nazareth," Ianswered."I am He," Jesus said.

His presence was sooverpowering that all of

us who had come toarrest Him fell to theground.

"Who are you lookingfor?" Jesus asked again.

"Jesus of Nazareth," Irepeated as I struggledto my feet.

"I have told you that Iam the one you arelooking for, so let these

others go," He said,pointing to His disciples.

But one of them—theone they call Peter—didn't want to leave

with His hand. I felt awarm tingle. The painstopped. Jesus' eyeswere full of love. He

didn't say a word, but Iknew then that He wasmy friend, not myenemy.

"Put that sword

away," Jesus said,turning to Peter. "Hewho lives by the swordwill die by the sword.“

I think some of the

guards were as surprisedas I was that Jesus couldhave enough love to healHis enemies. Some mayeven have wondered,like I did, if He really wasthe Son of God. Not thecaptain of the templeguard, though. He neverdoubted his orders. He

jerked Jesus to His feet,

and a moment later theywere all gone.

Alone in the garden, Ithought about themiracle that had just

taken place. My ear wasrestored perfectly whole,

How could the othershave dismissed thatmiracle so quickly? Howcould they have been socallous?

Back home, as Iwashed the caked bloodfrom my face and armsand changed clothes, Icouldn't shake thethought that I had justbeen an accomplice to ahorrendous crime.

I ran to the HighPriest's palace to seewhat would happen to

Jesus, and found theplace filled with people."Where is He?" I askedone of the guards.

"The trial has begun.

Caiaphas is alreadyconvinced that this Jesusfellow is guilty ofblasphemy. He will pass

judgment quickly. Jesus

doesn't have a chance,"the guard answered.

Aunque mi oreja estabacomo siempre, mis ropasensangrentadas eran laprueba de que había

I kept feeling myear. There was no pain,no damage. I ran myfingers over the spot,

but couldn't even feela scar. How could thatbe?

Then that thoughtcame back, even

stronger than before.I'm responsible forthis! I felt like I was theone on trial. He healedme. He showed me

love and mercy. NowHe is surrounded bywolves crying for Hisblood. What have Idone?

I followed as Jesuswas taken to stand trialbefore Pontius Pilate,the Roman governor.Jesus' accusers were abit like we were in the

garden—nearlybowled over everytime He spoke. Theyknew Jesus was noordinary man.

A cada rato me tocaba laoreja. No sentía dolor, nohabía ningún daño. Mepasaba los dedos por donde

me habían cortado y nisiquiera notaba una cicatriz.¿Cómo era posible?

Entonces me asaltónuevamente aquel

pensamiento, aún másfuerte que antes. «¡Tengo laculpa de lo que estásucediendo!» Me invadió lasensación de que era yo el

que estaba en el banquillode los acusados. «Me sanó.Me manifestó amor ymisericordia. Y ahora estáacorralado por esos lobossedientos de sangre. ¿Quéhe hecho?»

Seguí a la chusma cuandolo llevaron para ser juzgadopor Poncio Pilato, elgobernador romano. Sus

acusadores daban laimpresión de estar bajo elmismo efecto que nosotrosen el huerto: cada vez queJesús hablaba, casi se caían

"I find no fault in Himat all," Pilate declaredafter his interrogation.But when he saw that

the crowd had beenincitedby the priests todemand Jesus' executionand was about to riot,

he called for a basin ofwater and washed hishands, saying, "I aminnocent of the blood ofthis just Man. If you

want Him crucified,you see to it!“

Then Pilate handedJesus over to becrucified, and the wholegarrison of Romansoldiers gatheredaround Jesus. Theydressed Him in a scarletrobe and put a crown ofthorns on His head. Theyspit on Him and mockedHim. "Hail, King of theJews!" Then they put Hisown clothes back onHim and led Him away

to be crucified.

—No me parece quehaya cometido delitoalguno —declaró Pilatodespués de su

se lo llevaron paracrucificarlo.

I was pushed along bythe crowd as it surgedthrough the narrowstreets of Jerusalem until

we came to the hill calledGolgotha, just outside ofthe city. By the time Ipushed my way to thefront of the crowd, the

soldiers had alreadynailed Jesus to a cross andhoisted Him up to die likea common criminal. Hisface and body were

splattered with blood, likemine had been in thegarden.

In my mind I traveledback several months, towhen I had heard Himtell a crowd, "I have

come to seek and savethe lost.“ Even though I

was sure He wouldn'tbe able to hear me overthe noise of the crowd

that had gathered towatch Him die, I toldHim, "I am lost, Jesus.Forgive me for what Idid!“

Then He lookedstraight at me with thesame love in His eyesthat I had seen in thegarden. I knew I was

forgiven. It had been amiracle when He healedmy ear, but an evengreater miracle whenHe healed my heart.

Now I know what Imust do. I must findsome way to serve mynew Master out of loveand gratitude.

Recordé una ocasión,varios meses antes, enque lo había escuchadodecir a la multitud: «He

venido a buscar y salvar alos perdidos». Aunqueestaba seguro de que nome escucharía con todoel ruido del gentío

reunido para presenciarSu muerte, exclamé:«Estoy perdido, Jesús.¡Perdóname por lo quehice!»

En ese momento medirigió la misma miradaradiante de amor quehabía visto en el huerto.Sabía que me había

perdonado. Ya había sidoun milagro que me sanarala oreja; pero más lo fueque me curara el corazón.

Ahora sé lo que debohacer. Es imperioso queencuentre una forma deservir a mi nuevoMaestro por amor ygratitud.
