SWIMMING

A good start to the swimming lessons for the year 3/4‟s despite the coolish conditions. It certainly

does help when clothing is clearly labelled and when the children do attend with all the required

gear. Just a small amount of clothing has been unclaimed!

SCIENCE WEEK

This week some children will have the opportunity to engage in

activities related to the theme of Drones, Droids and Robots. We

thank Ms Walmsley for actioning the activities happening today,

tomorrow and Friday lunchtime. Congratulations also to Shae S and

Annabelle D, both from C4 who have had their robots displayed at the

Perth Science festival over the last weekend. Awesome work girls!

ONE BIG VOICE

A sensational effort by the Year 3 and 4 children who attended the One Big Voice concert last

Friday evening. They were absolutely brilliant! A real testament to the quality of the singers at our

school. A big thank you to Mrs Clack and Ms Speelman for their continued hard work with the

children.

OPEN NIGHT

A reminder that our annual Open Night is next Wednesday 24th August. Classes will be open from

6:00pm till 7:00pm. The evening will kick off with a performance by the choir at 5.30pm. Please

remember that it is a time for your child to tell you about the work they‟re doing and for you to

see that sensational work. Although in attendance, teachers will not be available to talk with

individual parents about their children.

JUNIOR FACTION CARNIVAL

Don‟t forget that the Junior Carnival will be held a fortnight today, 30th August. It‟s always a

great day (assuming the weather is kind) and gives us all an insight into the “sports stars of the

future”. Hope to see you all there!

ASSEMBLY

Our next assembly is scheduled for Friday 26th August and will be hosted by B3.

Where will you be in 2017?

With changes to staffing procedures, it has become increasingly important for schools to have

accurate information about projected student enrolments as well as contact information. We thank

all families that have completed and returned the forms indicating their intentions for next year

and confirmed contact information. If you haven‟t done so already, please send details to the

school office. Anyone considering a move to a new Primary School or enrolling in Year 7 for next

year should have made plans and contacted the school to ensure they are planning staffing and

rooms for your child‟s arrival. Kindy applications have officially closed and planning is underway to

allocate places. Please advise the school if your circumstances change between now and the start

of the school year in February 2017.

Mobile Phones at School – Parents please help

We are getting far too many mobile phones being brought to school.

A mobile phone should only be brought to school by a student if that student

needs to contact a parent after school.

Otherwise we ask that students do not bring mobile phones to school.

OPEN NIGHT 2016

MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT

At the Hillarys Primary Open Night, which is on Wednesday 24th August, we will be showcasing all

the wonderful things that are happening musically within our school.

The junior and the senior choirs will be performing, as well as the 2 ukulele groups. We will also be

having the SIM flute and guitar students performing for us and perhaps even some other musical

entertainment.

It‟s also a great opportunity for the Senior Choir to have a final Dress Rehearsal before the big

performance at the Crown Theatre the following night on the 25th.

Come to the undercover area at 5.30 for about a half an hour of brilliant Hillarys musical talent!

Look forward to seeing you all there!

SENSEI'S NEWS

Host a Japanese Student

Once again students from Gunma Kokusai Academy in Japan will visit us this

October and we are looking for families to host a student. A detailed letter has

come home with students in Year Five and Six.

Students Arriving too Early for School

We have a number of students choosing to arrive very early at school.

Parents are advised that unless there are special circumstances, students should aim to arrive

between 8.30 and 8.45. (unless involved in a before-school program)

Please help us by not letting your child/ren leave too early for school.

Last Friday a very enthusiastic group of 9 athletes from year 4-6

competed in this year‟s State Schools Cross Country competition at

McGillvray Oval, Mt Claremont. All races had in excess of 250

competitors. Our runners performed very well with most placing in

the top third of their races. Of special mention is Amelie E from A1

Good luck Amelie!

Junior Athletics Carnival – Hillarys Primary School Oval

Students from PP-Year 2 will be participating in the Junior Faction Carnival on 30 August between

later this week. Mrs Armstrong will require assistance erecting tents on the morning so please

return the slip from the information note if you are able to help. Please mark this date in your

diary as the students look forward to sharing the morning with family members and friends.

Thursday 8th September – Athletics Carnival

Students from Year 3- 6 have been busy preparing for the up-coming athletics carnivals during PE

lessons and Friday Sport sessions. They have been competing in trials at Friday Sport sessions to

decide which children will be selected to represent their faction in the various individual field

events. Over the next 2 weeks selections will be completed and further information will come home

to all students regarding the details of both days. Once again Mrs Armstrong will require

assistance erecting tents on the Thursday morning so please fill in the slip from the information

note once received if you are able to help. Many thanks and we look forward to seeing many family

members and friends cheering on the day.

KIDS MATTER

Guidelines for helping children deal with frightening events and media coverage:

The extensive media coverage of violence, conflict, terror etc in the international

community and her in Australia, means that many children will be aware of world events

and the possibility of violence close to home.

Hearing about these events can be very disturbing and distressing for children. Children

cannot easily understand time and place. They may experience events as concrete and local

and profoundly personal and emotional and wonder if harm would happen to them.

Children need reassurance that they are safe and secure, as well as help in making sense of

complex events, at a level they can understand.

Signs that children are feeling distressed:

Changes in play

Regressive behaviour

Nightmares

Anxiety about sleeping alone

Wanting to stay close to a parent, becoming more clingy

Questions about death and dying

What adults can do:

Monitor media exposure

Listen to how children are feeling and thinking

Reassure children

Be aware of how you talk in front of children

Pay attention to your own reactions

Be alert to stereotypes

Leave children with a feeling of security but also hope

This week we celebrate National Science Week- “Drones, Droids and Robots.”

We have kicked it off with a bang! Or maybe a buzz… of drones, thanks to some year

6 students who have been showing us how to use them!

Students are also learning about robots such as ASIMO and building some

model robots including a spider and a space cleaning robot!

In STEM Club after school we used some smartphone

microscopes on the iPads to look at our skin, hair and lots

of other cool things!

The Science Room is open at lunchtime Tuesday, Wednesday and

Friday this week for fun activities for students to try, including

using Augmented Reality with iPads and iScience books.

KINDY GARDEN NEWS

Mr Coufos and his earthlings have continued to visit Kindy in Term Three. The children have been

planting flowers so that we will have a lovely Spring display. Our beetroot, onions and snow peas are

nearly ready to harvest. The “earthlings” spoke to the children about recycling and reusing – and

they practise what they preach!!
