The work undertaken involved the older children explaining to the K’s about plants (flowers, leaves and roots) and then assisting in planting vincas in the garden wall. The Kindy kids and the 6’s thoroughly enjoyed their interactions. The good news is that this program of peer help will continue! Could this be the start of Coufos’ Kitchen and his band of merry helpers? SCHOOL BOARD There are a number of parent representatives that will be ending their terms of membership and I will shortly be calling for nominations to the Board. Two (2) positions will be called for. If you think you may have the necessary skills and feel capable of representing the school on the Board, please complete the nomination form when it becomes available in a few weeks. SCHOOL PREFECTS AND SPORTS CAPTAINS Congratulations to this semester’s Prefects and Sports Captains. I have no doubt they will conduct their duties with excellence. SCHOOL PHOTO DAY IS COMING! Our school photo day is coming! Approximately two weeks prior to the photo day every student will receive a Kapture Photography order envelope to bring home. The recommended method of ordering your photos is online through Kapture’s website as your payment is secure and can be easily verified at any time. Alternatively you can pay by cash and return the provided envelope to the school on the photography day. If you place your order online please DO NOT return your envelope to school.

Any parent who forgets or is unable to supply their envelope on the photo day will have five (5) days to complete an order online. Late payment envelopes cannot be accepted by the school office or by Kapture.

You also have the option to order a sibling photo package online, however please be aware there may be a limited number of sibling orders that can be placed due to time constraints on photo day. We suggest you place your online sibling order as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Please note sibling orders close @ midday Friday 1 April 2016

Kapture offer a money back guarantee for any parent who is not fully satisfied with their photo package. Should you have any queries before or after photo day, please direct them to the Kapture office on 9240 1714 or email [email protected].

All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records AS WELL as included in their class group photo available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot –please contact the school

office.

When a student is absent from school It is a requirement of the Department of Education that any student who is absent from school needs a note, email or telephone call to provide an explanation of why the student was away. Parents are asked to provide a note, email or phone call covering an absence immediately the student returns to school or in the event of a pre-planned absence, before being away. Parents can ring the school on 93076365, email [email protected] or through Tiqbiz.

School App- Tiqbiz We’re pleased to inform you that we have just launched a school app. The school will be using the app to send out the school newsletter, general updates, reminders, events and much, much more! The app is called tiqbiz and is available on iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android Phone, Android Tablet and Windows phone devices. If you don’t have a mobile device, there is also an app available for computer, both Mac and PC. We kindly ask that you download tiqbiz to one of these devices, register a free account then find and tick the school. When you are ticking the school boxes, please make sure you tick on “Whole School” and the specific grades/years that apply to your family. You’ll receive all the information with a push notification – much like a text message directly to your device. Any last minute changes or reminders, we’ll be able to reach you to keep you completely informed and up-to-date. The app has some great features that will allow us to get information through easily and quickly, you’ll be reminded about important calendar dates 24 hours before, and everything we post can be translated into one of 91 languages! You will also be able to submit student absence via the app now, authorised by your signature, electronically signed straight onto the screen with your finger! 142 people are already connected with Tiqbiz. We hope you will enjoy using this great communication tool.

KIDS MATTER - Teaching children values Values are the internal guides we have for our behaviour. They help us to make choices, and to make judgements about what is right and wrong, good or bad, fair or unfair.

How parents and carers can help

Parents and carers can use a range of strategies to help children learn about social values. The following ideas can help:

• Teach by example Children often learn more from what you do than what you say. • Read and discuss stories that demonstrate positive values Choose children’s stories that reflect the kinds of values you want children to learn. You might ask questions like: How do you think that person feels? Why do you think he/she did that? Was it a good idea? How could he/she have done it better? • Check what children are watching on TV Make sure that the programs children watch and the electronic games they play are suitable for their age and reflect positive values. • Teach children to learn from mistakes. Mistakes provide opportunities for teaching and reinforcing positive values. Support and acknowledge children when they admit mistakes and help them find ways to make up for them. • Help children to think about values Talk with children about the social values and attitudes they encounter in everyday situations and on TV. Teaching children about values supports their social development. It helps them develop the knowledge and skills they need to play a positive role in society. Sustainability in Kindergarten In Week 4, Mr Coufos and a group of senior students worked with Kindergarten students planting flowers for the Kindy wall garden. Over the coming weeks, Mr Coufos and his band of helpers will spend time in Kindergarten, Pre Primary and Years 1 to 3. They will plant flowers, vegetables, shrubs and trees, teach the children about recycling, composting and how to care for the school chickens. It was a great learning experience and the senior students were amazing in the way they worked with the Kindy kids. Thank you Mr Coufos!
