As the best players in the world descend on Melbourne for this year's

competition, world number one Peter Gilchrist—a three-time

world champ—is out to prove himself after coming

second in last year’s Championship.

“I'd like to win this year,” Peter tells Highlights. “I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think I could. If I find some form in this contest, I'll have a good chance.”Gilchrist, who plays for Singapore, started as part of

a billiards group as a young kid.“When I was

12, we had the Teesside Boys League, which was formed in 1973. There were 36 teams around the area at the time, each with six players,” Peter recalls. “On a Saturday or Sunday morning, we were allowed to go into the clubs and play in competitions. By 1992, we had the top five players in the world all coming from within a ten-mile radius.”The group no longer exists and it's becoming increasingly difficult to recruit younger players to the sport.“I tried to replicate the Teesside Boys League when I moved to Singapore to train younger players, but it's fallen by the wayside. Kids aren’t interested in playing billiards. There are some great young players coming in from India though, it is quite popular there.”So what does a world champion depend on the most?“I only have the one cue that I use”, says Peter, “If I lost my cue, it would be like losing an arm. It's a misconception

This historic, prestigious event, first contested in 1870, was last played in Melbourne in 1934 when Australian billiards legend Walter Lindrum defended his title against England’s Joe Davis. Now, 85 years later, the Championship comes to Australia for the second time.

that you can just pick up any cue and play well. You get to know the specific balance and weight of your cue. I’d be a complete novice if I just picked one off the racks and tried to play." Billiards, he says, is all about touch and feel. "If you have a cue that you’re really happy with and you get used to its balance, it makes all the difference.”Peter won't be travelling solo when he plays (and stays) at City Club—there'll be one very special guest in the crowd. “My dad is flying over from England, so there’s a bit of extra pressure. I’m looking forward to spending time with him,” Peter says. “He’ll tell you he is a billiards player. Same as my brother: if he has a few pints, he’ll say that if he continued playing billiards he’d be better than me. It’s all a bit of fun in our family.”He may be ranked number one, but Peter

says there are some serious contenders coming to Melbourne.“My closest competitors this year will be Matthew Bolton, Pankaj Advani, Sourav Kothari and David Causier. There’s probably six or seven players who have a chance,” he says. The World Open and World Billiards Championship finals will be held in the City Club’s world class billiards room.“I’ve been in lots of billiard rooms over the years,” Peter says. “I honestly think RACV’s billiard room is the nicest one I’ve ever been in, it’s fantastic. There’s plenty of space and there’s a separate finals table, it’s perfect.” Here's hoping his surroundings bring Peter luck.Go to billiardschampionship.com

FROM THE VINE Wine Travel Without Moving

If scent and flavour can bring back childhood memories, wine can transport you to distant regions without moving. This is just what happened when I was confronted by wines from an unknown (to me) wine region, made by an unknown winery using never heard-of grape varietals.

It's kind of hard to do a tasting when you need to Google everything and it's a good reminder to stay humble—we know so little. The island in question is Bozcaada off the western coast of Turkey. This former Greek island is an idyllic, less populated tourist destination. Corvus is the island's most respected producer, founded in 2002, however the wine culture dates to ancient times and harbours several native varieties such as Kuntra, Karalahna, and Vasilaki.

The standout in my tasting was a blend of Kuntra and Karalahna under Corvus's Rarum label. A six-year-old blend showing great potential with sturdy but polished tannins, a well-structured palate with savoury fruity edge and good elegant length. The Slowfood Foundation says production of these varieties is declining, threatened by tourism and lack of general interest. So, yes, I've placed an order but it will take time to make its way from their island to ours.

Cheers! Christian Maier, RACV Club and Resorts Sommelier

It's arguably the best known art competition in the country. Now, the stunning finalists in the Archibald Prize 2019 are coming to the Yarra Valley.

Kneeling on the floor, hands clasped, artist Lindy Lee glances downwards, a moment of

contemplation captured by artist Tony Costa. It's a moment that is destined to go down in Australian art history. Costa's meditative portrait (left) was named the winner of the 2019 Archibald Prize earlier this year.

For over 98 years, the coveted and contentious art competition has recognised the work of some of Australia’s most celebrated artists including William Dobell, Brett Whiteley and Del Kathryn Barton. Other years, complete unknowns and even first time artists take out the $100,000 prize. And, really, that's all part of the appeal of the Archibald Prize.

The other aspect of the annual portrait competition that so grabs the public's imagination is the way it gives audiences a glimpse into Australian culture and identity, capturing the faces of politicians, celebrities, sporting heroes, authors and ordinary Australians through the eyes of the artist. Take this year's depiction of the actor David Wenham deep in thought (opposite). The stunning, photo-realistic portrait by artist Tessa Mackay took out the 2019 Packing Room prize, awarded each year by the crew in the Art Gallery of New South Wales packing room, a wonderfully egalitarian aspect to the Archibald that is so quintessentially Australian. The 51 finalist artworks (out of a record 919 entries) travel to the Yarra Valley for an exclusive exhibition at TarraWarra Museum of Arts this spring. Among them are works which portray well known faces including former ballet dancer and director of Queensland Ballet Li Cunxin by Jun Chen, Anh Do’s portrait of the artist George Gittoes, Vincent Namatjira’s tribute to his friend and fellow artist Tony Albert and media commentator Annabel Crabb by Jordan Richardson.“We are delighted that Australia’s most loved and eagerly anticipated art award, the Archibald Prize, will return again to TarraWarra Museum of Art in 2019,” says Victoria Lynn, TarraWarra Museum of Art Director. “The local community will also have the chance to create their own masterpiece through Not the Archies, a community project presented by Yarra Ranges Council which gives residents the chance to have their artwork displayed.” >>

>> Established as a bequest by Jules Francois Archibald, founding editor of The Bulletin magazine, the prize was intended to foster portraiture and support local artists while memorialising great Australians. According to his Will, Jules Francois thought that the subject ought to be "some man or woman distinguished in art, letters, science or politics, painted by any artist resident in Australasia". Nearly a century on, Mr. Archibald's wish has become iconic as an annual gift to the nation's artistic legacy.

HISTORY ON HIGHIt won't surprise you to learn that high tea is a British tradition dating from the 1700s when workers—who in those days were men—would partake in an afternoon meal. Compared to eating regular afternoon tea in a sofa or armchair, the men would take tea on a stool or while standing, putting the 'high' in tea time.

There’s plenty to love about the arrival of spring and the warmer weather. But a change in season

calls for a change in skincare routine. The cooler months can leave skin less than sparkling. Months of heating, hot showers and comfort food takes a toll, dulling our complexions. But it is possible to get that glow back.

“People find through winter that their skin lacks moisture, it can feel dull and we tend to lack motivation to go through a skin care regime,” says Britta

It's known as the season of renewal and as the flowers begin to bloom, it's also time to give your skin new life.

Spring Skin Solutions

WELLBEING

Thompson (pictured), a resident beauty therapist at One Spa Healesville. “We tend to be more sedentary during winter, sitting indoors a lot with heating and it dehydrates the skin.”

To combat the ageing and complexion-dulling effects of winter, look to a combination of topical treatments and an overall approach to general health.

“We try and look at skin as part of an integrated approach to health, so while we're always feeding the skin topically

with products, having a whole food diet rich in vitamins and minerals will help set you up for great skin,” says Britta. “Avoid sugary and processed foods and increase essential fatty acids in the diet to increase lipids and hydrate the skin.”

After completing a diploma of beauty therapy, Britta continued her studies in dermal science, arming her with the knowledge to assess individual skin health and even help treat all kinds of common skin concerns like rosacea, acne and eczema.

“A full skincare regime can seem over-whelming, but a beauty therapist can help tailor a skin care regime to suit your needs, taking many factors into consideration," says Britta.

Lack of sleep and too much stress shows in our complexion, so emotional wellbeing is also important for optimising skin health.

“Never underestimate the power of touch. Something as simple as a facial every 4-6 weeks increases blood flow and circulation, boosts oxygen levels and collagen production,” she adds. “Allow yourself to relax during a treatment to lower stress and cortisol. You’ll glow from the outside and feel good.”

“The biggest struggle for people in reaching their fitness goals is motivation and accountability,” says personal trainer and registered dietician Kasey Jaeger (pictured). She's seen and heard all the excuses. And winter doesn't help things—we tend to turn to comfort food, carbohydrates and sugar fixes. When it's dark and cold outside and you're lacking energy, it’s a lot easier to bundle up and stay in then get up and move.

“Get outside, even in winter. There's lots of benefits to keeping active, especially

They say summer bodies are made in winter, so there's no time like the present to start making positive changes.

Time To Shape Up

FITNESS

in the cooler months,” Kasey says. Easier said than done, so Kasey heads up Better Bods, a program designed to provide a winter reset to give people a head start on spring. Losing weight and shaping up is no secret formula—spoiler alert: eat well and exercise—but having the tools to reach goals is key.

“We give you the chance to engage weekly and keep yourself accountable with one-on-one nutrition appointments with me and access to different workshops every week.”

The focus isn't on the scales—the best outcome is to make sustainable lifestyle changes to take into the future.

“Lots of members have met a gym buddy through the program who keeps them motivated,” Kasey says. “It’s not just about how much weight you lose. There's a points system for attending regular sessions and completing challenges. We reward people for making positive lifestyle changes.”

Remember, long term health doesn't happen overnight, it's a process.

“Learning about diet, exercise, sleep and stress are all important factors in overhauling your health,” said Kasey. “Drink lots of water and eat your veggies. Behaviour around food can make a difference in your health journey. Be conscious of what you eat and shape positive beliefs around your food.”

And put the excuses to the side. “People are juggling work, family and a social life. We look at these factors and say, what can we achieve? What will work? Let’s fit this around your lifestyle and jump the hurdles as they come. Put yourself first and make your health a priority.”

Solo Happy Birthday, Helen

Founding Solo Club member of the Solo Club and long-time RACV Club member (46 years and counting), Helen Lamont, celebrated a birthday milestone recently.

When the monthly Solo Club meet happened to coincide with the big day, Helen's teammates thought it was only fitting to share cake.

“I love Solo because it’s a friendly and social game. We have a chat and aren’t too serious,” Helen told Highlights.

Of course, a lady never reveals her true age—all we can say is that Helen should look forward to receiving a telegram from the Queen next year.

Think you're a dab hand at Solo or hope to become one? Call Member Events to enquire about joining the team

Reciprocal Club Of The MonthRand Club, JohannesburgJust a year after Johannesburg was established, Rand Club was founded in 1887. The third iteration of the clubhouse that stands today was built in 1904, a grand stained glass dome forming the architectural centrepiece of the building until it was destroyed in a 2005 fire. Over the years, the Club has been a political flashpoint in South Africa's history, with leading members arrested in 1896 for treason after plotting a raid against President Kruger. Striking miners descended on the Club in violent clashes in 1913, the scars can still be seen on the facade. It remains an institution taking pride of place in central Johannesburg.
