4-H: The Youth Development Program of MSU Extension

After completing a successful miniature beef pilot program for the 2015-2016 4-H

year, the decision has been made to add the miniature beef project to the Hill County 4-H

curriculum. The miniature beef project does have some requirements that differ from the

other market livestock projects. The purpose and goal of all market projects is to produce a

high quality finished product for the individual that purchases and will consume that

product. However, with the miniature beef project the class requirements are based on hip

height. The hip heights are derived from breed associations like the miniature Hereford

association. When establishing an appropriate hip height for the miniature beef program

there was also a mid-sized beef project class added as well. The miniature beef class has a

hip height of up to 42 inches and the mid-sized beef project will range from plus 42 inches to

48 inches. If a beef does not fit into these class requirements it will be placed in a separate

feeder class and will not qualify to sell in the Hill County 4-H Livestock Sale. This may

seem like a small difference in numbers but this emphasizes the importance of 4-H members

discussing with breeders what types of breeds they are using, sire and dam information, and

what type of progeny they have produced. For example, the breed lowline emphasizes on

correctness and balance of structure not necessarily on a smaller frame size meaning the hip

heights can vary greatly within the breed. This is why a 4-H member that is considering the

project needs to be aware of the full mature height of the sire and dam. The requirements for

the 4-H member to enroll in these projects is as follows, a member will enroll in the market

beef project but they will choose only one of the following a miniature, mid-size, or full

sized beef project. Members that either choose the miniature or mid-sized beef project must

notify the office which class they are taking by no later than the December beef weigh in. If

an individual has difficulty determining which class to enroll, please contact the Hill County

Extension Office for assistance.

4-H: The Youth Development Program of MSU Extension

Positive youth development is a

purposeful, pro-social approach that focuses

on engaging youth in their communities,

schools, organizations, peer groups and

families by recognizing and utilizing youths’

strengths. It supports positive outcomes for

young people by offering opportunities,

encouraging positive relationships with peers

and adults and providing the supports needed

to build on their strengths. Youth who are

engaged in positive youth development

programs like 4-H will develop confidence,

competence, caring and compassion,

connection, and character, also known as

the 5 C’s of positive youth development.

As a 4-H leader and volunteer you play an

important role in helping our youth develop

the 5 C’s. Here are some ways you can

encourage positive youth development:

Encourage youth input: When youth feel

they are being heard and taken seriously

they are more likely to engage in programs

and reap the benefits of that program. As a

4-H leader you can encourage youth to

have a voice by listening, responding

positively, and frequently using ideas

brought to you by your club members.

Provide guidelines and structure: This will allow youth the freedom to

complete tasks in their own way while still

allowing for adult guidance. As you

monitor activities and provide help when

needed ask purposeful questions to

encourage youth to think about practical

issues and to think critically about the

projects they are working on.

Empower youth: To provide an inviting

environment where youth are encouraged

to take on new leadership roles, express

their ideas, and feel support through

success and failures. Give youth a chance

to share their skills and recognize and

praise their work. These environments will

inspire youth to reach their full potential.

Be intentional: To promote and suppor t

positive youth development and the 4-H

mission, you must be intentional in your

work with youth. Encourage a mutually

caring and respectful relationship with

youth, be sure to have your club meetings

and activities well planned and organized,

and understand your role in supporting the

4-H mission – empowering youth to reach

their full potential, working and learning in

partnership with caring adults.

2017 Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar

The 2017 Montana 4-H Citizenship Seminar will take

place from January 15-17, 2017 in Helena at the

Radisson Colonial Hotel. This CIA (citizenship-in-action)

event is designed to educate Montana youth about the

rights and responsibilities of citizenship.

4-H members must be 14 years of age by October 1,

2016 and must NOT have attended the Montana 4-H

Citizeship Seminar previously. Each county may select

two delegates to attend. Registrations are due on

November 1, 2016, and there is an $80 registration fee.

Who can be in 4-H? How Do I Join? Any youth who is 5 years old on October 1st may join a 4-H Cloverbud group. Cloverbuds is a non-competitive educational program for youth ages 5 to 8 years of age and is the ONLY project they can enroll in. Youth age 8 on October 1st may join a regular 4-H club as a full member who can enroll in several different projects. They join a local 4-H Club that meets 6 to 12 times a year and pick at least one project. Projects range from traditional projects such as cooking to swine to bicycle to pocket pets. The 4-H year begins on October 1st each year and enrollment is ongoing throughout the year. Some activities do have enrollment deadline dates to take part in. Call the Hill County Extension Office and they can help you find a club and become a member today.
