Bronson Methodist Hospital
b r o n s o n h e a l t h c a r e g r o u pCSM Group has been continuously integrated into the Bronson Healthcare Group master plan delivery for over 30 years. The Group is a not-for-profit, tertiary healthcare system with a workforce of over 7,100 that serves patients throughout southwest Michigan and northern Indiana.
Operating on the site of Bronson Healthcare Group in occupied spaces, CSM provides facility construction management and planning support for all existing and emerging needs, including the construction of a replacement hospital to facilitate growth of services and the emerging trends in healthcare delivery. Developed on a 14-acre site adjacent to the 100-year-old hospital campus, this complete replacement facility included a medical office pavilion, and an outpatient/inpatient pavilion that all came together around a central garden atrium. The focus was to create a healing environment by bringing the outdoors inside a downtown urban environment.
CSM also adhered to Bronson’s commitment to build a healthier future by helping set high standards for environmental practices. As a result, Bronson Methodist Hospital was named one of Kalamazoo’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified healthcare facilities.

CSM Group was recently selected to serve as the construction manager for the new Health Focused Campus in the heart of downtown Kalamazoo.
In cooperation with Bronson Healthcare Group and Kalamazoo County Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Kalamazoo Valley Community College’s vision for this project is to create a campus focused on wellness and food sustainability. The new campus will be developed on 13.3 acres of unused land donated by Bronson Healthcare Group, where KVCC will expand its curriculum to include training in sustainable food production, distribution, and preparation. The campus will be a catalyst for urban revitalization, community health, and workforce development.

CSM Group was selected as the construction manager for the Allegiance Health Specialty Center, a new 17,400-square-foot, 3-story medical office building designed as a leading specialty medical center treating patients with spine, brain, joint, and muscle conditions.
Housing various services such as radiology, imaging, pain management, rehabilitation, sports, medicine, and neurology, the Center provides flexible space for state-of-the-art equipment and technology needs, as well as ample room for growth.
The specialty center offers convenient, personalized care for patients, including:
• Aquatic therapy pool• Community room (for events/education)• Therapy gym and treatment rooms (including locker room facilities)• Hand clinic• Home medical equipment retail services• Imaging: Open MRI, CT, ultrasound, and general X-ray services• Laboratory• Osteoporosis and balance center
Life EMS Ambulance was the first ambulance service established in Western Michigan, and is among the first in the U.S. to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, the gold standard in the EMS industry.
The construction project consisted of a complete renovation of the existing ambulance dispatch facility offices and training center, and a new 14,000-square-foot addition to the existing building for new office space, restrooms, training area, ambulance dispatch garage, and maintenance area.
The maintenance area includes hydraulic service lifts with a second-story mechanical mezzanine. The addition is constructed from structural pre-cast concrete tilt-up panels. New MEP and fire suppression infrastructure systems and a new roofing system were also added. All new site work and site improvements encompassed the entire property footprint.
All construction and renovation on the existing facility utilized the “live” and in-use T1 phone line and power system. This system was the key component to all of Life EMS incoming emergency calls to the call center and dispatch location. This line fed the temporary relocated location at the old Rose Street Fire Station #4, which was renovated in anticipation of this relocation and construction project by CSM Group.

The Family Health Center of Battle Creek, a fully-integrated healthcare facility serving nearly 30,000 patients in Calhoun County, was faced with a situation requiring an expansion and renovation of their existing facilities to better serve their rapidly growing number of patients.
Utilizing a phased construction approach, CSM Group was able to renovate 26,000 square feet of existing space and build a 28,500-square-foot addition. The facility now includes a new dental clinic, approximately 30 clinical exam rooms, community room, and expanded administrative areas.
In 2013, CSM was hired to construct a 45,400-square-foot Women’s Health Services Center that will provide expanded obstetrics (OB) services to the underserved women of Calhoun County. The facility is home to 18 exam rooms, nurse stations, a medical procedure room, an ultrasound room, counseling offices, and necessary space for office support staff. Services at the facility include certified nurse midwives, group OB visits, nurse care coordinators, and behavioral health counselors.
The design and construction of the project was taken into careful consideration in order to maintain sustainable practices. The site development was balanced to minimize removal of soils, and construction waste was closely managed. Striving to meet LEED requirements, all of the interior finishes were specified to meet the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) requirements for recycled content and low VOCs. To reduce and minimize energy use, a high-efficiency mechanical system was also installed, as well as an automatic lighting control system.

The Family Health Center of Kalamazoo’s dynamic $8.3 million, 70,000-square-foot expansion of its existing facility allowed it to double the number of patients it treats each year.
The new facility triped the exam room space and included a highly efficient medical pod layout, new pharmacy, welcoming patient waiting areas, courtyards, locker rooms, classroom space, and a centrally-located administration space.
In order to begin construction of the new addition, a considerable amount of coordination occurred between CSM Group, the owner, and various project teams. Throughout construction, the existing center remained fully operational, and the work was performed in phases to ensure that the daily clinical services were not interrupted.
