HISTORY SNIPPET

When Electricity Came t o Amargosa Valley

Before 1963 you had kerosene lamps. If you were lucky, you had butane lamps in your house. Water Tanks were built up high and it would give you around 12 pounds of pressure of water in your house. And then we went to big GC diesels. And as you put in more acreage to your ranch, you had to have bigger pumps for irrigation.

Finally it just got to the point where everyone was trying to get power in here. Hank Records went in to Nevada Power Company and asked them if there was any way they could get power in this valley. He found out that even if several of the ranchers and other small towns in the Amargosa Valley joined in, it would still take at least $69,000 to put power onto his property.

In the meantime, Pahrump Valley had formed what they called Pahrump Utility. Mr. Bowman was head of that, and Walt Williams from the Pahrump Ranch, Tim Hafen, Ted Blosser, and Bob Ruud were their board of directors. Hank Records talked to them. And then there was someone who started a co-op up in Sarcobatus Flats and was trying to do something, because White Mountain Power Co-op had formed a co-op and got a loan from the government and were getting their power from Pacific Gas & Electric or one of the northern Nevada electric systems, and they were paying a pretty heavy price for it. They really couldn't make it, with that price on it all the tie. Nothing was happening, and Mr. Hanks just got some men together in the valley here one night, and said, "Let's get our own organization going. And let's try to do something about it."

No one had any power. Hank Records had bought the T&T Ranch from Pacific Coast Borax Company, and they'd had no power in Death Valley. Scotty's Castle in Death Valley. Furnace Creek Inn. Furnace Creek Ranch. Tecopa. Shoshone. Death Valley Junction. Ash Meadows. Pahrump. There was no power in this country as late as 1960. The ranchers and business owners formed a co-op in the valley - Amargosa Valley Electric Co- op-

To get the lines laid, a rural electric loan was needed. After completing the loan application with the help of an attorney, many meetings with BLM and other rural Co-ops throughout the west, they got their loan. Nevada Power went to building a spite line. They started coming out of the Mercury area over on this side with their line, and they had it made up with Edison Company where they hooked up - and it's st i l l hooked up.

By 1963 the Valley now had power, including Sandy, Pahrump, Amargosa, and Beatty. Beatty had a director, Fish Lake had a director, Amargosa had a director, and Pahrump had a director to help run the co-op and make sure that the power and fees were kept at a reasonable rate.

The name has since been changed to the Valley Electric Association. This all started because of a few Amargosa Ranchers and Business Men had the desire to better their community and the surrounding area.

QIlder Americans Month 2015

iach May, the Administration for Community Living celebrates Older Americans Month to -ecognize older Americans for their contributions to the nation. This year, in honor o f the 50th anniversary o f the Older Americans Act (OAA), we are focusing on how older adults 3re taking charge o f their health, getting engaged in their communities, and making a ~os i t i ve impact in the lives of others. The theme for Older Americans Month 2015 is Get into the Act.

iere in Amargosa, we have a super example of older Americans making a positive impact on our :ommunity: the volunteers who are remodeling the "new" Senior Center. With their experience, tnowledge and time, many men and women over 65 have donated 5000 plus hours to this job for :he last three years. This is the equivalent of over $100,000 in donations! We congratulate them and 3re grateful. Stay tuned for the Open House invitation!!!

Amargosa Valley / Beatty High School Scholarship Fund 1734VanPattenLane

Amargosa Valley, NV 89020

We need your help!

The Amargosa ValleyIBeatty High School Scholarship Fund Committee was formed to encourage and help fund graduating students to continue higher education. Many students don't consider continuing their education due to the lack of funding. We feel that by offering scholarships and giving them the opportunity, more students will choose to achieve more education.

Due to our economy, everyone is stressed with rising costs, losing equity and for some, loss of employment. Students and their farr~ilies are wondering how they will ever be able to afford the additional costs of higher education. Please help us support the Class of 2015 Graduates!

Scholarships are awarded to Graduates of Beatty High School (serving Amargosa Valley, Death Valley and Beatty Communities). Scholarships are awarded to students wishing to further their education on a full time basis at an accredited Trade school, Junior College, College or University. Applications are made through the Beatty High School Counselor's Office, and are complete with class standing, grade point average, activities in school, community activities, need, SAT or ACT scores and a brief description of their future goals.

100% of the money donated goes for scholarships! We are in the process of obtaininq a 501 -C-3 for vour tax deductions. The scholarship funds will be forwarded directly to the institution for tuition and books once the chosen student is enrolled. Last year we were able to give $1000 to each of the 6 applicants.

There are 7 applicants this year, so we hope you will take the time to contribute to our Scholarship Fund. Please make checks payable to: AV/Beatty Scholarship Fund. Checks may be mailed to the address above, or given to a member of the Scholarship Committee.

Graduation is Friday, May 22nd at 7 PM at the Beatty High School. Donations need to be in by May 1 1 , 201 5 so that we will know how many scholarships we will be able to award. Every dollar helps us to reach our goal.

Thank you for your consideration and we hope we can count on your continued support.

Sincerely, Scholarship Committee Members Jean Adams, Jon DeLee, and Diane George

At the Nye County Water District Governing Board meeting of April 27, 2015 the Directors, James Weeks and David Hall, voted to approve sending a letter to Senator Pete Goicoechea s~,~pporting the Senate Amendment No. 467 to Senate Bill No. 8 1 Section 7 (4): The State Engineer shall supervise all underground water and wells, including, ~vrt t iout lirn~tation, those wells for domestic purposes for which a permit is not required.

The blue font is the amendment language to the present law.

This Amendment will allow the State Engineer to regulate the use of your well. At present, the State Engineer has only the power to approve the drilling of a domestic well.

Section 3 of the 1939 Water Act Chap, 178: This act shall not apply to developing use of underground water for domestic purposes where the draught does not exceed 2 gallons per minute and where the water developed is not an artesian well. The 2 gallons per minute has been amended to 2 acre-feet per year.

The Nevada Supreme Court ruled A Well for domestic purposes (domestic wells) is real property of the landowner. The domestic well pumps the percolating water which is part of the soil. Percolating groundwater is "Filtrating or percolating water oozing through the soil beneath the surface in undefined and unknown channels, and therefore a component part of the earth, has no characteristic of ownership distinct from the land itself, and therefore is not subject of appropriation by another, but belongs to the Owner of the soil." [MOSIER V. CALDWELL, 7 Nev . 363 (1872)l

Frank Maurizio and I have filed a class action law suit over this very issue. I f you want to support us please join the Private Well Owners Cooperative of Nye County. The membership fee is $60 per year.
