Wesley Heritage2019 Tour

Day 1 Depart from USAYour Wesley Heritage travel study program begins as you departthe United States on your international flight to England.

Day 2 ARRIVAL in ENGLAND and YORK visitArrive in Manchester this morning. Visit York Minster Cathedralbefore enjoying free time this afternoon to explore York on yourown. Consider a walk around the city walls, built on Roman erafoundations, for an excellent view of the city, or visit the YorkCastle Museum and the JORVIK Viking Centre for a look throughthe history of York.

Day 3 EPWORTH The quiet English countryside and green, rolling hills will delightyou as you travel to remote Epworth in the Fen Country. HereSamuel and Susanna Wesley raised their brood of children inthe Old Rectory while he served the Parish Church for 39 years.You’ll become familiar with the upbringing and early life of Johnand Charles Wesley when you visit their childhood home. You’llsee Memorial Church, built with contributions from around theworld. Enjoy a worship service with the local people of Epworth.Then visit St. Andrews Church at Epworth.

Day 4 OXFORDLearn about the educational background of the Wesley brothersJohn, Charles and Samuel, Jr. when you view Christ ChurchCollege at Oxford University.

Day 5 BRISTOL and BATH In the ancient port city of Bristol, you’ll have a lecture in one ofWesley’s early centers of ministry, the “New Room”. This oldestMethodist building in the world is unusually attractive in its basicsimplicity. Then visit the home of Charles Wesley, the famoushymn writer. Bath, a spa town of Roman origin, deserves itsname. Since the first century, the warm waters have refreshedand healed. You’ll see the unique Roman baths and enjoy thisbeautiful city of 18th century streets and quaint shops.

Day 6 COTSWOLDS and STRATFORDEnjoy a scenic drive through the charming villages of theCotswolds where honey colored cottages cluster together insecluded valleys. Enjoy a visit to Burton-on-the-Water, one of themost visited Cotswolds villages. You’ll glimpse life as it was inthe day of William Shakespeare when you visit his birthplace inStratford-upon-Avon. Not far away, he courted his wife, Anne

Hathaway, in the garden of her delightful thatched-roof cottage.You’ll also drive past Holy Trinity Church, where Shakespeare isburied.

Day 7 WESLEY'S LONDONJohn Wesley left his mark on the town of London. You’ll have alecture at City Road Chapel, site of Wesley’s home and grave.Across the street in Bunhill Fields Cemetery, Susanna Wesley isburied along with other famous personages such as JohnBunyan and Daniel Defoe. You’ll walk on Aldersgate Streetwhere on May 24, 1738; John Wesley had his “Warming of theHeart” experience. You’ll walk past the entrance of “LittleBritain” where Charles Wesley had his conversion experiencejust three days earlier. Drive by the major city sites such asMarble Arch, Speakers Corner of Hyde Park, Trafalgar Squareand much more. Your first view will be of Westminster Abbeywhere royalty are christened, married and buried. You will visitSt. Paul’s Cathedral where John Wesley often worshipped. Onthe day of his conversion, Wesley came here for an afternoonservice and was deeply moved by the choir’s anthem, "Out ofthe Deep Have I Called Unto Thee, O Lord". Your dinner is onyour own this evening.

Day 8 FREE DAY IN LONDONExperience the lifestyle of our British friends as you explore thevibrant town of London on your own. Go and see the regaladornment of Buckingham Palace. Take a ride on the LondonEye. Visit the British Museum and wonder at ancient treasuresand works of art. Experience a show in London's famous WestEnd theater district. Enjoy any of these options or more as youenjoy the sights and sounds of London on your own today. Yourdinner is on your own this evening.

Day 9 DEPARTURESSay farewell as you return to the USA or enjoy the Londonextension or the exciting extension to Ireland.

Day 9 - Cork, Cobh, BlarneyDepart England on your flight to Cork, Ireland. Our representatives will meet you at theairport and transfer you to your Irish bus as we head for Cobh. Here, you will visit theHeritage Center. From this port between 1845 and 1860, 2.5 million people sailed toAmerica. If you had an ancestor who came from Ireland to America, find your familyname on the archived passenger lists. Visit Blarney Castle and Blarney Woollen MillsShop. At the Castle of Blarney, you will see the fabled Blarney Stone. Legend says thatthose who kiss the stone acquire a gift of eloquence. Check into your Killarney areahotel for dinner and overnight.Day 10 - Ring of Kerry, Waterville, Muckross HouseDelight in some of the most spectacular scenery as you travel the Ring of Kerry. Pauseat the seaside village of Waterville. Here Charlie Chaplin owned a summer home, andPayne Stewart was Club Captain of the local golf course. Visit the 19th century MuckrossHouse. You will enjoy this magnificent Victorian mansion that is considered one ofIreland’s leading stately homes. Return to Killarney for dinner and overnight. Day 11 - Adare, Rock of Cashel, DublinEnjoy the beauty of the thatch roofed streets of Adare. The church here has a NormanCastle keep at its center. See the Rock of Cashel, the traditional seat of Irish kings. HereSt. Patrick is thought to have converted the King of Munster. The present ruins are fromstructures built in the 12th and 13th centuries during the Norman era. Continue on toDublin for dinner and overnight.Day 12 - DublinExplore historic St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The church was transitioned from a Catholicchurch to the Church of Ireland over the centuries. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver’sTravels was a pastor here. John Wesley spoke and administered communion here onone of his numerous visits to Ireland. Take a walking tour of Trinity College. Founded byQueen Elizabeth I in 1592, it is the oldest college in Ireland. Visit the Old Library hereand see the Book of Kells, an ornately illustrated Bible produced by Celtic monks around800 AD. Enjoy lunch at the Church, a pub that was originally a church where Wesleypreached on his first visit to Ireland. Enjoy an afternoon to explore and shop on yourown as you walk along the Liffey River or visit the various museums.
