The Motorola MC65 gave Hazen Transport the capabilities to strategically grow their customer base, and save money through increased driver efficiency.

SITUATION Hazen Transport wanted to improve their efficiency and speed while also being able to commingle deliveries for multiple customers in one truckload. They needed a new scanning solution and software to support these goals.

With 23 locations nationally, Hazen Transport serves a wide range of clients in a number of industries, including automotive, healthcare, manufacturing, retail and more. When its biggest client, a major national retailer, asked that Hazen mix multiple customers’ freight on the same truck at the same time, Hazen needed to find a new scanning solution to be able to track its commingled truckloads. They reached out to a trusted partner, Lowry Computer Products, for a recommendation.

SOLUTION Hazen chose the Motorola MC65 Mobile Computer to scan, track and validate proof of delivery.

When Lowry Computer Products suggested Motorola Solutions, Hazen gave each of its drivers a Motorola MC65 Mobile Computer. They used it to run Cardinal Logistics software to inventory shipments as they came in, track them as they were loaded into their trucks, plan the most efficient route for each truck, and get the customer signature for the delivery right on the device. This solution saved Hazen money by consolidating multiple applications on a single device, eliminating duplicate effort and reducing errors. It also changed the way they did business without introducing complexity.

RESULT Hazen’s drivers work faster and more efficiently than ever before. And the company has grown by taking on new customers.

After using the new mobile computers for just a few days, the drivers soon realized they were much faster and easier to use than the devices they were accustomed to. Drivers’ jobs got easier, truck routes were streamlined, and customers noticed a difference in the expediency of deliveries and the quality of information available to them. The MC65 Mobile Computer helped Hazen Transport successfully expand its business model from focusing on one big customer to simultaneously servicing customers of all sizes.

USING TECHNOLOGY TO EXPAND BUSINESS Hazen Transport is a $60 million national transportation company. With 23 distribution centers, the company delivers goods for customers in the upper Midwest, Florida and Texas regions. Their main customers are office supply companies and their area of greatest growth is in retail store replenishment.

Hazen has a trusted relationship with Lowry Computer Products, a Motorola Solutions partner, and approached them to suggest a solution that would provide each driver with a mobile terminal they could use for bar code scanning and to automate data capture at the points of pick-up and delivery.

“Hazen wanted all their drivers to be able to use the same device so they could simplify their training requirements,” says Sean Lowry, Transportation and Logistics Account Manager. “The MC65 Mobile Computer has a software-defined radio that works with whichever cellular carrier is best for a particular geographic location, so it quickly rose to the top of the solutions we could recommend to Hazen.”

Until 2010, Hazen was primarily dedicated to its largest client, a national office supply company. They had to use that customer’s existing scanning solution to integrate with their operations. But, when the customer asked

Hazen to commingle its deliveries with others to defray the costs of dedicated delivery, Hazen had to find a new scanning solution to accommodate new customers.

“We wanted to be able to grow, add on customers, and really have something that was adaptable,” says Rick Palmer, Hazen Transportation Vice President. “Every customer is different, with different exception codes. We needed a customizable hardware/software solution so the customer could tell us how they code things and how they want things transmitted back to them.”

EFFICIENCY, EFFECTIVENESS AND HAPPY CUSTOMERS The transition from their old hardware and software solution to the Motorola MC65 Mobile Computer running Cardinal Logistics software was seamless and fast. “It was such an easy transition, our drivers were able to catch on within a day,” says Palmer. One of the biggest improvements they immediately saw was speed. “Our drivers save minutes at each stop. With anywhere from 40 to 100 stops depending on the customer, that makes a huge difference in the day,” he adds.

The technology gives Hazen a competitive advantage as well. When customers look for a new shipping partner, invariably the technology and software solution they use to manage their operations is a major deciding factor. “When it gets down to the finalists bidding for a new job, the customer always wants to know about your technology and your solution. We are hitting a home run every time and winning the technology battle against our competitors because customers know Motorola is top of the line in the industry,” Palmer says.

Now Hazen is winning new customers because they are able to provide more detailed information faster and in the exact format customers require. “Our old solution did not give us the exact details we or our customers needed,” says Brian Pazinski, Hazen Operations Manager. “Plus some of the inbound scans were not accurate. But what we have now is more expedient and we can report to our customers in a better time.”

“We needed a solution that would enable us to load faster, scan faster and be more efficient on the road. We got all of that and more.” Rick Palmer, Vice President, Hazen Transport

THE BRAINS OF THE OPERATION At the heart of a trucking company are its drivers. Making their job easier and making them more productive enhances the entire operation. When driver Laurie Hall tried the new MC65 Mobile Computer, she knew right away that it was going to change everything. “It’s easier to read, which makes it easier to find and get to my next stop. And flipping through is just a lot more efficient and a lot faster,” she says.

According to driver Mike Keir, “We go out on our deliveries and we use the scanner to make sure we are not leaving any packages behind. When we deliver to the customer, we use it for our signatures. It’s the brains of the operation. It tells us if we are short anything, if anything was left behind, if there was anything damaged, and everything goes in the scanner and is relayed back to the office. They know about it before we even get back at the end of the day.”

EFFICIENCIES SAVE MONEY AND GROW BUSINESS

“The biggest change for our drivers was they got more efficient,” says Palmer. “Our drivers can now make more stops, so we actually have fewer trucks on the road driving fewer miles. Our emissions, overall mileage and number of trucks on the road have definitely gone down.”

Through improvements in productivity, efficiency and control made possible by the hardware and software solution that Lowry proposed, Hazen has seen marked time and costs savings. The changes have also allowed the company to focus on taking more customers and growing the business. WHAT’S NEXT

“We are continuing to grow our small package delivery network in the facilities that we are in,” Palmer says.

“We are in 23 locations across the country. We have a lot of density in each one of those markets through our main customers and now we’re starting to grow some of that. Our biggest win that we are seeing lately is in retail store replenishment within our small package network. Typically less-than-truckload carriers do this, but thanks to the savings we see with these new efficiencies, we are finding that we can price and win some of those major store replenishment programs.”

The hardware and software solution has made it easier for Hazen to take on more customers and realize time and cost savings. It’s all about more control, increased efficiency and higher productivity:

• More accurate information means fewer errors and happier customers

• Efficiently loaded trucks and efficiently planned routes mean fewer trucks on the road

• Faster and smarter devices mean more productive drivers
