Hindu American Religious Institute “HARI” has been blessed with a congregation that has supported it unstintingly since the inception in 1975. That support has led to one of the most prominent Hindu landmarks in the capital of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We thank the founders and senior members of HARI congregation for their vision. This legacy must now be nurtured and preserved for future generations. In 2004, the Board of trustees had initiated a “HARI Long Term Self Sufficiency” initiative. In 2005, “HARI Trust Fund (HTF) Steering Committee” was formed, which developed a strategy and an action plan. In 2006, an agreement was signed with “The Foundation for Enhancing Communities” to manage the funds for HARI. HTF, being an Endowment fund, the principal is not used. Only the earnings may be used based on the need of the Temple and the Board of Trustees approval. Under Donor advised funds, Donors, if desire, have a choice of naming the donation and say in as to how and where the funds can be used.

Why does HARI need an Endowment (HARI Trust Fund “HTF”)? Operating expenses go up each year as costs of for utilities, insurance, staff

compensations, facility maintenance, and supplies rise. Operating income needs to be supplemented.

To provide long term self sufficiency and growth for HARI Temple.

What is the Goal of HTF? To have a minimum of One Million Dollar $1,000,000 in the HTF.

What are the Benefits to HARI? HARI gets a steady income stream from the earnings* of the HTF. Needed capital expenditures can be planned and completed to ensure

that the temple is well maintained on an Annual basis. HARI can continue to preserve Hindu religious and cultural heritage through

expanded services and programs.

Who is managing HTF at HARI? HARI Trust Fund Steering Committee, reporting to the HARI Board of Trustees. At present, the Committee consists of the following devotees:

Aggarwal, Ashok Patel, Naran Amin, Hiten Dr. Patel, Shashikant Amin, Janak Shah, Hasu Desai, BC Shah, Kirti Gangadhar, Dasa Shukla, Ashok Gupta, Deep Subramanian, Srinivasan Dr. Joshi, Nirmal Venkatasubramanian, Ravi Dr. Kathiresan, Ray Yedatore, Jagannath Kendre, Ken Chairman (ex-officio) Dr. Kullarni, Mukund President (ex-officio) Dr. Parikh, Mukul / Neelima Treasurer (ex-officio) Patel, KD Finance Committee Chair (ex- Officio) Patel, Kiran

Who is managing the funds for HARI? The Foundation for Enhancing Communities “TFEC” in Harrisburg (formerly known as Harrisburg Foundation), under the direction of the HTF Coordinator, HTF Steering Committee, is managing the funds for HARI.

What is the current status of the HARI funds? To date we have received pledges of $271,000. We have the following HARI funds at TFEC (Sep 30, 2007):

HARI Trust Fund: $140,511 Educational Fund: $ 56,578 Rainy Day Operational Fund: $113,194

On Sep 15, 2007 $25,000 was given from the earnings of the funds for the “Asphalt repaving at the Temple premises” Project.

HARI Trust Fund is an Endowment fund, as detailed in this document. Through Education Fund (an Endowment fund), award of HARI Scholarship

is being planned. Rainy Day Operation Fund is an emergency, safety fund for the operation

and maintenance of the HARI temple.

What is “Sri Hanuman Tree”? It is a donor recognition sculpture designed by the famous artist “Sanford

Werfel”, located on the ground floor, just below the feet of Lord Rama. Based on the amount of donation, name (Children, Parents, Business or

Yours) will be inscribed on the leaves of the tree. You are welcome to donate any amount to HARI for any initiatives. Any

donation above $2,500 towards HTF or Projects or General Donations or other Gift Instruments will be recognized in the tree.

How do I participate in HTF? Contact any current Board of Trustees or Executive Committee members. To donate, please fill the attached HTF Pledge form and mail it to HARI at

AAABBBOOOUUUTTT DDDIIIWWWAAALLLIII The customs of celebrating Diwali, the festival of light vary from region to region. Though the theme of Diwali is universal, i.e., the triumph of Good over Evil, the Darkness paving way for Light and Ignorance leading to Knowledge. Diwali is celebrated for five days from Krishna Chaturdashi to Kaartik Shukla Dwiteeya. Diwali is observed by Hindus, Sikhs & Jains. First Day: Dhanteras – Wednesday, November 07, 2007 Throughout India, the first day of Diwali is widely known as Dhanteras. This day is celebrated to revere Dhanavantri, the physician of the gods, and Goddess Laxmi. Dhanteras is also known by various other names such as Dhanatrayodashi, Asweyuja Bahula Thrayodasi / Dhantheran (in few South Indian States). Second Day: Kalichudas – Thursday, November 08, 2007 In every Indian household, the second day is celebrated with the lighting of 5-7 deep (Diyas) on the door and corners. It is Diwali on a smaller scale, with fewer lights lit and fewer crackers burst. Third Day: Diwali – Friday, November 09, 2007 Accompanied by the exchange of sweets and the explosion of fireworks, the third day of Diwali as the most important and significant day. The name Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali. Other names that vary according to the regions are: Lakshmi Puja: Diwali is synonymous with Lakshmi puja. Houses are decorated; Goddess Lakshmi is worshiped for prosperity and health. Chopda Puja: Diwali also represents the start of a new business year so all businesses close their accounts and present them to Lakshmi and Ganesh during the Chopda Puja. Balindra Puja: Diwali is also known as Balindra Puja in many South Indian States. In the morning, a puja offering oil to Krishna is performed. Fourth Day: New Year – Saturday, November 10, 2007 The fourth day of Diwali falls on the first day of the lunar New Year. At this time, it is a new year for most of the Hindus, while for others on this day old business accounts are settled and new books are opened. The families celebrate it by dressing in new clothes, wearing jewelry and visiting family members. Fifth Day: Bhai-Bij, Sunday, November 11, 2007 The fifth day of Diwali is widely known as Bhai dooj or Bhatri Ditya, and is dedicated to the sacred bond shared between brothers and sisters. It is a big family day.
