___________________________________________ FESTIVAL SPOTLIGHT— by Dr. Pai

Rama Navami is the celebration of the birthday of Sri Rama who was born on this day in the holy land of Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. Rama is the seventh incarnation of Sri Vishnu. Rama Navami falls on the ninth day of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Chaitra (March/April). This year it falls on Sunday, April 14. The word “Rama” literally means one who is divinely blissful and who gives joy to others, and one in whom the sages rejoice. Sri Rama taught us how to live our lives in accordance with dharma and divine principles. He was the embodiment of compassion, gentleness, kindness, righteousness and integrity. Ramayana, or life journey of Sri Rama, teaches us how to be the perfect son, the perfect brother, the perfect hus-band and the perfect king. Sri Rama’s reign in Ayodhya (Ramarajya) is considered the epitome of perfect governance. In nutshell, Sri Rama exemplified the perfect person. Hindus all over the world fast or eat only fruit or special food offerings prepared for the day. Many Hindus participate in non-stop recitation of the 24,000-verse epic Ramcharitmanas, at home or in a temple. In many places in India and around the world, dance-drama troupes depict the Ramayana (Ramlila) on stage and theaters. In many parts of India, temples make and serve Panaka, or Sweet Indian Limeade, to devotees. Jaggery or brown sugar, juice of one lime, grated fresh ginger, little ghee, and a pinch of cardamom powder are mixed in water to make Panaka. It is served cold.

Grand Sponsors: Mrs. Shobhana Devendra Parikh, Mrs. Parul Jagdish Shah, Mrs. Kalpana Ket-an Sheth, Mrs. Hersha Hasu Shah, Mrs. Leena Rajubhai Parekh and Mr. Piyush and late Mrs.

Pragnya Gandhi

BRIEF LESSON ON THEORY OF KARMA:

The impact of Karma and pudgalas on the soul is deep. The relationship between the soul and Karma is without beginning. Though Karma becomes inert, it envelops the soul in the form of an energy. It is not correct to think that the soul was pure once, and that later it became enveloped in Karmas. The soul and Karma have been bound together always and that has no beginning. Of course, it is possible to prevent new Karmas from entering the soul. Jain darshan believes that Karmic particles is a physical substance that is everywhere in the universe. The Karmic bondage occurs as a result of the two processes, Ashrava and Bandh. Ashrava is the inflow of karma. The karmic influx occurs when the particles are attracted to the soul on account of Yoga. Yoga is the vibration of the soul due to activities of mind, speech and body. However, yoga alone does not

produce bondage. The karmas have effect only when they are bound to the consciousness. This binding of the karma to the consciousness is called Bandh.

But it is also possible to discard and destroy the karmas that have collected to the soul and are clinging to it. Gold is found mixed with rocks. In the mines, they cut the rock, take out the pieces and by various physical and chemical processes, pure gold is separated from these pieces of rocks. In the same manner, even the soul can be made bright and pure by discarding and destroy-ing all karmas. It is possible to discard and destroy the karmas that are seated in it exercising an unnatural sway over it and it is possible to deliver the soul from their power. When terror and impact of all the karmas are discarded, the original radiant form of the soul shows itself.

Jai Jinendra!

Jai Shri Ram All Dear Members from our HARI Family, This is the 2nd Edition of HARI Times in this year and we are taking this opportunity to provide de-tails related to some work HARI BOT & EC Team has engaged itself into (see Table, next page). As we mentioned in the opening address that some of these projects have long term gains for our capabilities to serve better in all aspects of services provided at HARI. Please let us know if you'd be interested in getting more details and possibly sponsoring any of the projects listed above. Also as part of Shramdaan, we already have had multiple projects worked where volunteers helped by donating combined 145 Hrs. We are looking at more of this to continue. This expands from Yo-ga, Paint work and kids activities which we have kick started and are focused on to increase at the time goes by. HARI BOT & EC are also very excited to host a HARI Fundraiser on May 19th and details of which are to be communicated as an when the details are finalized. Our very talented local artists will work on a theme which is very near and dear to our hearts. Please mark your calendars as this will be presenting something exciting and heartwarming. As always we are looking for all your blessings to move forward in each and every aspect of the work we are doing. With Best Regards President Chairman Sunil K Sharma Basava Shankar Sanke

HARI UPDATE ON RECENT CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DEVOTEES AND PLEA TO CONTRIBUTE TO NEW PROJECTS

HARI is a charitable organization that runs on generous contributions from its devotees and community members. Over the last many decades, it has served to meet the spiritual needs as well as many social and cultural needs of those that it serves. Thanks to its presence, so many children of first generation Hindu im-migrants have benefitted from learning and perpetuating the rich culture and tradition of Hinduism and in-deed India. Offering not only rich religious and cultural values, it has also been home to education in Indian languages and art forms such as dance and music.

HARI has always had two main goals:

Continuing to offer the rich cultural and religious services that it offers on a daily basis (Operational and Capital improvement projects), and

Plan strategically for the future, to make sure the organization remains viable and healthy for future gen-erations (The HARI Trust Fund)

Every few years, programs and drives raise funds to accomplish one of the above goals. Most recent efforts including the very ambitious Sanskriti program resulted in your hard earned and generously contributed dol-lars to go into distinct HARI temple upgrades, such as those listed below:

Your Recent Contributions At Work

The Railing Project

The Retaining Wall, Outside Beautification Projects, Chandeliers, Restrooms Upgrade

The Board of Trustees & the Executive Committee that you have chosen to represent you, continue to strive to improve the temple facilities as they think both for immediate needs and also for the future.

“Once Upon a Time in India” on May 19th, under the direction of Drs. Nirmal and Renu Joshi, with support from our entire talented community, will bring to you another stage program that is a historical musical and dance treat. It will also raise funds for new and very specific projects for upcoming months. You will see the results of such funding almost immediately. Please see Table on the previous page for the he de-scription of the projects for which your contributions for “ONCE UPON A TIME IN INDIA” be used.

Namaste,

This year has been very exciting for HARI School. For the academic year 2018-19, we have nearly 160 students registered for various classes that the school offers. Few highlights from the school activities are as below:

On Sunday, February 10, HARI School celebrated the “Vasant Panchami” event. Students par-ticipated in the Goddess Saraswati Puja to receive Her blessings.

Presently, teachers and students are preparing for the “Holi” program. Please mark your calen-dars for Sunday, March 24, so you can attend the Holi event.

On Sunday, April 28, we will be celebrating Guru Vandana.

We are also planning various Youth Forum activities, such as an Open House with under graduates, volunteering at the PA Food Bank, and a nature hike.

With Lord Rama’s grace and your support, we have been able to provide lunch-prasad during all Sundays that school is in session. We encourage members of the community to sponsor lunch-prasad for Sunday school to celebrate special occasions. We are looking forward to updating you with more exciting news in the near future!

School Director Youth Forum Director Minoo Hiten Amin Alok Srivastava

HARI Security

Safety of our devotees, priests, employees and visitors at HARI is our highest priority. Even though our Harrisburg area and HARI is safe, keeping all our safety in mind, HARI management is employing few security officers at HARI events of large gatherings and Sunday school. These security officer's duty is only to protect our members and for no other reason. The security was implemented on February 10, 2019 and since then there is a security officer present on HARI premises on every Sunday school day and on two major events: Maha Shivratri and Holi.
