Depending on the jurisdiction, your salary will be tax-free or low-tax, giving you a head start in saving for the

future.

Salaries for newly-qualified Audit Seniors with the Big Four are in the US$60-75,000 range depending on

the role/location. All expat packages include paid relocation, bonus incentive, work permit sponsorship,

paid vacation and medical/life insurance benefits. Audit Managers command salaries in the six figures, whilst

Corporate/Trust Lawyers with 5-10 years’ PQE can earn a base of US$200-250,000 or more.

There is no income tax in Bermuda or Cayman. Bermuda salaries can be higher than in other jurisdictions,

2: What are promotion prospects like?

though do note that there is a 5.5% payroll deduction there. The tax rate after allowances is 8% in the BVI

whilst, in the Channel Islands, income tax is 20% after allowances.

For UK applicants, adjusting for $/£ at 1.50 and using 2016/17 income tax and NI rates, a US$79,365 income

tax-free salary earned in Bermuda, for example, equates to a UK gross salary of £73,505.

Notwithstanding the recent global downturn, many firms have continued to experience growth so there are

exceptional prospects for high performers.

Even better, these prospects are enhanced by the traditionally high staff turnover on the Islands. This arises for

two reasons: first, competition for experienced staff is fierce so competitive salaries are offered to lure professionals

to new positions; and second, most people decide at some point to return home or move elsewhere, leveraging

the skills they have picked up working on the Island, and in so doing create a new opening.

3: Do you have jobs in public practice? For accountants, there are jobs in Audit, Accounting Services, Secondments and in Insolvency. (Whilst there

are vacancies in US Tax for US CPAs, unfortunately this is not the case for tax specialists from other countries).

Audit roles start in September, sometimes with a smaller January intake. We interview chartered accountants in

anticipation of these roles year-round. It’s always smart to apply early as that’s when there are the most jobs as

yet unfilled so don’t delay if you want to stand the best chance of success.

Outside of finance, there are opportunities for Corporate, Dispute Resolution and Hedge Fund Lawyers, as

4: What about jobs in commerce? Career positions for accountants are generally of a Financial Accountant nature, often for US clients of the

offshore funds and international insurance management companies. Prior relevant sector experience helps

but this is not a requirement, provided you’re keen to learn. You will need, however, to have solid financial

statements preparation experience.

5: How will my career benefit?Modern firms think globally and so should you. There’s no substitute for broadening your experience to include

an international perspective, and multinationals expect future management to have successfully undertaken at

least one assignment abroad. So to compete effectively and fulfil your true potential, you need to think locally

and strategise globally; you can achieve all of this offshore.

6: I’m an Audit Manager. Can I transfer abroad at the same level?If you don’t have financial services experience, you probably won’t be able to join at the same level. For example,

if you’re presently a regular Audit Manager, you aren’t equipped to move across as an FS Audit Manager because

you lack the necessary industry knowledge. This is remediable. In such instances, it’s worth taking ‘half a step

back to take a full step forward’ to improve your long-term career trajectory.

7: How long are job contracts for?Standard audit or accounting contracts are initially for two years (or effectively for two busy seasons, if you’re

in audit). For lawyers, contracts are usually for 2-3 years’ fixed initial duration and are thereafter open-ended.

An extremely high percentage of people choose to stay on beyond their initial contract period - a sure sign that

life is good there - so candidates with an open mind about how long they might end up staying are particularly

encouraged to apply. Employers like such applicants.

Do note that, generally speaking, short-term contracts (e.g. six months) are not usually practical. This is because

the costs (relocation, work permits, training) involved in making a new hire mean it’s not worthwhile to bring

people over for shorter periods. Also, to enjoy the tax benefits of being officially non-resident in your home

country, you’ll probably need to be abroad for at least a tax year.

8: How much holiday will I get?To start, most employers offer 15 days’ paid vacation days plus statutory public holidays (an additional 10 or so

days, depending on location) making 25+ days in all. Others may offer 20 days’ vacation plus official holidays.

If you’re concerned about time off, do bear in mind that relatives are bound to come put to stay with you and

you’ll never have to take time off for a beach holiday.

9: How much overtime is there?It’s difficult to predict as this clearly depends on your client mix, staffing levels and deadlines. However, a study

by one of the Big Four firms on 26 of its Seniors in Bermuda found that on average they did 166 hours a year.

This equates to 3 hours a week, with most of the overtime occurring during busy season (January to April).

10: Where do most of your successful candidates come from?l Accountants: Successful candidates will generally be qualified ACAs, CAs, CPAs and ACCAs from the

United Kingdom, Canada, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and South Africa. This is because there is

reciprocal recognition of the qualifications for these countries for the purposes of being granted a visa.

l Lawyers: Usually you will need to have qualified in a Commonwealth country and have 3+ years of relevant

PQE within the sphere you are applying for. Most lawyers come from the UK but others come from Canada,

Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Legal experience in financial services is often required though very

strong Corporate/Litigation lawyers without this experience may be considered.

11: Outside of work, what is living on the Islands like?The recreational lifestyle is second to none. Think about it: these are tourist destinations as well as being business

centres. So there’s no wasted commuting time, taxes or freezing ice. The climate is great and there’s a definite

work hard/play hard ethos. New expats tend to be of a similar age (mid-to-late 20s) so there’s no shortage of

people with whom to socialise.

Additionally, because of the impact of work permit restrictions, more single people than couples tend to make

the move offshore at newly/recently qualified level, meaning that you will definitely enjoy an exceptionally

active social life

13: I’ve seen an offshore advert from my own firm. Should I apply direct?l Probably not: The first thing that will happen is that the offshore branch will contact your home office to

check for references or negotiate whether you can be released. There’s no incentive for them to facilitate your

goal - unless you agree to be tied into returning at a future date, which we promise you won’t want to do once

your horizons have expanded. Added to which, there’s no guarantee you’ll be successful in getting the transfer,

even if you request it.

12: Is it easy to make new friends?Life on the Islands is very sociable. Every year, hundreds of young professionals make the move, jump-starting

the next stage of their working life. For most it’s a fresh, exciting new start. And from the people you meet at

work, to the people you meet at the beach or share a house with, you’ll be making friends fast so don’t worry

about establishing a new social network. It’s easy!

14: Don’t some companies prefer not to use headhunters?Companies on the Islands are accustomed to using specialist recruitment agencies, and the associated cost is

factored into their hiring budgets. Your salary won’t be adversely affected by coming through an agency. Pay

scales are set solely depending on experience, qualifications and future potential, not from how you came to

join the firm.

17: When should I start applying for jobs? l Accountants: If you’re fully or soon-to-be qualified (i.e. you have passed your exams and just need to

complete your time experience), the best time to apply is now. The longer you leave it, the less attractive as a

candidate you become. Plus openings are limited so it pays to apply early.

l Lawyers: you need to have a minimum of 3 years’ of PQE to be granted a work permit on many of the

Islands so it may make sense to wait if you’ve only just qualified.

l Very few companies limit themselves to direct applications alone

Section 3: Work PermitsAny offer of employment to work on one of the Islands is conditional on successfully obtaining a work permit

from the Department of Immigration.

As a qualified lawyer or accountant, you are virtually guaranteed to be granted a work permit provided you hold

a job offer from an employer, you can provide decent references and the firm has gone through the necessary

step of advertising the position locally in case there is a suitable Islander also available for consideration.

Your new employer will guide and sponsor you through the application process. Provided all the correct

information is submitted properly on a timely basis and Immigration procedures are adhered to, suitably

qualified job-seekers should find this process just a formality.

We often get asked if a partner or spouse will be able to go offshore too. The short answer is Yes provided either

A) Your partner is also a qualified lawyer or accountant, or B) You’re married.

In the latter case of a married couple, both are permitted to live on the Island even if only one has a job and

related work permit. Work permits are associated with specific jobs/employers and are not available to use for

any other employer or job.

If you’re married but your spouse won’t be working, employers may be cautious about hiring you if they fear

that either your partner will become bored/lonely or you’ll struggle financially living off a single income (some

of the Islands are not cheap, even if they are tax-free).

If you’re not married, your partner will either need to seek employment in their own right or they’ll have

to remain back on the mainland. In the former case, they might be successful in finding work in Financial

Services, Administration, Hospitality, Teaching, Nursing or the Police but could struggle otherwise (it is highly

desirable for them to have at least two years of relevant work experience plus some sort of relevant supporting

qualification).

In the case of a partner deciding to remain behind, do be aware that employers may have a concern that the

strains of separation could prove too great a risk for them to risk hiring someone who plans on a long-distance

relationship.

What you’re likely to needGuidance on the requirements for individual jurisdictions is provided below. However, necessary documents

usually include the following:

l Certified copy of your passport

l Certified copies of your degree and professional qualification certificates

l Police certificate confirming you have no convictions

l Medical certificate/X-ray confirming good health

l Written references

An implied condition of a job offer is that you’ll supply the required work permit documentation within a

reasonable time period. So be sure to complete your immigration and work permit application on a timely basis.

It can take typically anywhere from 4-8 weeks on average to get final approval after your completed application

has been received on the Island so you need to get the ball rolling once you’ve secured a position.

Ensure you provide everything that is requested, exactly as asked for, together with supporting documentation.

It’s best to assemble the relevant paperwork and submit it to your new employer as a single package rather than

submitting documents separately.

Additionally, be sure to return your completed package by courier (as opposed to air mail, recorded delivery).

This is the only way of ensuring that your application is received promptly.

Some employers ask that you scan and email them what you plan to send by courier, just to make sure that

everything is in order (they know how strict Immigration can be), and to avoid the risk of anything needing to

be resubmitted later.

i) Work permits for BermudaTo get a work permit, a non-Bermudian will need to submit the following:

l A completed Immigration application form and questionnaire

l Certified copies of your qualifications and passport

l A police clearance form

l A full-size chest X-ray

l A medical certificate of good health

l Two character references plus two professional references

l Four (or more) passport-sized photographs

On occasion, employers may want you to arrive more quickly than would be possible under the standard work

permit. In such circumstances, they may arrange for you to be granted a temporary, fast-track permit, which

lets you start work more-or-less immediately, the idea being that your regular permit will be processed whilst

you are already in Bermuda.

Such permits are used sparingly but usually require the following basic information: a certified copy of your

passport, confirmation of your marital status, and confirmation of whether you have any dependants. You will

still need to apply for a regular permit as detailed above but under this mechanism it’s possible for you to have

permission to move to the Island earlier than would otherwise be the case.

ii) Work permits for the British Virgin IslandsThe BVI work permit allows you to be employed in the British Virgin Islands by a specific company, and the

company applies for this permit on your behalf.

An application form requires the following supporting documents:

l A cover letter from the company

l A copy of the prospective employee’s CV

l Proof of your qualification for the position

l A copy of the newspaper advertisement of the job

l A passport-sized photo

The following have to be provided at the airport immediately on your arrival:

l A letter from the government Labour department to your employer approving your employment (someone

from your new company will meet you at the airport with this item)

l Two copies of a police certificate of charter from your country of birth (and from your country of residence,

if different)

l A certificate of good health from your country of residence

Providing the above documents allows you to stay in the BVI for up to two weeks, during which time the BVI

Health Service will verify your medical status.

After this, you are free to collect your work permit from the Labour department and then also your entry permit

(which is a stamp in your passport) from the Immigration department. Once this process is done, you’re legally

permitted to work, reside and travel freely in and out of the British Virgin Islands.

ii) Work permits for the Cayman IslandsGainful occupation licences (GOL) are long-term work permits generally issued for a period of one year, which

are submitted for annual renewal by your employer.

To get a long-term permit issued or renewed, your employer has to advertise the job in the offshore press for

a minimum of two weeks to see whether there is a suitable Caymanian available for the position. In practice,

subsequent renewals are almost always granted.

You’ll need to assemble the following documentation to get your GOL:

l A completed Immigration application form

l Certified copies of your qualifications and passport

l A police clearance form (non-UK)/Sworn affidavit (UK applicants)

l A medical certificate of good health in the prescribed format

l Three references of good character (from non-relatives)

l Four passport-sized photographs (one must be in profile)

Temporary or short-term permits are designed to fill seasonal positions (such as a diving instructor working

through the tourist season). Local newspaper advertising is not required for temporary permit applications.

iii) Work permits for the Channel Islands

GuernseyThose who are not already a resident of Guernsey and want to apply for employment need to be sure that they

will be officially eligible to find accommodation, and will have to obtain a Right to Work document to prove

they are legally housed.

If you’re working in the finance sector, the Housing Authority issues you with an ‘essential housing licence’,

which is usually attached to the specific job you have been hired for. Licences are generally issued for 3-5 year

durations. Without such a licence, you’re not allowed to remain on the Island.

JerseyNationals from the UK/EU do not require a work permit or visa to enter Jersey or Guernsey. If you are

from outside the UK/EU, you’re likely to need a work permit to live and work in Jersey, unless you are a

Commonwealth citizen who is admitted on the grounds of UK ancestry.

Everyone else will need a skilled worker visa, which will be applied for on your behalf by your new employer.

Sports in Bermuda

Bermuda is a sporting paradise, particularly for those who love water and beach activities, golf and tennis. There

are also football, cricket, volleyball and softball teams and leagues, as well as enviable facilities to play squash and

run marathons (Bermuda residents often take part in the New York, Boston or London marathons).

Sporting links worth checking out include: Mid Ocean Golf Club, Port Royal Golf Club, Ocean View Golf

Club, Riddell’s Bay Golf & Country Club, Tucker’s Point Golf Club, Bermuda Football Association, Bermuda

Lawn Tennis Association, Elbow Beach Tennis, Beach Tennis Bermuda, Pomander Gate Tennis Club, Bermuda

Other social activities

Due to its British heritage, there are lots of pubs in Bermuda, especially in Hamilton. These include the

Pickled Onion, the Robin Hood, the Hog Penny, The Porch, Flanagan’s, the White Horse, the Frog & Onion,

Northrock, the Wharf Tavern, Docksider, Henry VIII and many more. Wine bars and nightclubs include

Chewstick, Tucker’s Bar, Ozone, Bistro at the Beach, Deep Lounge, Pier Six, Splash and the Spinning Wheel.

With an eye also on the tourist crowd, there are many superb restaurants, offering a range of international

cuisine as well as great seafood. Movie theatres include the Liberty Theatre, the Specialty Cinema, Southside

Cinema and the Neptune Cinema.

ii) British Virgin IslandsThe British Virgin Islands is rated as the top charter destination in the world, and for good reason. The Islands

are close together and easy to approach, with protected and calm waters. Resorts, famous beachside bars, varied

and fine restaurants, laid-back towns, and excellent venues for swimming on beautiful white sandy beaches - or

snorkelling in sea caves and on shipwrecks - are among the main attractions.

Water activities

Consistently recognised as one of the most breath-taking destinations in the world and the undisputed Sailing

Capital of the World, the BVI presents a choice of 60 islands for exploring. Perfect sailing conditions and

sheltered passages make the BVI a delight for all levels of sailor wanting to relax in a Caribbean paradise with

steady trade winds for sailing and sheltered bays with white sandy beaches in warm, crystal clear seas.

Perhaps the finest beach is Cane Garden Bay, on the aptly named Cane Garden Bay Road, directly west of Road

Town. (It’s definitely a favourite of ours!) You’ll have to navigate some roller-coaster hills to get there, but the

fine white sands, with sheltering palm trees and gentle surf, are among the most popular in the BVI, and the

lovely bay is many a yachtie’s favourite. Outfitters here rent Hobie Cats, kayaks and sailboards. Windsurfing

is possible as well. There are no less than seven places to eat along the beach, plus a sprinkling of bars. But be

prepared for crowds in the high season.

Surfers like Apple Bay, which is west of Cane Garden Bay along North Shore Road. The beach isn’t very big but

that doesn’t diminish activity when the surf ’s up. After enjoying the white sands here, you can have a drink at

the Bomba Surfside Shack, a classic dive of a beach bar at the water’s edge.

East of Cane Garden Bay, Brewers Bay is ideal for snorkelers and surfers. This white-sand beach is a great place

to enjoy walks in the early morning or at sunset. Or just sip a rum punch from the beach bar and watch the

world go by. There is also a campground if you want to stay overnight.

Smugglers Cove is known for its tranquillity and for the attractiveness of its sands. It’s a favourite with locals.

The Cove is also popular with snorkelers, who explore a world of sea fans, sponges, parrotfish, elk horn and brain

corals. Beginner snorkelers in particular appreciate the fact that the reef is close to shore. The beach, sometimes

called Lower Belmont Bay, is located at the end of bumpy Belmont Road. Once you get here, even if you’re a

little worse for the wear, you’ll find the crystal-clear water and the beautiful palm trees are well worth the effort.

The white-sand beach at Long Bay West is one of the most beautiful in the BVI. Joggers run along the water’s

edge, and spectacular sunsets make this spot perfect for romantic strolls. The Long Bay Beach Resort stands on

the northeast side of the beach, and it’s popular to book a table overlooking the Caribbean.


From beach-shack eateries to decadent restaurants, Tortola is the culinary hub of the BVI, offering residents

and tourists alike the freshest seafood plucked straight from the sea and seasoned with authentic West Indian

culture and spice.

You can indulge in pink salmon and plump shrimp canapés served beachside at the Sugar Mill Resort on Apple

Bay; revel in pure Island zest at Quito’s Gazebo with chicken rote and pumpkin fritters; feast on appetisers such

as tender beef carpaccio or grilled Portobello mushrooms at Brandywine Bay; or drink at Pusser’s Company

Store, where Pusser’s famous rum freely pours like the sea outside, complemented by traditional English pub

food.

Other popular social venues include The Willy T (a floating pub), The Soggy Dollar Bar, Pirates Bight, Nanny

Cay Marina, Bat Cave aka Spaghetti Junction, Captains Table, Fat Hog Bob’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, Bitter

End Yacht Club, Le Cabanon and The Last Resort.

iii) Cayman IslandsThe beaches and open water of the Cayman Islands provide excellent opportunities for a range of enjoyable

activities including diving, snorkelling, swimming, sailing and fishing; and used equipment for new residents is

usually available at reasonable prices. Highly recommended are Stingray City and Rum Point.

Sports in Cayman

The following sporting clubs are well established and available for newcomers to join: Dive Cayman, South

Sound Squash Club, Cayman Islands Rugby Club, Cayman Islands Yacht Club, Cayman Islands Football

Association, Cayman Islands Cricket Association, Cayman Tennis Club, Cayman Badminton Club, Cayman

Roller Hockey, Cayman Ball Hockey Association and Darts League. Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman

Islands, also has three golf courses.


There are many interesting places to go out eating in Cayman. The local food and drink scene has continued to

evolve, giving residents a genuine smorgasbord of dining options, from high-end restaurants to local Caribbean

favourites.

Examples of popular locations include Sunset House, Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink, Thai Orchid, Seven

at the Ritz-Carlton, Ortanique, Gino’s, Mise En Place, Mizu, The Lobster Pot, Margaritaville, Rackhams, Hard

Rock Café, Da Fish Shack, Bombay Chopsticks, the Wreck Bar & Grill at Rum Point, Coconut Joe’s Beach Bar

& Grill, Lone Star and Decker’s Grille & Lounge.

Additionally, an air-conditioned multi-screen cinema in Camana Bay shows new movies and many of the hotels

provide evening entertainment such as live bands, comedians and karaoke shows.

iv) Channel IslandsGuernsey

Recreationally, Guernsey offers beautiful sandy beaches, picturesque cliffs and an active bar and al fresco dining
