Alternate Paths to Medication Administration Various routes of administering medi-cations will be presented during this courses as supplemental to diabetic education and safe medication adminis-tration and medication diversion preven-tion. Additionally, there will be discussion of medication administration based on body system, the medication and pre-cautions to be followed. Course Code: DHS180

Best Practices in Medication Safety and Prevention of Drug DiversionNarcotics’ tampering, known as “drug diversion” has emerged as the leading cause of provider-to-patient transmis-sion of several types of infections and harm to patients. This course will focus on best practices pertaining to medication accountability and security requirements. A review of security requirements will allow participants to identify areas at risk and the ability to follow best practice guidelines for medication safety and diversion pre-vention compliance in their facility. Bloodborne Pathogens and HazardCommunicationsProvides basic regulatory information related to bloodborne pathogens and infectious diseases. Additionally, it of-fers chemical hazard awareness while discussing the 2012 Hazard Com-munication Standard and the Global Harmonized System (GHS) of label-ing, pictograms and safety data sheet requirements. Discussion of issues and concerns pertinent to personal care homes will provide opportunity for awareness of policy, procedure and training requirements needed to minimize or eliminate associated risks. The use of personal protective equipment along with safe practice policies and plans will be included to verify or modify existing site-specific procedures or conditions. Emphasis is placed on site Exposure Control Plans and Hazard Communication regulatory requirements.Course Code: DHS158

Common Medical EmergenciesDiabetes, stroke, heart attack and choking are just some of the common medical diagnoses direct care givers must deal with in a PCH environment. This course will focus on the funda-mentals of providing aid to residents who may experience an emergency complication with these diseases.Course Code: DHS163

Diabetes Overview for Personal CareHome StaffThis course will be offered to personalcare home staff as an update and review of the care of residents with diabetes, as required by 2600.190b., and provided by a Certified Diabetic Educator. It will include diabetes up-dates, care and treatment options for residents with diabetes; instruction on the proper technique for administer-ing insulin, oral medications, and for recognizing signs and symptoms and corrective actions for hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia. Prior experience administering oral medications and insulin in a personal care home setting within the last year is preferred.Course Code: DIABS106

Developing Effective Program Services for Residents with Dementia-Related Disease Explores the impact of an increase in the aging population in relation to needs, available resources and quality of care. Principles of care are integrat-ed with day to day tasks of the super-visor and direct care staff persons in a personal care home setting. Course Code: DHS114

Documentation ExposeLearn the rights of medication administration, medication administra-tion audit tools, and how to spot and stop falsification of MAR. The impor-tance of prescriber follow-ups, DME and completing the RASP in a timely manner while keeping confidentiality of records. Course Code: DHS131

Fall Safety and Prevention of Injuries The newly revised 29 CFR1910 Sub Part D is the standard related to workplace walking-working surfaces. Discussion of this standard will be viewed from two major categories; the hazards associated with falls at the same level; and haz-ards associated with falls from elevated surfaces. Discussion includes maintain-ing a clean workplace, providing safe access to and egress from any horizontal or vertical surface on or through which a person walks, works, or gains access to a workplace location. Through a review of the standard, awareness of regulatory responsibilities will provide understand-ing of the requirements pertaining to sur-faces inside facilities as well as on orga-nization property. Focus of all discussion will center on the primary purpose of this standard which is to provide adequate protection from falls by addressing con-ditions in the personal care home and other on-property building structures.Course Code: DHS110

Fire Safety Awareness for Per-sonal Care Homes Train-the-Trainer Enables ssupervisors or designated staff members the ability to provide awareness level information and tech-niques that will allow the employees to identify and assess fire hazards and threats. It will further provide informa-tion that will guide appropriate action to control, diminish and or eliminate fire hazards and threats. Emphasis is placed on safety for all actions taken. Infection Control and Wound CareStudents will learn the fundamentals of infection control with a focus on the personal care facility resident. Con-tent includes transmission of infections and blood borne pathogens, role of immunizations, and practices to keep residents and staff safe. Course Code: DHS130

Managing Challenging Behav-iors in Personal Care Homes Designed to inform the participant how to recognize potentially aggres-sive or violent situations as it relates to the personal care home environ-ment. Methods to verbally mediate or diffuse aggressive behaviors will be discussed and explored. Emphasis will be focused on avoidance of physical restraint or touching of individuals involved. Employee safety will be dis-cussed within a challenging environ-ment of regulatory responsibilities that can include self-defense options and interaction with local law enforcement, PA Department of Human Services, and OSHA. Recognizing that each facility and circumstances have unique challenges, this course will provide a variety of methods to consider and employ in order to achieve the desired outcome for all stakeholders. Meaningful Activities-Person Cen-tered and Group BasedThis course will outline the guiding values of person-centered care in their personal care home. Students will learn how a person-centered approach to service delivery is done in a way that is respectful of and responsive to the preferences, needs, and values of residents. Basic skills will include core values of compassionate care for older adults in the personal care home setting. Course Code: DHS133

New! Strategies for Ensuring Proper Placement in a PCH Outlines strategies for ensuring proper placement of residents in a personal care home setting. Strategies will include evaluating licensed personal care homes on quality, comfort, and affordability. Class discussion will in-clude the process for finding the right personal care home for the resident. Emphasis will be on person centered services where programming is de-signed to meet the specialized needs of each resident. Course Code: DHS181

Teaching Strategies – Interest-ing Ways to Fulfill Annual Training RequirementsThis course will outline strategies to plan and execute a comprehensive operational training program that sup-ports initial direct care staff person training. Students will examine a train-ing program that fulfills personal care home regulatory requirements, and recruitment of qualified staff to provide internal training and cross-training knowledge transfer. Personal develop-ment programs will be discussed to promote staff personal development goals.Course Code: DHS183

Working with Residents with Intellectual and Mental Health ChallengesOutlines the specialized needs of personal care home residents who also have intellectual disabilities or have mental health challenges. Class discussion will address a detailed description of intellectual disabilities and mental health disorders, and how they impact service delivery within a personal care home. Discussion will include how staff must be sensitive to these specialized needs in the delivery of services. Course Code: DHS182

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONSDo the hours spent in diabetes education provided by a Certified Diabetes Educator count towards administrator and direct care staff annual training hours?Yes, all three (3) hours of class may count toward training hours.

Is lunch provided with the training?Lunch is not provided and restaurants are not always located near the training site. Please pack a lunch, if applicable.

Can I leave early and still receive my certificate?As per the Department of Human Services, anyone arriving more than 15 minutes late or leaving the class for more than 15 minutes at a time, will NOT receive a certificate.
