Workshops: 6th November, 2013
First Announcement
Mumbai attractions
Gateway of India
Mumbai's most recognized monument, the Gateway of
India, was constructed to commemorate the visit of King
George V and Queen Mary to the city. It was completed in
1920 and remains as a striking symbol of the British Raj
era. After this era ended in 1947, the last of the British
troops departed through the Gateway of India.
Elephanta Caves
The Elephanta Caves are a network of sculpted caves
located on Elephanta Island, 10 kilometres to the east of
the city of Mumbai. The island, consists of two groups of
caves—the first is a large group of five Hindu caves, the
second, a smaller group of two Buddhist caves. The Hindu
caves contain rock cut stone sculptures, representing the
Shaiva Hindu sect, dedicated to the god Shiva and are
hewn from solid basalt rock.
Prince of Wales Museum
The Prince of Wales Museum of Western India is the main
museum in Mumbai. It is located in the heart of South
Mumbai near the Gateway of India. The museum houses
approximately 50,000 exhibits along with Indus Valley
Civilization artefacts, and other relics from ancient India
from the time of the Guptas, Mauryas, Chalukyas and
Rashtrakuta.
ISKCON Temple
The Hare Rama Hare Krishna Mandir, commonly known
as ISKCON Temple, overlooks the skyline of Juhu in
Mumbai. It is among the most visited temples dedicated to
Lord Krishna. Founded by Swami Prabhupada in 1978, the
temple is spread over 4 acres. The architectural splendour
of the ISKCON Temple is worth-seeing. Both, its interior
and exterior walls are adorned with murals and sculptures.
Marine Drive
The highlight of Marine drive is the beautiful promenade
along the road where many of the citizens take in a breath
of fresh air and view the setting sun. At the northern end of
Marine Drive is Chowpatty Beach. A lot of celebrities live
here, making it one of India's premier residential
community. Marine Drive is also known as the Queen's
Necklace because if viewed at night from an elevated point
anywhere along the drive, the street lights resemble a
string of pearls, forming a necklace. It is the major
attraction in Mumbai city.
