Employment rate = 74.8% (all time high, since 1971)

1.54m unemployed (down 152,000 a year)

Unemployment rate = 4.6% (lowest since 1975)

70.2% of women aged 16-64 in work (vs 79.5% men)

- highest since records started in 1971

- partly caused by equalisation of State Pension age; fewer women

retiring between ages 60-65

- in 1971, only 53% of working-age women in paid employment

688,000 unemployed women, down 86,000 y/y.

Rate = 4.4%, lowest since Sept 2005

UK government estimates “gender pay gap” at 18% (Nov 2016)

- difference in average earnings for men and women

- describes this as “lowest ever”

Cited causes of gender pay gap:

• Women more likely to be in lower-paying industries

• Women more likely to work part-time

• Women less likely to be promoted to senior roles
