UP or down; in or out; big or small...oppo-sites is our new theme for the next twoweeks as it is a great way to improve ourvocabulary.

We even got tomake our own ‘opposites’book, where we drew tall and short trees, red and green robots, girls and boys or fullbuckets and empty buckets in it, and lotsmore.

And what an exciting thing we saw onFriday morning when the rain turned intosnow crystals.

We ran outside and tried to catch themon our jackets and jerseys and saw whata beautiful pattern they have. But one mo-ment theywere there...and then theyweregone. Hey! Another opposite: gone andthere.

approved by council.A while back, management put a request before

council to escalate this amount to R800 000.This request has not been approved by council

and a close watch will be kept on who funds theadditional expense. Ratepayers cannot be expectedto fund this exorbitant cost.

SIR,A couple of months ago, there

was a fascinating exchange re-garding recycling in which it wassuggested that the municipalityestablish a recycling depot to getus in linewithmore forwardthink-ing towns.

But this was met with hysteriaasthereapparently issuchaplace. All well and good, but if an envi-ronmentallymindedpersonwantsto get rid of their glass products, theyare forced to take themtoPie-termaritzburg themselves...a sys-temthatdoes little todiminish thatperson’s carbon footprint or en-courage careful disposal.

Could any kind person or estab-lishmentshedlightonanypossiblechanges or alternatives to thisrather dissatisfactory system andperhaps once again outline thepreferred means of disposing ofour daily debris in the least envi-ronmentally offensive way?

THERE are ten children andGogoNeli in theMkhize family- some of the young ones areher grandchildren, whilstothers have no other home.

Gogo receives a pensionand six child grants but witheleven people to feed, clotheand school, this is just notenough and they do struggle.

Two of the little ones are inGradeRandthanks to theLet-cee Abahambi programme, are copingwell. As part of theprogramme, Phume of Letceewould visit to sing, tell stories, dance. Therewould be toys tochoose and play with and shewasoftenaccompaniedbythecommunity facilitator. As aresult, Gogo has seen a realimprovement and develop-mentwith theyoungsterswhocan read and write, havelearnt to listen and be re-spectful aswell ashelpingGo-

go with the chores.Through the Abahambi

programme, one of the olderchildren who refused to go toschool was encouraged to dosoand isnowahappy learner.

From the Gogo’s point ofview, she says she has alsolearnt how to handle the chil-dren, learnt to playwith themand take care of them -all thisthrough the Letcee pro-gramme.

Gogo Neli was also having

a problem with accessing agrant for one of the children;the biological mother hadgone away with the child’sbirth certificate so Gogocouldn’t apply for the grant.Phume passed the issue on toZandile and then to Letceestaff. Kitso came and visitedand helped sort out the prob-lem and now the grant is be-ing received. Family has alsobeen helped by the Letceegarden motivator whoshowedhowtobuildavegeta-ble bag, providing spinachand carrots for the family.

Gogo was also helped byLetcee to obtain a grant foroneof the childrenwhosebio-logical mother had disap-peared with the child’s birthcertificate.

Please note that the nameshave been changed to protectthe identity of the family.

How Letcee helps the community THE Greytown Gazette publishesa Shadow Column at the end ofeach month to list events to comethroughout the year. Themain ob-jective is to notify the public ofwhat events are scheduled to takeplace, or about to, to avoid, as faras possible, “double dating” - thatis two events on the same daywhich could create problems notonly for the organisers but also forthe public.

An appeal therefore goes out toall Churches, NGO’S, sports bod-ies, clubs etc. to submit dates andevent details to the Greytown Ga-zette for publication as soon aspossible. From now until the endof the year there are so manyevents social, sporting, prizegiv-ings etc, so please notify eitherverbally or electronically in timefor the next Shadow column.

Cambridge Assessment chiefexecutive, Simon Lebus, madethe announcement at twoCambridge International Examinations Principals Forums inCape Town and Johannesburg.

The new timing will enablethe release of results to alignmore closely with university admission deadlines, particularlyin the southern hemisphere.

The agreed results dates forthe next three years for Cambridge International AS and ALevel are as follows:

• November 2014 series 21January 2015

• November 2015 series 13January 2016

• November 2016 series 10January 2017.

Although we are prioritisingthe early release of CambridgeInternational AS and A Level results, the results dates for Cambridge IGCSE will also bebrought forward.
