SPONSOR OF THE MONTH:

HILLSIDE FEED & SEED Five generations of the Sanders family have been involved in Hillside Feed and Seed since 1959. They can be found at 1805 S. Hillside, Wichita, Kansas, less than 2 blocks from where the store was first built in 1949 at 1623 S. Hillside. You can still park near the front door, come in and shop, and get your purchase carried to your car by one of the staff. HSF&S may have modernized the phones and cash registers a little, but good old-fashioned courtesy is still important to them! They’ve been in this neighborhood a long time, and they hope to stay a lot longer. Their plan is to do this by offering fair prices, good products and advice you can trust. When you visit their store, thank them for their ongoing support of the neighborhood.

ANIMAL ISSUES

There have recently been reports of dogs running loose in the neighborhood and complaints of animal waste being found in front yards. You can probably blame some of it on the raccoons from Dry Creek, or dogs that get loose and run unsupervised. But you can also blame some of it on dogs that are being walked by owners who allow them to take care of their business and leave it behind. If you are walking dogs in the neighborhood please do what some of the dog walkers in the area do. Take a couple of plastic bags from the grocery with you and use one as a glove and one as a bag, collect your dog’s waste, and toss in the trash when you get home. Some owners just take their dogs for a walk without a leash, which is in violation of the City’s leash law that prohibits pet owners from letting dogs run loose. You may know that the duplexes on Roosevelt between Osie and Countryside have had their mailboxes moved out to curb because of a loose dog incident that happened several times to the mail carrier in that area. When that happens several times a year the USPS requires the residents to put their mailboxes near the curb or get a post office box. This same problem has occurred in several of our surrounding neighborhoods. A recent occurrence was on south Terrace in the Meadowlark neighborhood. The USPS placed flags in theyards of the nieghbors whose boxes they claim need to be moved to the curb, However the flags contained outdated or wrong information, The bottom of the relocted mailbox should be 41” to 45” above the ground level behind the curb and the front end of the mailbox should be 6” to 8” from the back of the curb. It will be interesting to see how this vicious dog incident unfolds in that neighborhood. The best thing that can be done is for neighbors to be diligent and report loose dogs to animal contrl at 911. Keep the hounds under control and you can keep your mailbox away from the curb. A pet cat was recently hit and killed on Roosevlet, and that brought up the question “What do you do, if you’re the one that hit the animal?” It was surpring to find that City oridance Sec. 6.04.035 addresses that issue:

( 4) Every operator of a motor vehicle or other self- propelled vehicle upon the streets and ways of the city, except emergency vehicles, shall immediately, upon injuring, striking, maiming or running down any animal, notify the Police Department (911) of the location, and the Police Department will notify such agency as may be providing injury services; If you see a dead animal, domestic or wild, lying in or beside the road, call Animal Control at 350-3360 and they will remove the carcass. __________________________________________________

NEW NEIGHBORHOOD MAPS County commissioner Jim Howell has graciously supplied some large maps of our neighborhood areas that will help with newsletter distribution and neighborhood cleanups. Thanks, Jim! __________________________________________________

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP

SCHEDULED FOR MAY 2 This year’s Neighborhood Cleanup will be a co-operative effort between the Grandview and Meadowlark Associations. Both cleanups are scheduled for May 2 There will be a centrally located skid where neighbors can discard large amounts of debris and there will be a number of packer trucks running in both neighborhoods If you are affiliated with a Scout Troop, a part of a Church organization, a student needing community service to fulfill your educational program, or just a neighbor who wants to help out please come to Tuesday’s meeting and sign up. ______________________________________________

DOWNED LIMBS After the recent wind storm and a long talk with the Forestry department it was explained that if you had a City

Tree (one between the sidewalk to the street) with fallen branches they will be picking them up soon, but please don’t grab branches from other trees in your yard aand add them to the city’s tree pile as they can tell the difference and it isn’t right. Those are the property owners’ responsibility. ________________________________________________

HOW FAR DO WANT TO WALK? For those of you have been in the neighborhood for a while, you’re bound to remember the Indoor Mile at the old Wichita Mall. Although that offered the luxury of being able to go walk year round, it went away with the conversion of the Mall to office and meeting spaces. At the request of some clever neighbors, and spring upon us, the City’s Park department has placed signs in both the Grandview Heights and Meadowlark parks stating hour many laps around the sidewalk equal a mile. If you take 8.8 laps at the Grandview Park you’ll go a mile. If you take 8.6 laps at the Meadowlark Park you’ll go a mile. Thanks to the neighbors for this idea and the City for its quick placement of the signs.
