Year 6 Transition to High School
Year 6 students will begin their transition to high school with a visit from a Griffith High School teacher on Friday morning. Miss Ridgway will provide information about high school and they will have a chance to ask questions. This is one of several visits this term.
Staying Safe Online
Last week the Life Education unit for Years 3-6 focused on staying safe online. Online bullying or cyberbullying is engaging in bullying behaviour using technology such as the internet or mobile devices.
Online bullying is different from other forms of bullying:
It is more likely to happen outside school.
Harmful material can be shared quickly and long after the first incident.
It can happen anytime, day or night.
It is more difficult for children to defend themselves or get away.
Online bullying might include:
sending abusive text messages and emails
posting hurtful or threatening material on social media like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, or on gaming sites
imitating or excluding others online
inappropriate comments on pictures of others
threatening another person to do something such as sending revealing images.
Students learnt to identify some of the hazards of social media such as lying about your age to open an account. You are breaking the terms and conditions of Facebook if you have an account under the age of 13 years. So if people lie about their age on social media, what else do they fake? A friend should be someone you have met personally.

In The Classrooms?
K/1/2 News
In maths this week we are learning about multiplication and division using equal groups and rows. Later in the week we will be discussing graphs. In shared reading we are focusing on discussing the characters and what they are like. When reading with your child ask about the characters in the book. In personal development and health we will be doing follow up activities from Healthy Harold.
Mrs Robertson
3/4/5/6 News
In English 3/4 are focusing on information texts and how they are written in a different way to other text. We are learning the importance of diagrams, captions and pictures to get our message across. This week we are recognising different fractions, reading and counting by fractions and determining equal parts of a group. In science, students will begin to present their research on water, wind, glaciers and humans as factors in erosion. Our library lessons will continue to look at the features of Australia and the 3-6 students will begin their research on 3 different places. It is great to see so many students participating in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. They are all keen to read as many books as they can.
Mrs Young
5/6 Literacy and Maths Groups
The 5/6 students participate in a variety of literacy activities each morning including studying a new ‘word of the day’, a grammar activity, independent reading, a sustained writing activity and reading with the teacher.
In maths, this week we are looking at expressing mixed numerals as improper fractions and vice versa. We will also look at adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator. On Thursday and Friday, the whole class learning focus will be connecting three-dimensional shapes with their nets.
In creative arts, the students have been learning about Aboriginal art. This week’s art lesson involved the students designing and creating their very own dot painting. Dot painting is a relatively new form of Aboriginal art originating in the Alice Springs area in the early 1970’s.

The whole class reading text this term is Wonder. This beautifully written book encourages all students to ‘choose kind’ and to see the world through another person’s perspective. So far, the students have enjoyed reading this story and completing learning activities related to this text.

We wish our Zone Cross Country team all the best for this event. The zone cross country is being held this Monday 4 June at Lake Wyangan. Participants will continue training at school. Students may like to bring runners to school to train in.

the day. They did a great job organising, training and assisting on the day. Your assistance was great.
Our hearts were thumping and our legs pumping as Brooklyn ran for the try line. She scores the try just as the full-time siren went off. The final score, Hanwood 1 and Small Schools 2. Consequently, this close win meant we made it into the finals. At the end of our third game, unfortunately Tyesha got a cramp in her leg. Brooklyn was dummy half and Tyesha was first reserve. We ended up losing in the final to a strong St. Patricks team. The final score 10 – nil. Brooklyn was awarded the best and fairest player for the small schools team and got a NRL boot bag as a prize.
Tyesha’s nickname from the day was Foxy because she would not let them through the gaps and Brooklyn was Bull Ant because she was red as a bull ant after she scored her try. Our first game was at 10:30am and we were there at 9:00am so we met all our other teammates. There was Molly, Sophie, Erica, Juliet, another girl called Sophie and there were more but we cannot remember all their names.
We enjoyed playing league tag on 24.5.18. Thank you to Mrs Robertson and other organisers for giving us the opportunity to represent small schools league tag.
Brooklyn and Tyesha
On Thursday 24 May Kadon, Tevita, Charlie, Dylan, Jarrod, Jye and Dusty went to Jubilee Oval to play in the Mortimer Shield. We were in the Griffith Small Schools team. In our first game we played Beelbangera and it was a 10 all tie but we won the game because we scored first. In our second game we played Griffith East
PS and we lost 20 to nil. It was our biggest beating of the day. In our third game we played Yenda and during the game is was 6 all but in the last play, the worst thing possible happened, Yenda scored and won the game on the bell. It was a very long day but we all had fun and we did very well for a team that only met twenty minutes before the first game. We would like to thank David Williams, Clint Robertson for coaching us and Mrs Liddicoat for organising it for all of us.

Premier’s Sporting Challenge
Our school has registered to participate in the 2018 NSW Premier’s Primary School Sport Challenge. Goolgowi School has participated in this challenge since it began over 10 years ago.
The purpose of the Challenge is to encourage students to participate in sport, games and physical activity and to have more students, more active, more often!
Participation in this event also brings funding to the school for sporting resources such as equipment and coaching.
Over a ten week period our whole school, including staff, will be monitoring physical activity completed during class time, at recess and lunch and during sport. Outside school hours activities (after school and weekend) will also count towards the Challenge award.
The challenge will run in Weeks 6-10 Term 2 and Weeks 1-5 in Term 3.
Each student in Years 3-6 will be issued with a Challenge logbook to record their physical activity.
Term 2, Week 5 Tuesday 29 May 2018
