    I. Introduction

    Plot

Galahads Memories proposes a 2D platforms-simple puzzles combination, where the player is

in charge of modifying the environment while he travels through the memories of an old

artist, Galahad. In his mind, the most important experiences of his life adopt the shape of

paintings. However, for an unknown reason, his memories seem to be altered and you must

restore them with the help of his magic brush.

The main objective of the game is to go through all the levels and get to the end to find out

Galahads tale. There are neither high-scores nor a control of time, except for some time-

attack phases. Nonetheless, it is possible that here are hidden secrets in the levels.

    Boot

The game has been developed with the game engine Unity3D, so, a start window will open

when you execute the game, where you will be able to set the game definition and graphic

quality. Is it recommended to employ a rather powerful computer for the highest specs. The

game can be played with the keyboard or with a gamepad, being this last one recommended.

In this manual we have specified the gamepad controls employing an official XBOX 360

    controller.

    III. Gameplay

    Moving

    Walking and jumping

Left, right and jump upwards. Typical, right? There are floors and walls, and most of the

platforms are solid and well delimited, although some are floating and are only solid from the

top. Some paints will allow to make wall-jumps (V. Paints and enemies).

    Jumping downwards

On the floating platforms, a jump downwards

can be made pushing the movement control

    downwards and pressing jump.

    Wall sliding

On the walls, by defect, the character will slide downwards. If a

jump is down close to a wall, he will also slide upwards. Sometimes

this will come handy. To stop sliding, you just have to move a few

    instants to the opposite direction.

    Page 8

    Painting

    Painting platforms

When painting the platforms, these acquire different properties, and allow to move in various

ways and reach places that otherwise would be unreachable. Floors, walls and special

platforms can be painted (V. Paints and enemies). The fast stroke allows painting the floors

while walking; keeping pushed the paint button after advancing a few steps. By defect, the

platform immediately under the character will be painted, and not forwards, although it

usually affects the adjacent. You can paint in any direction during a jump, and to the wall

    during a wall-slide.

    Solving puzzles

To advance the story there are puzzles to solve painting. By solving them, the objects of the

paintings take life and allow the player to make progresses through the level.

They are parts of the paintings that are colorless or incomplete. In these puzzles, the paints

colors fulfill a different function. Here, the colors function depending on the image being

painted, representing different elements (V. Paints and enemies).

Only the wright colors will produce a reaction, while the wrong ones will not work and event

restart the puzzle if its composed of multiples pieces.

These puzzles, as the game advances, become less trivial, giving the fact that sometimes they

require order or even a given time to complete them.

    Page 9

    Attack and erase

To erase the paint on a platform, floor or wall, the

attack/erase is to be used. It isnt totally necessary in the

platforms, as you can paint over the previous color with

another, being the last one the only which affects the

    character.

This same button is used to attack the abominations that

occasionally youll find in the levels, whose only use is

nothing but to annoy you. But be careful, some of these creatures are invulnerable and deadly.

    Health and death

Galahad has three health points. When he loses them, a

death animation will show and he will re-spawn at the last

checkpoint. Some enemies make only one point damage,

making the character invulnerable for a few instants, but

other represent an instant kill. To fall off the painting or

from big heights is also deadly. There will also be traps,

detailed at V. Paints and enemies.

    Pause and skip

At any moment of the game, you can press the button specified at IV.

Controls and interface to pause the game and open the pause menu ( II.

    Menus).

Besides, during some scenes that block the characters control, it is also

permitted to skip them pressing two times the SKIP button (IV. Controls and

    interface).

    V. Paints and enemies

    Paints

Into Galahads palette, there are basic and special colors. Basic and special colors are unlimited

once theyre obtained, but while the basic colors are useful in every world, special colors can

only be used in specific times and worlds. Each world will have a precise special color, which

will be used in addition to the basic colors.

Both kind of colors will have a platforming function and another for the narrative puzzles. Each

color gives the platform different properties or activations, while on the narrative puzzles,

each color obeys a particular semantic that associates the color with an element of the

    memory.

    Basic Colors

    Blue

Perfect for fast strokes, the blue paint increases by 2 Galahads speed

when he walks on a platform painted that color. These platforms give

Galahad so much momentum that hell need to decelerate for a whole

    second to stop completely.

Walls painted blue will also allow sliding with no friction, both up and down, but also

preventing wall-jumps, unless the wall is painted red or yellow.

Effect in the narrative puzzles: The blue represents liquids, water, rain, sky and the sea.

    Red

It endows with elasticity the hardest superficies, duplicating the jump height

when Galahad jumps from a platform that color. When falling from the air on

a red platform, the character will always rebound, but with a variant

intensity: if at the moment of the rebound the player keeps the jump button

pressed, he will make a double jump again. If not, the rebound will be of a

    normal jumps height.

The walls painted red will allow the character to perform a wall-jump from them with a great

impulse, twice as normally. However, the jump direction will be almost perpendicular to the

    wall.

Effect in the narrative puzzles: The red represents fire and heat.

  • Galahads Memories: Instruction Manual October the 10nth, 2012

    Page 14

    Yellow

This paint is used to give consistence and viscosity the platforms. With similar

effects on the walls and the floors, it keeps Galahad sticked. When it comes to

a floor, Galahad will advance very slowly, even if he was accelerated by

    previous blue painted platforms.

When Galahad jumps on a wall covered with yellow paint, hell get glued to it.

He then will be able to perform regular wall-jumps and also retro-wall-jumps.

Effect in the narrative puzzles: The yellow represents electricity, money and sand.

    Special Colors

The special colors will only have effect on the specific platforms of their type.

    Gray

Scattered through the level there will be many hooks. When

painting them gray, Galahad will stay hanged to them, being

capable of jumping from one to another and reach new heights.

Effect in narrative puzzles: The gray represents metal and

machines. Everything painted by this color will be mechanic and will

start functioning, or metallic and become unscathed.

    Purple

The special platforms of the level painted purple will become animated

and move according to a pre-established pattern, with fixed speeds and

    rotation points.

Effect in the narrative puzzles: The purple represents wind and

    movement.

    Page 15

    Enemies and other dangers

In the plane of memories, the paintings that represent scenes of Galahads life are starting to

get smudged. The drops of paint, as little daemons, move through the canvases and take life,

turning what in the past were clean strokes into confusing smudges of faded patterns. To this

little pests, Galahad gives them the name of Stains. There are also other elements, like Leaks

and Smudges, that obstruct Galahad, but in a more passive way.

    Stains

Generally, the enemies wont be affected by the environment nor the paints used by Galahad,

and only some will receive damage from the character.

    Basic Enemies

All basic enemies hurt the character when touching him. Theyve got simple IAs and usually

wont react to the characters presence. There are two kinds of basic enemies:

Flyers: They move flying or floating through the scene with a pre-established

    pattern.

Prowlers: They move one side to another in a pre-established route or

until they get to the platforms limit.

  • Galahads Memories: Instruction Manual October the 10nth, 2012

    Page 16

    Static Dangers

They are elements that block the progression of the player and harden the challenges hell

have to face. Some of them can be erased by the player, while others are part of the level

elements and are indestructible, forcing the player to always avoid them.

    Destructible

Smudges: They keep still in the scenario and can easily be erased by

Galahad, just as the Stains, and inflict the same effects when in

contact to the character. They are usually in the way of an important

    jump.

Collapses/Meltdowns: The Alzheimers in its entire splendor. They

produce Stains and can be dissolved after a few attacks.

    Indestructible

Leaks: Represented by dark and faded zones, theyre like

smudges but bigger and more dangerous. They cant be

erased and the characters mind will get so blurry that hell

have to re-spawn at the last checkpoint (lethal damage).

Drippings: They generate drops at a fixated pace. These drops clean the

plaint in the platform they fall on, and they also damage the character.

Mines: They will explode a few seconds after the character gets close to

them, and after a while, will respawn.
