I. Executive Summary

Young Volunteers Celebrate the Fourth Annual Global Youth Service Day in 127 countries!

At a time when terrorism and war continues to impact the lives of people worldwide, millions of young people continue to set new records for volunteerism and community service. Global Youth Service Day has managed to become, since launching in 2000, the largest celebration of young volunteers. Millions of youth around the world highlighted the power of volunteer service, from Albania to Zambia and from Korea to Peru.

The goals of Global Youth Service Day are to: • Recognize the year-round contributions that

youth make to the development of their communities through volunteer service;

• Mobilize youth and adults to support the needs of their communities through volunteering & mentoring

• Recruit a new generation of volunteers Global Youth Service Day grew out of the successful experience of National Youth Service Day, held annually for the past 15 years in the United States, which mobilizes millions of young people in service projects each April. National Youth Service Day and its new global format are the inspiration of Youth Service America (YSA), a resource center and an alliance of 300+ organizations working to increase the quality and quantity of opportunities for young people to serve locally, nationally, and globally.

Global Youth Service Day is organized and managed by YSA and the Global Youth Action Network, together with a consortium of international organizations and over 125 national coordinating committees. General Motors and the Inter-American Development Bank, were the primary sponsors of this year’s event.

Highlights of national level activities from Global Youth Service Day 2003: [see section IV for a complete list]

II. International Coordination On the international level, an International Coordinating Committee (ICC) that consists of national and international youth-serving organizations oversees Global Youth Service Day. These organizations help to promote the celebration of Global Youth Service Day through their networks of affiliates, partners, local offices, and grantees around the world. ICC members also help to provide modest financial and in-kind resources to support the development and implementation of GYSD at the global and national level. The ICC holds monthly planning meetings or teleconferences to discuss the project’s development and promotion, progress with new partner organizations and National Lead Agencies, fundraising efforts, media outreach and many other issues.

III. National Coordination On the national level, Global Youth Service Day is coordinated by National Lead Agencies (NLAs). As a general rule, a single agency or organization is designated as NLA. In this capacity, the organization provides a focal point for the distribution of GYSD-related information and news to other organizations and young people throughout their country. It is the responsibility of the National Lead Agency to recruit other youth organizations onto a National Coordinating Committee (NCC) that helps coordinate activities in one or more locations on GYSD. The NCC shares the workload and responsibility of the National Lead Agency, increasing youth participation in the events and leading the national efforts towards achieving broader community impact.

Qualifying criteria for National Lead Agencies include national scope and outreach capacity, strong relationships with other youth-serving organizations in their country, multi-sector partnerships and a commitment to carry out the effective coordination of GYSD. NLAs are sent supporting materials including GYSD Planning Toolkits, brochures and posters, a Service-Learning Curriculum Guide, a sample fundraising document, a contact list of all participating organizations, sample language to promote GYSD within their network and newsletters, and a press release to modify and distribute to their local and national press. They are also added to the GYSDNews list-server to be kept up-to-date on GYSD-related progress.

SASEF and the Luanda International School (LIS) celebrated GYSD 2003 by adopting and partnering with a Luanda Barrio school. After three months of very hard work, and a difficult selection process, the search was narrowed to two schools. LIS evaluated the needs of each school, and the rural school systems in Luanda as a whole, and decided to donate Educational Kits. These kits contain basic tools for a student to better participate in their education such as pens, pencils, erasers, paper, and mini notebooks. This project is only the beginning of the GYSD celebration; there will be an ongoing relationship created with the barrio school. Not only will the kits be donated on a regular basis, but the LIS school will take part in the Netaid project of "The

Real Life Game Most Kids Can't Play" beginning on the 30th of May through September 2003. The participation in GYSD has generated a great deal of community interest and ideas of service for these young and privileged youth. Many of the students identified the volunteer organizations their parents support and completely understood why their participation is crucial to community development. A GYSD 2003 Hero is Luis Alberto who took part in the Bom Dia Mama Project at a local luanda project. Mr. Alberto is a 20 year old student attending the 10th grade at Vida Abundante School, located in Luanda and received his award after sharing his story of why he believes in community service to the entire student body at LIS.

[email protected] IAVE Japan celebrated GYSD activities in Aichi and in Tokyo. In Tokyo, they coordinated a GYSD executive committee, which consisted of university students who had many chances to go abroad for volunteer work, but little chance to volunteer in their city. The committee planned two main events. One was focused on education in elementary school, and another was skills-training. They visited and held classes at the elementary school in Aichi on the theme of global and social challenges. In another class, about 60 children (in 6th grade) participated. Phuan, an organization which supports Thailand’s NGOs, collaborated in this event. IAVE plans to have more than three classes like this and to collaborate with more educational organizations as a result

of the experience. Some university students made their own volunteer groups and learned about leadership and facilitation, which proved to be very effective for group management and NGO capacity-building. It provided a good chance to hear advice from volunteer specialists. IAVE accepts about 30 people a month to this seminar and they plan to continue this event once a month during the year. In Aichi, they held a party to help young people learn about many kinds of volunteer projects which were organized. They invited youth volunteer leaders form each category who shared their experiences. All the participants discussed “what it means to volunteer”.

The activities proposed as part of the celebration were promoted in person by Mr. Majed Al-Ali, who circulated an official paper to all schools in the State of Kuwait at different stages to participate in GYSD with the rest of the world. The schools displayed the activities of their students in differentways. But unfortunately the celebrations coincided with the circumstances of war on Iraq, which affected much of their activities to a large scale. Accordingly the Ministry of Education closed all the schools and ordered the students to remain at home for two weeks in April, afraid of the danger that the students faced as a result of incoming fire from Iraq, including rockets falling on Kuwaiti soil on a daily basis. Still

the schools proved the efforts of their students at different levels of activities in the first and the last week of April. In the middle of April, there was a holiday because of the war circumstances. The most important activities and programs, which were organized by the school to celebrate GYSD 2003 were as follows: schools participated in an artistic exhibition to display the students’ products and achievements, they arranged different seminars, lectures and workshops for youth, organized different visits for several youth organizations and held an artistic competition among schools. It is difficut for the NLA to supply the statistics about the participants due to the negative reflections of the war circumstances on the nature of their work.

The city of Warri, Delta state, Nigeria carried out the following activities: a march for peace and AIDS awareness (at least 30 people marched), and a football match for peace. The activities were limited due to political elections in Nigeria around the time for the celebrations and this coincided with the planned lecture on peace and conflict resolution. Due to the elections, it had to be cancelled. Another limitation was that the city of Warri had been engaged in serious inter-tribal conflicts just two months before this year’s GYSD celebration. This led to millions of

properties destroyed and thousands of lives impacted, which limited the number of participants in GYSD. The football match was honoured with the the distinguished Chairmanship of Miss Mirjam Vloedgraven (Holland) Volunteer Aid Program Manager. This was highly successful and remarkable due to the efforts of two football clubs. POLAVIS and TOPSTAR Football Club of Warri, Delta State, participated in the GYSD celebrations. Approximately 60 people were actively involved in the celebrations from different institutions and organisations and many people were reached by the celebrations.

The media was contacted prior to the celebrations, which covered the events in both the electronic and print media, raising awareness among young people who were not able to attend the activites. As part of the celebrations, youth organizations presented past projects, as well as projects to be implemented, including soup kitchens, Placing Billboards with GYSD logo, producing a monthly newsletter, organizing student debates about current issues etc. Young people visited Hope House, which serves HIV/AIDS patients in the community, then visited orphanage

residents, built houses for the elderly and organized sporting activities and refreshments. In the Southern Region of Swaziland, three schools participated in a food collection event, with 10 students each and 20 community members. They limited the number to 50 participants because of lack of funds. SPAR supermarket donated food hampers and participants were allowed to take whatever they wanted without limitation, and ended up with food worth US$300. Swaziland United Bakeries provided 2 dozen loaves of bread. Another supermarket, Builders Supermarket and Hardware, gave food worth US$200. SOS Children Village supplied the transport to the homes for distributing the food hampers. They managed to reach 12 families through the collection. This year they were addressing the hunger that severely hit Swaziland. At present 144000 are suffering from hunger, with 60% of the population living below poverty line. Although GYSD was a one day event, it made the difference to these people.

[email protected] In Sweden, the GYSD celebrations were carried out by ECPAT - Sweden. Following a training weekend in November, 2002, young people became peer facilitators with ECPAT focusing on educational issues and racism, multicultural perspectives and dialogue. The training was followed by a series of lectures across the country about the issue of trafficking of children for sexual purposes. During April alone, at least 100 young people were educated about child trafficking. From 11-13 April in Sodertalje, an exhibition was mounted called "children of the world" by the Red Cross, in cooperation with an exhibition by ECPAT Sweden. The Red Cross exhibition was a result of a research trip by 18 students from the Red Cross Folk High School and was about street children and children in the sex trade indsutry.

GYSD was highlighted during this event and the exhibition went on during the 3-day weekend, with approximately 400 visitors each day. In Stockholm, Homework Aid for Children was arranged by the Red Cross. One volunteer from ECPAT Sweden participated and talked to the children about service and GYSD. At the Stockholm Solna Kultur Centrum (Cultural Center), information was provided to immigrants about GYSD and Swedish culture. A party on Saturday night was held to celebrate GYSD with people from many cultures. Dance, music and food. It was a combined GYSD and birthday celebration since there were two younger persons that had their birthday. An article was published in the Cultural Center's monthly magazine and the event, which was filmed, may be shown on local TV.

[email protected] In Taiwan, the National Youth Commission has been working concertedly with 7 regional volunteer centers to encourage young people to observe the needs of their communities and initiate volunteer service programs by themselves, with effective promotional efforts being made via various channels like designated website, printed posters, mass media, schools, NPOs and student clubs. In so doing, they hope to mobilize more young people to help make a better world through their caring hearts and concrete actions. In March 2003, after 7 GYSD regional training programs conducted across the country, teams of youth volunteers began to address communities needs for which they really care by bringing solutions to a wide variety of issues, including: care for the elderly, orphans and stray dogs, rebuilding and developing a positive spirit at school, protecting the environment, human rights education, personal development for children or teens, care for foreign residents and foreign laborers, projects for community revitalization in suburban areas, clean-up campaigns for communities and on beaches, and so on. Altogether, over 15,000 youth participated in approximately 615 service nationwide, with countless more young people reached

through media campaigns (TV, radio and newspaper) and related GYSD activities. One of the highlights of this year’s GYSD programs has been a round-the-country cycling relay. With the participation of 500 volunteers in total, this promotional activity for GYSD has won enthusiastic support from 25 city mayors and county magistrates. It has also enjoyed significant media coverage around the country, with more then 50 reports on ideas and activities of the GYSD in the newspaper during this 10-days campaign. They also invited Steven Solomon, an American volunteer currently leading and coordinating several community service programs in South Africa with Jane Goodall Institute, to share his service experiences and exchange views and visions of life with Taiwan youth. In light of the particular challenges imposed on various parts of the world this year, due to the outbreaks of SARS and War, apart from the original concept of “Youth Changing the World”, they also put a special emphasis on ”Sharing Love and Stimulating Transformation through Service”.

[email protected] Millions of youth in every state in America celebrated the 15th Annual National Youth Service Day and the 4th Annual Global Youth Service Day, on April 11-13, 2003. National Youth Service Day is a program of Youth Service America, with the National Youth Leadership Council and PARADE Magazine. The State Farm Insurance Companies Foundation is the Presenting Sponsor of National Youth Service Day. Fifty Lead Agencies across the country convened city, regional, and statewide celebrations of National Youth Service Day, engaging hundreds to thousands of youth in their area. Eight statewide celebrations demonstrated the growing scale of National Youth Service Day (2002 marked the first-ever state-wide celebration in Minnesota). The State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Award and the AT&T CARES Youth Service Action Fund provided 150 teachers, students, and organizations with funds to support their service and service-learning projects for National Youth Service Day and throughout the year. Service-learning is a powerful methodology that is transforming education and service across America by engaging volunteers in meaningful service through integration with established curricula and learning

opportunities. Grant-winning projects ranged from a Wahiawa, Hawaii elementary school that organized a

Special Olympics competition as part of their studies of different disabilities, to social work students at the University of North Texas who held focus groups to determine how to better serve communities with special needs. High school students in Seattle, Washington opened their computer lab to senior citizens and helped them improve their

computer skills and research areas of interest on the web. Second-grade students at Forest Glen Elementary School in Green Bay, Wisconsin improved their writing skills by penning letters to members of the armed forces in the Middle East. National Youth Service Day 2003 generated an unprecedented amount of media coverage – over 310 million media impressions through 1,000 stories. An unprecedented number of elected officials at the local, state, and national levels

participated in projects, spoke at events, issued proclamations, and delivered public service announcements for NYSD. Now more than ever, it is important to engage members of the media and elected officials to build the will to support service and service-learning.

IN A WORLD AT WAR, MILLIONS OF YOUNG PEOPLE COME OUT TO VOLUNTEER FOR PEACE

Global Youth Service Day 2003 Mobilizes Youth in over 125 Countries to Rebuild Communities, Break Down Ethnic Barriers and Increase the Peace Through Community Service

New York and Washington, DC – April 8, 2003 – From Kuwait to the Philippines to Afghanistan, from Argentina to Ghana to the United States, millions of youth in 127 countries around the world are organizing community service projects and special events to celebrate the 4th Annual Global Youth Service Day (GYSD), April 11-13, 2003. While the war rages on in the Middle East, countries like Lebanon, Qatar and Israel are coordinating volunteer projects with massive numbers of participants, including Kuwait, where the Ministry of Education has mobilized hundreds of schools to participate in volunteer activities that will mark the day. Young people around the world are responding this coming weekend to terrorism, war and ethnic violence by focusing their efforts to eradicate hunger and homelessness, address problems in their communities and resolve conflicts. Young volunteers are mobilizing en masse to mark this year’s GYSD. Global Youth Service Day was launched in 2000 by Youth Service America, a nonprofit organization that started National Youth Service Day in the U.S. in 1989. National Youth Service Day events will be held during the same three days and are sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation. GYSD is coordinated internationally with the Global Youth Action Network as its key partner. GM Foundation is the sponsor of GYSD, with help from the Inter-American Development Bank. “Countries around the world are beginning to recognize young people as assets, tapping into their amazing energy, commitment, and skills to solve problems,” said Steven A. Culbertson, president and CEO of Youth Service America. “Young volunteers from different geographic, socio-economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds are organizing service projects, public awareness campaigns, and forums that tackle some of society’s most intractable problems,” Mr. Culbertson added. “Young people represent a dynamic force of creativity and change,” said Benjamin Quinto, International Co-Coordinator for the celebrations and Director of the Global Youth Action Network. “GYSD creates a remarkable opportunity to exemplify the power of a generation uniting its efforts to build a better world,” Mr. Quinto added. Among the many projects that will be organized around the globe are the ones listed below. VI. Communications Global Youth Service Day represents an unprecedented worldwide organizational network that advances opportunities for youth to serve their communities. Maintaining communication among organizations within the network poses both a great opportunity and a significant challenge. The following structure continues to improve communication among GYSD participants & organizers. WEB SITE: http://www.gysd.net

An on-line information center and clearinghouse for the celebrations, allowing participants & web visitors to access promotional materials in different languages, ideas for projects, international and national level contacts. The web site also includes details on how to get involved, past event highlights, a place for organizations to post their planned activities and find out what other organizations are planning. Media releases and endorsing statements are also available, as well as an interactive discussion-board to promote greater communication and collaboration among GYSD participating organizations.

E-MAIL: [email protected]

The majority of interested organizations first initiate contact with the organizers by sending a message to [email protected], and inquiries receive prompt response from the project coordinators.

EMAIL LIST: [email protected]

This address is used as the primary communication vehicle for keeping participating organizations informed on GYSD-related news and progress. All announcements and documents are initially sent via this address. All NLAs and ICC members are automatically subscribed and interested people/organizations are immediately invited to join. NLAs should invite their NCC members to subscribe to the list.

DISCUSSION FORUM: www.gysd.net/discuss

A discussion board on the GYSD web site allows participants to exchange views and opinions, engage in discussion and share details about the progress of their organizing. The discussions are available for anyone to read, but only registered users may post or begin a thread.

PLANNING TELECONFERENCES: ICC meetings

Each month, members of the International Coordinating Committee participate in a meeting and/or conference call. This forum is used to provide updates on the progress of GYSD, as well as to make requests and announcements to the group. This forum also helps to inform and enhance the participation of ICC members in the development process.

VII. Funding

Funding for the development and distribution of materials, as well as the coordination of Global Youth Service Day, came from the following: General Motors Inter-American Development Bank

In the past planning grants have been provided (ranging from US$500-US$2,000) to National Lead Agencies to support the efforts of the National Coordinating Committees and help defray costs of the activities planned. Due to funding constraints, mini-grants were not distributed this year, which posed a significant challenge for many organizers, particularly those in developing countries. At the national level, there were many examples of National Coordinating Committees mobilizing in-kind and modest financial resources to carry out their GYSD activities from corporate sponsors or government agencies.
