o We must engage communities

and the legislature to enact policies that

promote a comprehensive approach to youthpolicy.

o An investment in our young people NOW is aninvestment for the future of our communities.

o Access to quality programs help keep youngpeople safe and stable so they can make gooddecisions and produce positive outcomes

their communities and it is through

youth service programs they are able to be part of

the solution.

o As our state and country focus on creating jobs foradults, we must not forget about long-term

investments in essential services for our youth thathelp them become productive, contributingmembers of society.

Key Messages

1. Start off on a good foot.2. Treat the legislative staff with respect.

3. Never lie or make up information.

4. Be sure to give the legislator the folderwith all of the relative information in it.(pick up at registration)

5. Put your issue in the context of the legislators own district.

6. Go into the meeting assuming the legislator will support yourissue.

7. Use strong language when describing your feelings or efforts.

8. Allow the legislator a chance to respond, listen carefully totheir advice and dont interrupt.

9. Be understanding of the complex pressure upon legislators.

10. Never criticize another legislator, lobbyist or the opposition.

11. Dont burn bridges!

12. Send a written follow-up note.

o Be firm in stating your views,

but also be considerate and be

reasonable, factual, and friendly

o Be sure to commend them when they do somethingright.

o Whenever possible, refer to bills and resolutions bynumber

o Follow up regardless of the position they take; send a

brief letter of thanks or restate your position

Adult Facilitators

o Prepping your youth

Tell them about the purpose and help them

understand how they fit into the big picture.Talk them through the days agenda

available activities, etc.Talk to them about what to expect in a

meeting with a legislator

Help them practice telling their story abouthow these youth services have changed theirlives.

Organize the group outside of thelegislators office

Give very brief Rally for Youth FAQ Introduce the youth and invite them to share

their personal stories about how these youthservices have changed their lives

Thank them, direct them to more info in their

folder, and invite them to attend the rally at12:00 in the Rotunda

o After the meeting, remind all

youth to stop at the Great Hall

and write a thank-you note to the

legislator

o Fill out both the Legislator Meeting Evaluationand event evaluation form and turn those in atthe Great Hall

o If the legislator had any questions that you couldnot answer, be sure to include that info on theevaluation.
