As a team, the Tribe fin- ished second behind St. Paris Graham for the team title. The Falcons scored eight district titles and had 242 points. Wauseon had 112.5 and Clyde was third with 106 points. Nicely and Krall each won district titles. “The three wrestlers we did qualify had outstand- ing tournaments,” said Wauseon coach Mike Ritter. “Dalton and Zane were both district champs and Wade was a strong third. That’s the first time we’ve had multiple district champs in the eight years I’ve been here. I’m so proud of those guys.” Nicely scored a fall in 2:26 to open the tourna- ment, then reached the semifinals with a 6-4 sud- den victory win over Luke Cramer. He added a 9-4 decision over Shelden Struble of Bryan and a 6-5 win over Cameron Campbell of Sandusky Perkins to claim the championship. “Dalton had a pretty tough road to the finals,” said Ritter of Nicely. “He had to face two wrestlers who he’s faced before, but have always wrestled him tough. He rose to the oc- cassion and then cranked it up a notch in the finals.” Krall opened with pins in 31 seconds and 5:21 to reach the semifinals. It took a tough 5-2 win over Tyler Carrow of Medina Buckeye to reach the fi- nals, where Krall dis- patched Billy Ward of Clyde with a 12-4 major decision. “Zane had a really tough semifinal match against a kid from Medina Buckeye,” added Ritter. “He won an overtime match to put himself in the finals against a top-two ranked wrestler from Clyde who was undefeat- ed. Zane just crushed him.” Hodges lost in the semi- finals then battled back to take a third-place match, a 6-2 win over Dalton Howard of Edison. “Wade lost a close match to a Bellefontaine wrestler in the semifinals,” continued Ritter. “He bat- tled back to win a match at the end of regulation in his go-to match, then beat a returning state qualifer from Edison to take third.” Zach Morrow (120), Cody Pontious (126) and Aaron Scheutte (160) all wrestled in fifth place matches. “Even with all those heartbreaking losses, we finished the tournament as district runners-up,” fin- ished Ritter. “To do that, it was a total team effort. We took 12 kids to the tourna- ment and each and every one of them played a big part in our second place finish. We haven’t placed that high at a district tour- nament since 1996.” Wauseon’s Zane Krall (facing) won the district championship at 220 pounds. Wade Hodges defeated Nick Bergman of Oak Harbor in a 5-3 sudden vic- tory on his way to a third place finish and a trip to the state meet in Columbus. Only two lead changes inentire gameBy NORRIS LEDYARDExpositor Staff Writer

The Lady Blackbirds lead early andoften over the Toledo Area AthleticConference champion Green Bears fromOttawa Hills. In the end, Pettisville wonan overtime thriller, 44-38 to advance insectional play over Ottawa Hills. The six point lead Pettisville held late

in the fourth quarter melted away likethis winter’s snow as the Green Bearsmounted a 10-6 charge to a 36 all tie inregulation. From there, Ottawa Hills’ offense

sputtered to only two foul shots in theovertime period as Kaitlin Nofziger hittwo field goals and a free throw to ad-vance the Lady Blackbirds.“This is a good Ottawa Hills team we

faced tonight,” said Pettisville headcoach Jason Waldvogel. “It is a game ofruns and the Green Bears really camealive down the stretch. This win is ameasure of our team defense.“Ashlyn Bontrager did an exceptional

job on their leading rebounder (6’ HaleyJarecki). She can easily grab 25 re-bounds a game and Ashlyn did sometough work tonight. Lexie King, LaurenFrey and (Audra) Klopfenstein all did aterrific job inside against a talented op-ponent.”When the action could have gone in

favor of Ottawa Hills, Tanner Hostetlerwas down on the floor and batted theball to her teammate to break up a po-tential steal in the third quarter. The in-stinctual team play of experienceshowed for the Lady Blackbirds at bothends of the floor.“These players understand how to

play the game and how to play as ateam,” said Waldvogel. “This is tourna-ment play and the play is more physical. My staff has confidence in all our play-ers. We were prepared and came outahead at the end.”While the Lady Green Bears won the

opening tip to regulation play, theycould not cash in on the opportunities. The Lady Blackbirds maintained defen-

sive pressure on the ball and limited theGreen Bears to too many one-and-donetrips to their basket. By the time OttawaHills head coach Sean Mercer could calltime, the Lady Blackbirds jumped out toa 13-3 lead with 3:30 left in the firstquarter. The Lady Green Bears responded

with a trey and a lay up from AllieDewire to close the spread to 13-8. Abucket from Caroline Arnos and a bankshot by Allie Dewire made it 13-12.Pettisville continued to grind out their

motion offense, with King and Nofzigerscoring, and tough defense to gain a 6-0spurt to move ahead of Ottawa Hills, 19-12. Klopfenstein drained a free throw tomake it 20-15. Arnos launched a halfcourt toss and was fouled to gain accessto the charity stripe. She only hit thesecond attempt to close out half timewith the score 20-16.Nofziger hit two buckets and Tanner

Hostetler made the front end at the freethrow stripe to stretch the LadyBlackbird advantage to 25-18. MeganHealy countered with four points forOttawa Hills to close the gap to 25-20 atthe end of three periods. While the score surged to 32-26, the

Lady Green Bears continued to findways to score and come up with sometough stops to draw within a singlepoint, 32-31. Bontrager hit both of herfree throws at the 3 minute mark tomake the score 34-31.Arnos immediately drained a deuce to

draw Ottawa Hills within one, 34-33.Dewire committed her fourth foul andsent King to the foul line. She missedboth attempts. At the other end, NancyRumpf jacked up a three ball to giveOttawa Hills their first lead, 36-34 with2:12 left in regulation.Nofziger eventually hit two free

throws with 45.6 seconds left to tie thescore. The Lady Blackbirds appliedsome pressure at half court and disrupt-ed the Green Bear offense to a one anddone with a big rebound by Nofziger. Her last second attempt was off themark which led to the overtime period.Nofziger led all scorers with 20 points.Bontrager chipped in for eight points

and King scored six.“It was quite a game tonight,” said

Mercer. “We continued to make upground and really pushed the scoredown the stretch. There is a lot of fightand persistence in our girls and my staffis very proud of their efforts.“It is tournament time and we did get

in some foul trouble. We dressed 14players, so we did have enough to sendinto the game,” said Mercer. “We lost alot of our front line players, so we had to

adjust our game plan.”The Ottawa Hills teams had spent the

last two years in Division III competi-tion and have just returned to DivisionIV.“This is a tough sectional to go

through, with teams like Pettisville,Hilltop and Stryker,” said Mercer. “Wefought valiantly and came up short.”The Lady Blackbirds play Edgerton

EDGERTON - Delta’s swing through the GMC start-ed with a 59-50 loss to Edgerton on Thursday. The winby the Bulldogs gave them their first 20-0 regular sea-son in school history. One bad break that hurt the Panthers came in the

waning moments of the third period. Down by two,Delta was playing for a potential trying shot. Instead, they turned the ball over and Brody Flegal hit a trey atthe horn that put the Bulldogs up 43-38.“We want the last shot,” explained Delta coach Cory

Sprow. “Those are those big buckets at the end of quar-ters. We’ve got to finish quarters out. We needed thatlast shot. Whether we make it or not, we keep it out oftheir hands. We keep it a two or three point game in-stead of five.”The last big run for Edgerton came at the free throw

line. Up by four, Edgerton’s Ben Riehle and JacobAdams split free tosses to start the run. Adams added athree point play, and technical foul free throws fromNathan Stark were good to extend the lead. Start addedone more three seconds later and the lead was up to 56-44 with 2:14 left to play.“We answered quite a few runs,” added Sprow. “The

lead went back and fourth a little bit. It seemed like wewere always a possession down. They made the last runand we didn’t capitalize and we didn’t get our shots tofall.”Delta got baskets from Garlinger and Green late but

it was too late as Edgerton finished a perfect seasonwith a 59-50 win.

led the way for Delta. Heronly five points on thenight came in a quickspurt that allowed thePanthers to pull away.“Kirsten did a great job

on the defensive end,”said Delta coach RyanRipke. “Offensively, she'sour floor general. Wewant her out there asmuch as possible.”Haley Timmons did a

great job keeping Tinorain the game. She scoredtwo baskets in the paintlate in the third period topull her team back againstDelta.“That surprised me,”

admitted Ripke about theoffensive play ofTimmons. “Everythingthat I have seen and heardis that she isn't much ofan offensive threat. Shewas tonight. It's not shedid it against a smallergirl. Hats off to her, sheplayed a good game of-fensively and defensive-ly.”The play of Victoria
