TRANSCRIPT
To love the Lord God above all,
to love our neighbors as ourselves
and to live out our Baptismal covenant
so that we build a community transformed by the love of
Jesus Christ.
From the Rector In his weekly email to the clergy of the
Diocese, Bishop Rickel said that his visitation
to St. John’s was a great day. Thank you to
everyone who helped make it so. We had
four baptisms, twelve confirmations and a
celebration of the gift of the church to the
world, along with fabulous food, an
incredible turnout and gorgeous music and
worship.
In June, we will welcome Bishop Rickel
again to St. John’s, and with him, the Most
Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the
Episcopal Church.
Bishop Curry will be in the Diocese from
June 14-17, and you might want to attend
two special events.
On Thursday night, June 14, Bishop Curry
will be preaching at Evensong at St. Mark’s
Cathedral in Seattle. We’ve chartered two
buses and the 112 total spaces available
are filling fast. Use the sign-up sheet in the
Parish Hall or call the church office to
reserve your spot. The cost is $15 per person
(round trip), and the buses will leave at 4:30
p.m. sharp to ensure that everyone has
good seats at the service.
On Saturday morning, June 16, 10:30
a.m., Bishop Curry will join us here at St.
John’s for a conversation facilitated by
Bishop Rickel. Bishop Curry will be able to
share his experience of being part of the
Royal Wedding. I am sure he will also want
to share his thoughts on the Jesus
Movement and our Episcopal Church’s role
in that movement.
A festive reception with both bishops will
follow. This event will certainly be standing
room only, so plan to arrive early.

We are honored to be chosen to host
Bishop Curry, and we will certainly roll out
the red carpet!
In local news, I’m pleased to announce
that St. John’s and St. Christopher’s,
Steamboat Island, have jointly hired a
youth minister who will start in June. Alex
Flannagan will be working eight hours each
week, splitting his time between St. John’s
and St. Christopher’s. We expect that the
youth group will meet every other week at
St. John’s (with the group at St.
Christopher’s meeting the opposite weeks).
Each quarter or so, the two churches will
have joint events.
St. John’s also welcomes two other new
staff members. Lisa Norton joined us as the
Parish Administrator, and Pam Tinsley will
serve as our ministry intern.

Lisa is engaging with vigor the steep learning curve
that church work entails!
Pam is in discernment for ordination in the
Episcopal Church and will be with us at least until the
end of the calendar year, maybe longer. Bishop
Rickel asked us to help her explore her calling in a
vibrant ministry setting. I’ve asked Pam to work
specifically with the Pastoral Care Committee, making
calls and helping to manage the paperwork for
licensure of that ministry. I also asked her to preach
and participate in the liturgy and explore the
possibility of a women’s retreat weekend in the Fall.
An introduction to each new staff member begins
on page 1.
Thank you for being a part of this community of
faith. Through your witness and ministry, you’re helping
to make the Kingdom of God known here on earth
every day.
I can’t wait to meet and engage with the members
of your congregation and community. My wife
Harmony, puppy Charlie, and I are excited for our
new adventure in Olympia. Harmony attended
Evergreen College and graduated with a BS in
ecology and BA in sustainability. Charlie is an 8-month-
old black lab/shepherd mix and a very sweet pup.
We’re currently in the process of packing and getting
ready to move. I can’t wait. See you soon! You can
reach me at [email protected].
Introducing Alex Flannigan, Youth Minister
(continued from page 1)
Christopher’s, I plan to provide consistent program
and leadership to further engage the youth in both
churches. Youth can expect an incorporation of
music, community, the outdoors, and discussion,
along with activities and excursions.
I served a joyous 10-year career at the Diocese of
Olympia’s Camp Huston, most recently as assistant
director, before feeling a call to newness and
change. The opportunity to continue to serve
Diocesan youth and utilize much of my skill set and
experience is a wonderful one. While at Camp Huston,
I became a trainer for Safeguarding God’s Children. I
trained 40 staff per summer to be Christian leaders for
350 campers. I also led workshops around the country
teaching the methods I use when designing
intentional and safe programs for youth. I particularly
enjoyed the chance to see other Episcopal summer
camps and conference centers, meet the staff, and
learn what makes each one somewhat unique.

school days and into college. I was blessed to make
amazing friends there that I am still close with today. I
studied at Green River Community College where I
earned my Associate’s of Arts Degree. From there, I
went on to graduate from City University in Tacoma
with a Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education and a
minor in Literacy and Reading. I was an educator for
over fifteen years and have been lucky to work in four
different school districts during that time.
This is my first role in a church in an official position—
I spent much, much time in my youth as a volunteer in
the church—and I am loving it!
My husband works just a half mile away. He is a
Fisheries Biologist for the Washington Department of
Fish and Wildlife. We live in Tenino with our three
furbabies—a Blue Heeler and two Mini Doxies! We do
not have any children but are the very proud aunt
and uncle of 15 nieces and nephews between the
two of us and four great nieces and nephews!
If we are not at home in our garden or pool, or
playing board games, we are either fishing or with our
families and close friends. We love music and can be
found singing and dancing most anywhere, especially
at live shows. The beach is our second home and we
take every chance we get to be on the water in our
boat or hanging out on the shore. In my spare time, I
love to cook and craft and sew—anything from
blankets to costumes to pattern design.
Working in Olympia is a dream come true for me, a
goal I have had since I was young. I am so excited to
be here and be a part of this wonderful group of
people at St. John’s. If I have not already met you, I

Fiesta Latina

offered me this opportunity to continue to discern my
call to the priesthood. You have probably noticed my
presence in the liturgy at both services, including
preaching. I am also part of the Pastoral Care team
and the Discipleship 101 group. I look forward to
connecting with the Women’s Spirituality group and
exploring the possibility of offering a retreat.
My home parish is St. Andrew’s in Tacoma. I’ve
called Tacoma home for the past 30 years. I relocated
from the East Coast when I continued my professional
career with Physicians Insurance in Seattle and my
husband Dave began teaching at the University of
Puget Sound. After 22 years, I finally listened to God’s
persistent call, which eventually led to my earning an
M.Div. from Seattle University’s School of Theology and
Ministry and to discernment for the priesthood.
I have already gotten to know a few of you
through various diocesan ministries, such as Diocesan
Convention, Daughters of the King, and Cursillo. For
the past five years, my ministry passion has been the
redevelopment of Cursillo to Come and See, Go and
Tell with its emphasis on evangelism.
My interests include gardening, hiking/walking,
reading, caring for our aging basset hound, and last –
but not least – spending time with family, including our
son John and his wife Katie, who also live in Tacoma.
I look forward to continuing to meet you all in the
days to come! I am regularly at St. John’s on Sundays
and mid-day Tuesdays, and on other days for
meetings or events. I would love to have coffee and
get to know you better. I can be reached at

American culture, will be held on Friday, June 29 at
5:50 p.m.
Plans are well under way for a wonderful dinner.
We need contributions of items and services to
auction. A sign-up sheet is available in the Parish Hall.
In the past, some of our most popular items were
not material things. Meals, trips, yard services, repair
services and massages have been among the great
items sold and we’d love to have these contributions
again.
We appreciate your support.

Education for Ministry
By Usrah Claar-Peck
Education for Ministry (EfM) is a study program for
lay people to become informed about the Christian
faith.
Using a seminar approach over four years,
participants study the Old Testament, New Testament,
church history, and moral and ethical aspects of living
our faith.
Study guides, textbooks and a facilitator are
provided for the 36 weeks of seminar each year. (EfM
is sponsored by the Diocese of Olympia, so tuition is
reduced to $375 yearly.) Currently the group meets
Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m.
The current first-year group recently spent a seminar
discussing Psalms, with some wonderful guidance from
Dr. Curt Sather. At the end of the class they wrote a
psalm!
Spring is telling the story of God
in the voice of the bumblebee.
Flowers proclaim God's majesty and glory
as they open to the light.
When the days grow longer
we delight in the world around us.
The yellow daffodil makes us sad
when we remember loved ones no longer with
us.
But the warmth of the awakening earth
reminds us that you are with us.
Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Praise be to God.
Come join us in study, theological reflection and
the experience of seminar life. Contact Usrah Claar-
Peck for further information (360-570-2211).

What Is Happening with the Busy Bee’s?
By Lin Hampton
The Busy Bees is a women’s group with members
from several churches here in the Olympia area. The
mission of the group is to assist local young women
and girls in need. The Busy Bees raise funds each year
through the June Jumble sale and the Christmas Faire.
The Busy Bees have contributed to:
• The YWCA STEM ( + THE ARTS) program
• Community Youth Services programs ( including
Rosie’s place)
• Brentwood girl’s home, where members volunteer
and provide school supplies, etc.
The Bees also helped with specific donations to
other local programs as needed.
This month, the Bees learned about the Family
Support Center – Pear Blossom Place here in Olympia.
Pear Blossom Place provides 24-hour shelter for families
experiencing homelessness.
The Bees meet monthly on the second Tuesday at 1
p.m. in the Guild Room at St. John’s. All are welcome
to join us. For further information on how you can join
us or support any of these programs, contact Ms. Mike
Flothe (president), 360-923-0445, or Lin Hampton

Library Ministry
By Janice Jackson
The June Jumble is coming! Thanks to Nicki Weeks
who volunteered to take on the organization, we will
be able to sell books to raise money for our library and
church! Please, all who have books, movies, or CDs to
donate, leave them in the Adult Library to the right of
the door as you come in. Any books are appreciated!
We are over halfway through the audit of our
library. We are making room for new books by pulling
books that have never been checked out, are old
and falling apart, or are marked in and damaged. All
the books that have been pulled will be offered at the
June Jumble. We are updating our lists at the same
time so you will be able to look for a book by title,
author, or Dewey number.
We have a new shelf of Great Courses that consist
of classes on various topics. Most of them include a
Guide book and a DVD of lectures. Come in and
check out the wonderful topics, which would be great
for classes or for personal study.
The PNACL (Pacific Northwest Association of
Church Libraries) Conference this year is June 22 and
June 23. Non-members are also welcome! It will be
held at the First Presbyterian Church, 114 SW 8th Street,
Corvallis, OR 73222. The full conference w/meals is $90
for members and $115 for non-members. The costs are
different for attending Friday only and Saturday Only.
Reservations after June 1 will add a $20 late fee. A list
of Authors attending and Workshops you can register
for are on the application. If you are interested, flyers
are in the Adult Library on the shelf to the left of the
door.
Potluck Update
Because of all that is going on, we won’t have a
potluck in June. All Friday potluckers are encouraged
to support and attend the Jazz Cabaret Dinner on
Friday June 8 at 7 p.m.
The next potluck is the 4th of July Barbeque. Watch
for details in the July-August Chronicle.
The Bookworm’s Nook
By Jenny Louden
Maybe it’s some sort of reverse effect of
participating in the church book study group, but I
seem to be reading very light stuff in my leisure time
these days. Anyway, we’re gliding into summer, both
on the calendar and in the weather, so I will
recommend a mystery that is quite without
theological or literary significance—though it has
been recreational for me.
I just finished G is for Gumshoe by Sue Grafton. I
have read a couple of her books in the past, but was
not much impressed by them. This one, however, had
me laughing out loud as I read, and often. Some of
her humor is on the racy side in this story, but I have to
admit, I found it to be amusing. The mystery itself
(really two puzzles woven together, which I find is an
intriguing plot ploy in such stories) is believable though
strange, and the characters are, I think, well drawn.

this information will be used as we move forward in
that process.
Thank you in advance.
