June, 1944 Sam Klotzman is at Fort Knox Kentucky

Private Sam Klotzman, widely know merchant and businessman of Montevallo is stationed at Fort Knox Kentucky, where he is taking his basic military training. After completing his basic training Pvt. Klotzman expects to enter Quartermaster School. Sam requests the Times to say for him; “While I am serving in the United States Army, my business in Montevallo will continue under the direction of Mrs. Klotzman. I wish all of my friends to know that I will greatly appreciate your continued friendship and patronage during the war period.”

June, 1949 Galloway in East - West

Montevallo baseball fans made a good turnout for the East-West games at Rickwood last Friday night. The chief attraction was to see our boy, John Galloway, pitch. He did, and turned in a masterful performance. It was in the second game of the double-header. The East team got four runs in the first three innings. That is where Coach Bob Hardy called on John to put out the fire. His efforts were completely effective. In four innings his opponents got 3 hits but were unable to turn them into runs. The West scored five to win the game. When a young pitcher can go into a spot like they put John in last Friday night and hold it without a bobble, it means that he is a really good pitcher. John is certainly among the top hurlers that have been produced by high school baseball in Alabama.

June, 1949 Victor Scott Buys Montevallo Motors

The transfer was made final last Wednesday. The sale to Mr. Scott included the business and equipment of Montevallo Motors and the building occupied by the same. CITY OF MONTEVALLO NEWSMayor’s Message...

Hollie C. Cost, Mayor

If you’ve ever doubted the brilliance, exceptionality, relevance or wisdom of our local youth, I urge you to considerthe following speech delivered during a recent City Council meeting by one of our Montevallo Middle School students in support of our non-discrimination ordinance:

My name is Olivia Gilbert . . . I am an 8th grader at Montevallo Middle School. I come here tonight to share why this ordinance is important for the youth of this community.

When given a chance to make things right, when given a chance to improve our community, when given a chance to change the way a child feels about their identity in a positive way, I feel it is crucial to take that chance. The people in this room have raised me. You have danced with me at Eclipse, you have eaten with me at Zapopan and the Tavern, you have watched me march at football games, you have allowed me to take care of your pets, and you have watched me grow. While raising me, you’ve also been raising all of my peers, my friends.

I have always felt safe in this community, but I watch my peers, my friends, struggle with coming out because they feel they are not in a safe environment to do so - afraid to come out to their parents, their teachers, and maybe even you.

This ordinance does more than it says. It gives my peers, my friends, a sense of safety and confidence that their identity will not change their rights as members of this community. You have raised me, but you have also raised my peers, my friends. So, take this chance, and show the children you have raised and will continue to raise that this community is a safe place for everyone, not just for those of a certain color, gender, or identity.

I come here tonight to share why this ordinance is important for the youth of this community. I am an 8th grader at Montevallo Middle School . . .

As Olivia demonstrated by her thoughtfully crafted and excellently delivered speech, our youth have a lot of important things to say, and we should be open to listening to them – especially when they may be saying something we disagree with or may not fully comprehend. The youth of Montevallo represent our community’s future. And, because of that, because of them, our future is truly bright!

THE LITTLE FREE PANTRY AT OAK & PLOWMAN

“Take what you need, leave what you can.” That simple thought is the idea behind the Little Free Pantry in front of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church (at the corner of Oak and Plowman streets, across from Montevallo High School). The Pantry, which looks like a miniature church, is mounted on a post. Its red doors are always unlocked, so you can take or supply food at any time day or night.

Little Free Pantries have been springing up across the country as part of a grassroots movement that seeks to address hunger and food insecurity. The LFP movement describes itself as neighbors helping neighbors, offering a community solution to an immediate and local need.

If you want to help stock the pantry, bring non-perishable food items (canned goods, dried milk, cereal, crackers, boxed pasta, and so on). If you need food, help yourself. And while you are there, check out the Little Free Library beside it. Both are sponsored by St. Andrew’s.

Want to put up your own Little Free Pantry? Go to www.littlefreepantry.org to learn how.

ValloCycleTHE MONTEVALLO BIKE SHARE

ValloCycleTHE MONTEVALLO BIKE SHARE

HOW TO WASH YOUR BIKE IN 15 MINUTESCleaning your stallion at least once a month will ensure your components function better and last for years to come. Washing your bicycle is easy, but there are a few components that need a bit more attention than others. To wash your bike, prepare the following items:

1. Bucket of warm, soapy water – bike wash is best, but car wash or dish soap work well too. 2. Rinse water – in the form of a garden hose or bucket3. Clean sponge – or a clean rag/towel4. Dirty sponge – or a dirty rag/towel5. Degreaser – WD-40 can work in a pinch6. Chain Lubricant – you can find wet or dry lubricants (dry is recommended for Alabama riding)

Our basic washing strategy is to WET, WASH, RINSE, then LUBRICATE

PREP – if you have multiple gears, place your front chain on the biggest chain ring, and your rear on the smallest. This will help clean the chain later and more easily remove the rear wheel (if you are so inclined).

WET – spray down your bike with a garden hose or some rinse water. The goal is to get off the large chunks of gunk without blasting out the grease from your bearings. Keep in mind most of the dirt is going to be on the back wheel, around the drive train, and on the underside of your bicycle.

DEGREASE – spray degreaser on your drive train. Apply liberally to the chain, front chainrings, and rear freewheel/cassette gears. Applying this on a wet bike allows it to set-into the dirt that collects on your drive train. Take special note to not spray it into your drivetrain bearings such as the bottom bracket where your pedals pivot through, rear hub on your back wheel, or the rear derailleur pulley wheels. Our goals is to remove grease from the external components of your bike, not to remove the needed lubricants inside delicate components.

WASH – use your clean sponge or rag to liberally douse and scrub your bike frame from top to bottom with warm soapy water. Often forgotten places include under the seat, between the front and rear forks, brake pads and calipers (on bikes with hand brakes), and under the bottom bracket. Wash your tires, wheel, spokes, and hub. Use your old/dirty sponge to go over the chain to pull off the old gunk (it can be fairly dirty). Use more degreaser if needed at this point. Pay special attention to your front chain rings and rear gears to get in between them and remove the gunk. Pull off the dirt from your rear derailleur and pulleys (they tend to get caked in muck).

RINSE – spray down your bike again to remove all the soapy water and remaining dirt.

LUBRICATE – dry off your chain (it should look shiny and new). Apply chain lubricant per the manufacturer’s instructions (usually one drop per link, for the entire chain, then a quick wipe off of the excess after it has penetrated the chain). Consider lubricating your brake calipers but be careful to not get lubricant on your brake pads or braking surfaces.

TUNE-UP – if you want to go a step further take out your wheels (if you have quick release hubs) and inspect them for debris in the tires. Carefully remove/pick out any thorns or rocks that could later puncture your inner tubes. Inspect your brake pads for the same debris. Look for signs of wear on the pads or the brake surfaces and replace if needed.

We welcome riders of all experience levels. ValloCycle is Alabama’s oldest citywide bike share. For more information visit vallocycle.org or contact [email protected]

ALABAMA’S PRE-K PROGRAM RANKED TOPS IN NATION

Empirical evidence clearly shows that a child’s early years lay the foundation for their cognitive, social, and behavioral abilities and largely provide the road map for their later life. If a child, for instance, is not reading at grade level by the third grade, studies show it is highly unlikely they will ever read at grade level. Children in poverty who are exposed to early learning programs are more likely to graduate from high school and earn more money than their counterparts who are not provided access. They are much less likely to need remediation in school subjects, as well. Most important to taxpayers, studies have also revealed that every $1 spent on quality early-childhood programs results in $7 to $9 dollars in future savings – a return on investment that anyone would envy.

Alabama’s Pre-K program, known as First Class, is consistently ranked as the best in the nation and a model for other states. The National Institute for Early Education Research has named it first in quality and noted that it annually meets or exceeds all 10 of the group’s standards. Harvard University is even working on a feature-length documentary about our Pre-K program and its achievements. Because of its success and the acclaim it has earned, the First Class program is helping Alabama shed its false, decades-old image as a state the does not prioritize public education, and it is showing the nation that we are leading the way in new and innovative methods of learning. For all of these reasons, I am excited that First Class will be available in an additional 107 classrooms located in 33 counties in the upcoming school year, and those numbers include schools in Shelby County.

Throughout my service in the Alabama House, I have been a consistent and enthusiastic supporter of the state’s Pre-K program and have voted each year to increase its funding and expand its reach. This year alone, my colleagues and I provided an additional $18.5 million to this most-deserving program, which is the largest one-time increase in its history and raises the overall First Class allocation to almost $100 million annually. And while there is much to applaud and celebrate about the Pre-K program, we must remember that even with these expansions, roughly 40,000 eligible four-year-old children still do not have access to First Class or its life-changing benefits. That being the case, we must ask ourselves why any child – regardless of race, background or their family’s station in life – should be denied voluntary access to the early academic boost the Pre-K provides. I will continue working to ensure these children are provided the same early childhood development, learning opportunities, and skills training as their contemporaries in other portions of the state.

And while Pre-K is certainly a feather in the state’s education hat, it is not the only education priority of the Alabama Legislature. My colleagues and I have also directed millions of additional funding toward purchasing new technology and providing additional technology coordinators so that students may be prepared to fill 21st Century jobs. School libraries received millions in additional funding, as well, which can be used to purchase both traditional hardbound books and digital materials, as well. Smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other technology commonly utilized in today’s

classrooms are forcing school libraries - and public libraries for that matter - to adapt, evolve, and change their focus. This additional funding will help speed that transition. The K-12 career tech initiative and the Alabama Community College System will also receive additional funding in the upcoming fiscal year because of the critical role they play in our workforce development and industrial recruitment efforts.

From our Pre-K emphasis to our K - 12 improvements to our world-class public colleges and universities, Alabama is making great strides in the education it provides, and I have confidence that we will continue to improve in every across-the-board metric and soon compete for the title of best public education system in the nation.
