Rumor has it that Lance Avery and Dylan Saul will serve

enchiladas between the misa and Compline at

StreetFest.

The peaceful, contemplative Compline service is

offered at 8 p.m. every Sunday, and will be the

concluding event of StreetFest.

Apple [email protected] o David

Little [email protected]).

Assumption of the Virgin Mary Mass

Faith Formation

Stewardship Reflection

As we reflect on all that St. John’s has provided for

the spiritual nourishment and growth of this precious

and wonderful Parish community over these many

years, we give thanks to all of the generations, past

and present. Their faithfulness in supporting God’s

work has given us an incredibly beautiful sanctuary

that inspires our worship, a parish hall that enables us

to deepen our fellowship with one another, facilities

inside our spacious building that support our many

ministries, and verdant grounds outside that offer a

peaceful invitation to all who wish to experience the

Christian life.

However, remember that St. John’s is not just the

sanctuary, the parish hall, and its verdant grounds. It is

you and me, all of us, called together to continue in

the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, proclaim the

Good News and serve Christ in all persons. In the

words of our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, “We are

part of something greater than ourselves.” And so, we

thank each of you for your faithful and generous

commitment of time, talent and treasure to the

mission of St. John’s. You are truly a blessing to the

abundant life and hope of this parish community.

May the Lord’s peace and blessings always be with

you.

Your servants in Christ,

Bible Study – Summer Break

By Deacon Terri Lolcama

The midweek Bible Study that meets on Wednesday

mornings at 10 a.m. will take a break in July.

Bible Study will resume August 3, to discuss and

discern the format for the coming year. Look for more

information in the bulletin and the Chronicle.

While you are relaxing this summer, how about

reading the Bible (cover-to-cover), check out a book

from our great church library or read Crazy Christians,

A Call to Follow Jesus by The Rt. Rev. Michael B. Curry,

Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church. Happy

summer reading!

If you have any questions contact Terri Lolcama at

[email protected] or at church at 360-352-8527.

Education for Ministry

By Usrah Claar-Peck

Many of us feel we are familiar with the Bible and

have a fair understanding of what it means to be a

Christian. Our knowledge may have started in

childhood and continued through regular or sporadic

church attendance. However, it has been said that

many of us are walking around with an eleven-year-

old’s theology, trying to face adult issues.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is designed to engage

intellect, curiosity, and reason into an in-depth study of

our heritage and current life as Christians.

EfM uses a seminar approach, incorporating

worship, independent study, and theological reflection

in a community setting of not more than 12

the treasurer, Denise Hammer. The Camp Michael

mailing address is: Camp Michael, c/o Denise

Hammer, 3906 Kingsbury Ln SE, Olympia, WA 98501

Thank you to everyone who volunteered for a shift

at the rest stop! You made our fundraiser a success!

Thank you to everyone who donated treats! The

hungry and weary travelers made many remarks

about being thankful for such a generous variety of

cookies and pastries to go with their coffee. Many of

the pastries and cookies were generously donated by

Wagner’s Bakery, Olympia. They have been true to our

needs for several years!

Matthew 25:35 sums it up best: "For I was hungry,

and you gave me food: I was thirsty, and you gave me

drink: I was a stranger, and you took me in."

Sunday School Is Out for the Summer

By Denise Hammer

June marked the final two weeks of Sunday School

for the year.

The first Sunday was very hot so the class celebrated

outside with sidewalk chalk art, stories and a cold Otter

Pop snack.

The second Sunday marked the official celebration

with the traditional trek to Lincoln Elementary School

for time on the playground. It was a small group, but

everyone enjoyed their time together. The class

returned to St. John's for communion and each child

present received a gift card to get an ice cream treat

from Dairy Queen.

Sunday School will resume in September!

participants. Guided by trained mentors, participants

spend four academic years exploring the Hebrew

scriptures, Christian scriptures, history of Christianity and

the meaning of ministry in current life.

In England, EfM is referred to as Exploring Faith

Matters; in the US, this exploration of faith matters is

used by multiple denominations to strengthen the

people in the pews.

Starting in September, the EfM group meets

Wednesday afternoons from 3-5:30 p.m.at St. John’s.

For further information talk to EfM mentors John

Guydish at 943-5472 and Usrah Claar-Peck at 570-

2211.

The enrollment deadline is July 15, 2016. Tuition is

$350 yearly (this is a reduced fee due to St. John’s

sponsoring the course). The fee includes texts, learning

materials and trained mentors.

Camp Michael Rest Stop Fundraiser a Success!

By Denise Hammer

Camp Michael is happy to announce that our rest

stop fundraiser was very successful!

The volunteers reported a high volume of hungry

and thirsty travelers visiting the Maytown Rest Stop.

Maintaining a supply of hot coffee and treats kept

everyone busy throughout their three hour shifts.

By Sunday afternoon, we shopped for additional

coffee. When the fundraiser wrapped up on Monday

afternoon, nearly all supplies of coffee, cookies,

doughnuts, cups and napkins were depleted. This high

demand travel weekend showed in our final results.

The final tally in donations was $1,349.86!

The fundraising is critical to the success of our

camp. So far, Camp Michael has gotten funding

requests for 16 campers not affiliated with a

participating Willapa Regional Ministry church.

Camp Michael has a tradition of never turning

away a child who wants to come to camp, but that is

only possible through your help. If you would like to

sponsor a camper, we welcome donations! Donations

may be made through the website,

www.CampMichael.org, or checks can be given to

her Birthday cards. Last, but not least, we’ll share cake,

ice cream, and juice with all the girls there and with

some of the counselors. Please call Jenny Louden at

754-1968 for directions to Brentwood if you need them.

Thank You St. John’s

David and I want to thank you all for the wonderful

farewell party on June 12 as I retired from St. John’s. It

was so good to see so many of you there to celebrate

our ministry together these past nine and one half

years.

Special thanks to the Events Committee for

planning the party. The food was delicious and the

cake was beautiful. Thanks to everyone for your love

and support over the years and the gift that Fr. R.C.

presented to us from all of you. It will be used for a

vacation to some wonderful location. Thanks to the

Altar Guild for the beautiful flowers, and the Piece

Keepers for their beautiful gift. And above all, to you,

the parishioners, thank you so much for the wonderful

memories that we have shared. We are thankful for

each of you and will miss you all.

God bless you as St. John’s moves onto new

horizons of ministry.

In Peace, Mother June+ and David

God will do the Rest

I asked the Lord to bless you

As I prayed for you today

To guide you and protect you

The Bees’ Buzz

By Jenny Louden

The Busy Bees want, first of

all, to thank all of those who

helped to support our

programs of outreach in the

community by purchasing

items at this year’s June

Jumble. Without you, we

could not do nearly as much to help older girls and

young women in need.

On June 14, the Bees held their June Luncheon to

celebrate the past program year (including the

Jumble) and to plan for the year ahead. We had a

good time (always the main aim of our lunches!) and

we talked about expanding our giving and increasing

the size of our group. We used to have over 20 active

members. Now just over half that size at most

meetings. We need young (or at least younger)

members. Please, if you have ever even thought

about becoming a Bee, do come join us in any of our

activities, and see how you like “Bee-ing”.

We elected a new Secretary and Treasurer at the

Luncheon. Sue Michie has been Secretary and Mary

Jane Adair has been Treasurer for many years. New in

those positions are Lin Hampton, Secretary, and

Sharon Ziegler, Treasurer. We expressed our

appreciation to all four of them.

Our next activity is a birthday party for Veronica,

one of the girls at Brentwood House, who will be 17.

We are meeting at Brentwood on Wednesday, June

29 at 1 p.m. to celebrate with her. She’ll get a gift

certificate for Target from our group, and we’ll all bring

Bookworm’s Nook

By Jenny Louden

An editor of the

magazine Christianity

Today, Philip Yancey has

written many books on the

topic of different aspects of

Christianity. One of his books

in our St. John’s Church

Library is The Bible Jesus Read. Having just completed

the first year of the Education for Ministry program

(EfM) here in our parish, a year that includes reading

most of the Old Testament, I was curious as to what

Yancey would have to say about it.

I was impressed! Rather than looking at the origins

of parts of the Bible or probable authorship, this author

focuses on the key messages in five parts of it: Job,

Deuteronomy, Psalms, Ecclesiastes, and the Prophets.

In examining these, Yancey looks at their primary

messages both in terms of what they must have meant

to their audiences in the past—especially when first

written and in Jesus’ time—and what they can help us

with in modern times.

If you are thinking of joining EfM as a first-year

student and not sure whether reading most of the Old

Testament will be worth your while (and it does take a

good bit of time), I would suggest you read this

interesting book. I think it will make you curious and

could help you decide to learn more, and EfM is a

great way to do that!

Monday Morning Crafters’ Picnics

By Jenny Louden

Some of the Monday Morning Crafters joined for an

enjoyable picnic at Tumwater Falls Park on June 6. A

couple of us (four if you count the dog and the baby!)

also walked along the falls afterwards. We plan to

picnic again on July 11 (not July 4!) and on August 2,

and we’ll decide soon where those picnics will be

held.

Do come and share your Monday mornings with the

Crafters when you can. We meet in the Parish Hall

every Monday at 10 a.m. Everyone is welcome. Just

bring something you’re working on, if you like. Or just

come and join our chatter—it’s always pleasant.

So when the road you’re traveling on

Seems difficult at best

Just remember I’m here praying

And God will do the rest.

May God Smile on you today.

We love you and we will miss you,

Mother June!

Outreach Rest Stop 2016

Saturday, August 6, 2 a.m., to Monday, August 8, 2 p.m.

By Sherry Sullivan

Calling For Volunteer Hosts. The Outreach

Committee will be recruiting folks for four-hour shifts to

serve coffee/juice and cookies/pastries to weary

northbound travelers on I-5 who stop for a break at the

Scatter Creek Rest Stop.

This is a much-appreciated public service for drivers

and their passengers (we get lots of grateful “thank-

you’s”). The main purpose, however, is to raise money

for charitable organizations in our community

stretched thin by the ever increasing demand for their

services.

Donations received from this Rest Stop will be

divided between the Union Gospel Mission’s Free

Dental Clinic and the Olympia Free Clinic (medical

and mental health services). Each clinic is the only

service of its kind in the entire South Sound region. The

work they do is a God-send for people in pain with

nowhere else to turn.

Please consider giving some time from your summer

to provide this much appreciated service—by serving

at the Rest Stop, baking cookies or providing other

needed supplies. You will have a good time putting a

smile on travelers’ faces and supporting medical and

dental services for those in need.

Contact Sherry Sullivan at 705-1974 or Allen Ziegler

at 357-8530 for information.

Texas 4000 Bicycle Riders arriving Thursday July 21

By Kathryn McLeod

On Thursday, July 21, our college friends from

University of Austin, Texas, will be bicycling to St.

John's.

Please consider hosting these Texas 4000 bicycle

riders for a night! We'll have a potluck dinner at St.

John's the night they arrive so bring your favorite food

and join us!

There will be a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall for

hosting during the first week of July.

“Texas 4000 for Cancer was founded by Chris

and Mandy Condit in 2004, both engineering

students at the University of Texas in Austin.

Diagnosed at age 11, Chris himself is a Hodgkin’s

lymphoma survivor. He conceived Texas 4000 as

a way to continue the fight against cancer by

raising funds for cancer research and sharing

hope, knowledge, and charity throughout the

continent. Chris felt that creating the longest

charity bicycle ride in the world, from Texas to

Alaska, would be an appropriate way to fight

the nation’s greatest disease threat.” Retrieved

from the organization history found on the Texas

4000 website: www.texas4000.org.

If you have any questions, you can contact Lou

Macmillan at [email protected] or Kathryn

McLeod at [email protected]. Thank you!

El Hogar

By Sue Michie

Thank you for your continued support of Arnol, our

second grade student at El Hogar, The School of Love

and Hope, in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

We have now passed the halfway point towards

our $1,800 commitment to help clothe, feed, house

and educate Arnol. Our check will be sent to El Hogar

in February of 2017 so we are doing very well this year!

The next Second Sundays are July 10 and August 14

when all loose change in the offering plates go to

support Arnol (as well as any dollars and checks that

have El Hogar on them).

We have been godparents to nine students at El

Hogar since I began serving as the St. John’s

representative in 1993. Out of those boys, three

dropped out during the first year they attended El

Hogar.

Our first student, Rigoberto Bobadilla, left the school

at age 18 to go to work after being a student for six

grades there. Our next student Emerson Lopez

Morazon graduated in 2008 and moved to the U.S.A.

Alan Dony Soto Martinez graduated from El Hogar in

2000.

Many do not make it through the entire program

and quit when they are old enough to get a job and

help out their families.

We followed the progress of our student Luis Miguel

Ramos Espinoza from 2002 through 2009 when he left

school to go to work. We sponsored Jaison Jahir Perez

Ordonez from 2010 through 2014 when he left the

school. We are now in the second year of sponsoring

Arnol.

Please keep Arnol and the other El Hogar students

and the El Hogar staff in your prayers.

10th Annual Cambodian Gala Dinner!!

Saturday, August 27, 5 p.m.

Please reserve August 27 for a fabulous Cambodian

dinner and gala celebration at St. John’s.

The program will include new photos from Tithia's

trip to Cambodia, a description of seed grant results,

and a brief overview of the ever-challenging political

scene in Cambodia today.

Your presence and financial support will insure that

over 45 desperately poor families in Cambodia will be

able to eat with a quarterly stipend for food. Three

families will also receive seed grants for start-up

materials or training that puts them on a path to self-

sufficiency. The beloved community of St John's is

sharing Christ's love across the globe, making a

positive difference, one family in need at a time. (For

more information see Tithia Sum or Sherry Sullivan.)

Little Red School House

Distribution Day of supplies and clothing will take

place Thursday, August 18, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at

Komachin Middle School, 3650 College St. SE, Lacey,

WA 98503. Volunteers may go online to register to help

out!

Also, we are still in desperate need of socks, at least

500 more pair. We will have a bin ready to receive

socks beginning in July. Money donations are also

welcome. Make check out to St. John’s and mark on

the memo line, Outreach LRSH sox.

StreetFest 2016 Is Coming!

On August 14, at 3 p.m., St. John’s invites the

Olympia community to join in the fun with free food,

continuous music and entertainment on a blocked-off

20th Avenue.

There will be piñatas at one-hour intervals, face-

painting, balloons, and other activities for kids, as well

as a giant game of checkers, and possibly a chess

tourney.

Experience has indicated that we’ll need lots of

canopies for shade, so anyone with tent-tops we can

set up for the afternoon, please contact co-chairs

Gerry Apple at [email protected] or David Little

at [email protected].

We’ll also need volunteers to help the BBQ team and

Events Committee prepare and serve hot dogs,

quesadillas, lemonade and ice cream.

This is a no-waste event, with the menu planned to

use only compostable paper goods and recyclable

packaging, in keeping with St. John’s Genesis

Covenant.

The Artesian Rumble Arkestra and various groups

associated with St. John’s will perform from 3 to 6 p.m.,

segueing into an outdoor Misa en Español with extra

music at 6 p.m., an enchilada interval, and finally,

Compline at 8 p.m.
