I want to thank all of the members and non-members who have already generously pledged to the Accessibility project. This reno-vation will make our church more welcoming for our members and others of the community. The church has also been blessed to re-ceive significant interest free loans from members so that the project can go forward at this time without outside borrowing.

As of this time, some of you have not returned a pledge card. We hope everyone will feel inspired to be a part of this new outreach. We are hoping to hear from you by

Pastor’s Post:

It’s June! I have discovered this community undergoes a significant transformation this time of year. Many Vermilionites have returned home from their winter hibernation in warmer climates. Others are making their pilgrimages to our town to enjoy their time in the wa-ter and on the shoreline. Our church building is now undergoing a significant transformation. As I write this arti-cle our preschool teachers are packing up their rooms. And while this is an annual tradi-tion of sorts, this time when they unpack it will be in different spaces.

The Accessibility Project is now ready to begin! This month a number of things will shift around in order to ac-commodate the transformation. We will be sending regular updates through our weekly e-letter to keep every-one informed as specific changes are known that will impact meeting spaces and more. With a good portion of our building being renovated over the summer, space will be limited for meetings. We will pretty much have the downstairs fellowship hall to work with. Please keep that in mind as you are scheduling committee and other meetings with Jen in the church office. Here are some of the bigger picture things we want you to be aware of: By the middle of June, the church office will be temporarily relocating to one of the recently vacated class-rooms. We expect to continue with our regular office hours: Monday, 9 am—noon; and Tuesday—Friday, 9 am—2 pm. The current elevator will remain operational until the new elevator is installed. The Preschool rooms are scheduled to be completed by early August and ready for the new school year. The Pre-school Director’s Office has already moved into what was the Christian Education Office. (The current church and pastor’s offices will become one large preschool classroom) We will be working closely with the different groups who share our space (Pantry, AA, Scouts, Lucy Idol) in order to ensure as smooth a summer as possible with all the construction taking place. If you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to share them with me. I know significant changes like what we are going through can often create anxious moments. However, once the project is completed and our facility is fully accessible I am more than confident the next few months of adjustments will be well worth it. - Rev. David Zerby, Interim Minister

The Diaconate committee thanks everyone who supported the Peterson nut sale. $50.00 will be given to help purchase an AED for Fel-lowship Hall. $476.50 will be given to the Ac-cessibility Project.

Miriam Smith thanks everyone at UCCC for all their prayers and cards. She sends word that her chemo is going very well and the side effects are stable. “Every night,” she says, “I thank God for my friends at church. “ Miriam can be reached at 440-653-0371, if you’d like to talk.!

The next Grace’s Kitchen opportunity is on Thursday, June 7th. A sign-up sheet is available on the board in the back hallway of church, near the lounge, and another is in the Fellowship Hall. If that’s not conven-ient, you can also sign up by calling Anne Stock at 419-565-7256. You are invited to join in this important ministry!

Women’s Coordinating will be selling RADA CUTLERY -knives, utensils and food products-

for the months of June and July (catalog expires July 31, 2018).

A catalog and order sheets will be available in Fellowship Hall; in the kitchen;

and during Sunday Coffee Hours until July 29.

Shirley Lehky (967-6536) will answer your questions

about the products. Funds raised will go toward

the Accessibility Project.

Emily Innes graduated Magna Cum Laude from

Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on May 20th.

She was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa

Honor Society the same weekend. Emily will be

attending James Madison University in the fall to

pursue her Master’s in History.

Heartland Center on Dublin-Granville Road. It is

easy to find and Joanne loves visitors. When I was

there Monday, May 21, we talked about members

of our church. She smiled as the names were men-

tioned. Ken, her husband, is taking a photo directo-

ry to her next week, to help her put more names

and faces together. If anyone wants to visit her,

but is hesitant about driving, let me know. Ellen

Rossi, my granddaughter, lives in Columbus too, so

I will be more than willing to take people to see

her. Joanne's address is 4075 Dublin Granville

same as it was when she and Ken sat in the back of

our sanctuary, lovely.”

Moderator’s letter

Dear Members and Friends, Have you wondered what we would do if we had an emergency in our church? A team of thirteen mem-bers asked the question of each other during this past month. The results of the research, soul search-ing, and experience answered that question for us. Larry Howell, Matt and Art Greiner, Joe Harrold, and Judy Williams went to a training presented in Elyria by the Lorain County Sheriff’s department and the FBI. Soon after that, an article was in the Sandusky Register, covering advice from the Erie and Huron County Sheriffs. We divided the emergencies into two parts: violent and medical. In case of an intruder, members are urged to settle their brains and bodies by taking four deep breaths, and then running to the nearest exit. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO HIDE. Members of the Safety Team have been identified to call 911, distract the perpetrator, and rush him/her. In case of a medical emergency, the team has raised money to buy another defibrillator, and will offer more training on its use. A red medical kit was donat-

ed by the Estle family and will be kept in the lounge, for easy access. Included are supplies that would be of use in the case of a heart attack, cuts, eye injuries, diabetic problems, or excessive bleeding. We are hoping to form a team of medical professionals who will agree to cover Sunday morning services. After a brief discussion , it was agreed to have Sarah Estle Henkel contact the Erie County Health Depart-ment and get Narcan for inclusion in our kit. Jim Jones suggested we print small colored cards to put in the pew hymnal racks reviewing steps to be taken in case of an emergency. This has been an example of an empowered com-mittee, a group of people filled with a passion to solve an important problem. Their work has been accomplished. Congratulations and Thank you to them. Sunday School We wrapped up the Sunday School year on Chil-dren’s Day, May 13. We certainly had a lot to celebrate that day as we also recognized our graduating high school seniors, installed our new acolytes and confirmed our newest members. The Christian Education Committee provided a luncheon in Fellowship Hall after the worship service. As we head into the summer, there will only be one Sun-day School class offered each Sunday. This class will in-clude all children from Kindergarten through fifth grade. Older youth can join us and help out with Sunday School if they would like. I am in need of people to volunteer to teach Sun-day School during the summer. You can sign up for just one week... or more if you would like. I will have every-thing for the lesson ready for you and I can even run through each lesson with the volunteer teacher. The Sun-day School curriculum is a bit more relaxed during the summer and involves Bible lessons, games, crafts and other activities. There is a signup sheet on the bulletin board out-side of the church office or you can contact Shelly Innes at 967-4894 or ekinnes@centurytel.net. Please prayerful-ly consider taking a week to teach this summer. We have a great group of children and it teaching Sunday School gives you the opportunity to get to know these children of the church better. Vacation Bible School Vacation Bible School will be held July 10-12 at St. Mary’s from 9 am to noon each day. The theme is “Shipwrecked: Saved by Jesus”. Our church is the lead church this year so I am in need of a couple of people to help out with registration each morning. It involves checking the children in and giving them their name tags for the day. We are also in charge of the games rotation so if there are any youth that would like to help me with games please let me know. If you are interested in help-ing out in the drama, Preschool or any other rotation...we welcome you! We can always use volunteers! Registration forms for children who would like to attend VBS will be available by mid-June. They will be available in the weekly worship bulletin and on the bulle-tin board outside of the church office. Children must be 4 years of age to attend VBS. Call Shelly Innes if you have

any questions about VBS. A Church Fellowship Activity The Christian Ed Committee is looking to plan a summer church activity. We are thinking of a weeknight in June where we can come together to play Putt Putt followed by a visit to Dairy Dock for some dessert. If this sounds like something that you may be interested in then watch for more information coming soon in the e-news!

Youth Report:

On Sunday, June 10th, from 12-2 pm., we’re

having a Cookout and Cornhole tournament! All proceeds will go towards Mission Camp. Please come and compete for our fabulous prizes! There will be a $10 fee for teams (2 people) and a free-will offering for spectators. We’ll have burgers (veggie and regular), hot dogs and sides.

Vacation Bible School!

Once again UCC,C will be joining up with E&R and St. Mary's to offer Vacation Bible School to the Ver-milion Community.

The dates are July 10, 11, & 12, 9 am-noon. Three days of fellowship and fun at St. Mary’s. Our summer theme is SHIPWRECKED!

The UCCC is in charge of Registration, Drama, and the Games rotation this year. Our Vacation Bible School could not happen without the help of many generous people. We are always looking for new, as well as returning, adult and teenage vol-unteers; more volunteers lighten the load for everyone.
