COMMUNICATION

The School Council is working on feedback received fromparents via the School Opinion Surveys from last year. One ofthe major areas was improving communication so this year weare going to be focussing on making sure the key messagesget to parents. We are going to improve our communication by:

1. Using SMS to notify parents of urgent, important andor timely reminders. This will be sent via MGM – theplatform that sends absence notifications to you.Your obligation is therefore to ensure that the mobilephone number of your primary contact is ALWAYScurrent.

2. Encouraging teachers to send regular news toparents and to communicate with parents about

Because communication is a two way process, both partieshave a responsibility to participate in what is offered and tostay informed so that it can be as effective as possible. Pleasediscuss issues early with teachers about your child’s academicor behavioural concerns so that something can be done aboutit. Similarly, if there are other issues that can impact your child’slearning, let us know so we can support you. We have manyfacets to our family support programs that make difficultsituations a little easier for you and your children.

WHAT IS EFFECTIVE FEEDBACK TOSTUDENTS?

Another area from the Opinion Survey that parents thoughtcould be improved was “feedback to their child from teachersto make improvement”.

John Hattie, guru of educational research, states: “Feedbackinvolves telling students how they are doing, and how theycould improve. However, while the basics of how to giveeffective feedback always remain the same, there are differentforms of feedback you can use.

There are four ways that you can use feedback to helpstudents. These are:

This year, the leadership team will be working with teachers tomake this more effective. Our planning and coaching questions

will also focus on how to give effective feedback. Ask yourchildren whether their teachers do these 4 things as that wouldbe “effective feedback”.

ONLINE SAFETY

The internet isn’t inherently bad. Facebook and Messaginghelps you stay connected to friends, get inspired for trips, laughat YouTube and have a small LOL at comics and memes onInstagram, right? The benefits are similar for your children, butthey’re still learning about safety in all areas of their lives.

Safer Internet Day was last Tuesday, 6 February, andencourages a better internet, where technology is usedresponsibly and respectfully amongst young people. The themefor this year was Create, Connect And Share Respect: A BetterInternet Starts With You. Young people are open to talkingabout online safety if you show them you understand the hugerole that social media and the internet play in their lives. Thismeans engaging them in a discussion around the issue (ratherthan just laying down rules). Creating a conversation aboutwhat the respectful and responsible use of technology lookslike can be a great way to get started. You might be surprisedto find that your children may already have solid strategies forkeeping themselves safe online.

Click here to find practical ways to talk to students about onlinesafety, help them manage their privacy, and aim to create, connect, and share respect online.

What is cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is bullying that’s done through the use oftechnology, for example, using the internet or a mobile phoneto hurt, harass or embarrass someone. If you’re experiencingcyberbullying, you’re not alone. Unfortunately it’s reallycommon, with up to one in five young Australians havingreported being cyberbullied (Joint Select Committee onCyber-Safety. (2011). High-wire act: Cyber-safety and theyoung: Interim report. Canberra: Parliament of theCommonwealth of Australia).

What does cyberbullying look like?

Cyberbullying comes in many forms, but the most common are:

behaviour, achievement or something special theirchild has done via email. Therefore, your emailaddress must be current. That is also required for thisnewsletter.

3. Using the School websitewww.caloundrass.eq.edu.au and making sure it iskept up to date and “tidied up” so the information isuseful and accurate. The website is linked directly tothe QSchools App so you can get that too to stayconnected.

4. The QParents App is a secure, online portal that hasbeen created by the Department of Education toprovide parents of Queensland state school studentswith 24-hour access to their child's information. Theportal allows you to securely access informationabout your child and communicate directly with theschool.

5. Using Facebook for celebrations and messages – butif you want a quick response to a question, don’tpost it to Facebook, but instead [email protected]

6. Encouraging parents to attend parades as manyoffers and invitations to students occur at these timesas well as reminders of rules and expectations. Youget to hear the message from the source.

1. Affirming what they did well.

2. Correcting and directing.

3. Pointing out the process.

4. Coaching students to critique their own efforts.”

• receiving mean or hurtful text messages fromsomeone you know or even someone you don’tknow

RESPECT OUR SCHOOL STAFF

Violent or abusive behaviour will not be tolerated in our schools. It's not just a courtesy. It's the law. We all have different beliefs, expectations and experiences, so there are inevitably going tobe times where conflicts or disagreements occur in schools. How we handle those conflicts can make a significantdifference to the learning and development of our students andthe positive environments we aim to foster.

All members of the community are encouraged to worktogether to prevent abuse and violence directed towardsschool staff.

DISTRICT SWIMMING

Well done to the 19 students who wentalong to district swimming trials last week.Mr Rosenthal and Mrs Daniel said thateveryone was well behaved and put in100%. Those who competed will find outshortly if they have qualified for regionals. Ihope every student has thanked MrRosenthal for his efforts in preparing

students for the carnival.

MODERATION OF WRITING

Last week I was reminded of the tremendous professionalismthat teachers display in our great school. Sitting and listeningto discussions about students work was special. Teachersshowing how in such a short time they know what and wherekids are at and how to help them. That's why my kids came toCaloundra State School. We are very lucky parents.

SOFTWARE LICENSE FORMS

This week permission forms have been sent asking for parentsto give permission for their child/children to be able to accessweb based literacy and numeracy programs that we use everyweek at school. The programs are purchased by the schoolwith a percentage of the school resource scheme amount thatyou pay each year. I understand that you probably alreadysigned one last year but we are required by the department tohave up to date yearly permissions to be completely accurateand timely. This is done to ensure that all parents and guardiansare aware that we use these wonderful learning tools. Pleasesign and return so our students can start to use the products. Please also remember that is school resource amounts are notbeing paid then there will be no access. Please feel free to callso we can help if this is an issue.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL: P - 2Thanks to all parents and families whoattended parent information sessions overthe last few weeks. We hope you now feelfully informed about what is happening inyour child’s classroom.

EARLY START

The start of the school year involves a lot ofstudent assessment. We use the ‘Early Start’ literacy andnumeracy assessments for Prep students. A number of staffhave been completing screeners with students in Prep for thelast few weeks to find out their strengths and areas fordevelopment in English and Maths. Early Start data is used byclass teachers to plan and differentiate their lessons andlearning for students to ensure that every student makesprogress from their individual starting points. It also gives usinformation about trends in cohorts that we can monitor as theymove through the school.

MINI-LIT

This year, we are starting a new literacy intervention programcalled ‘Multi-Lit’. For lower school, this will involve studentsin Y2 initially, with four groups of ‘Mini-Lit’ running every day. This program aims to support students who may not yet be‘at level’ in English or those who demonstrate gaps in theirlearning which are preventing them from making progress. Ifyou child is identified to take part in Mini-Lit, they will bringhome a permission form and information page to let you know.Mini-Lit will run at the same time as classroom reading/literacyrotations.

Mr Bopf and Iare responsible for ensuring that this looks and sounds similarin every classroom, that everyone understands how they canimprove this area of their teaching and that we learn from oneanother.
