Congratulations to the Arts Committee for putting on a very successful and highly entertaining Lip Sync Competition this week. Well done to Rangatahi who won the competition.

Organisation is a key to success, whether working in an online environment or using more traditional formats. All Year 9, 10 and 11 students should have a folder for each of their subjects. These folders may contain sub-folders of topics or learning tasks.

Parents can support their children, especially with assessment week occurring 7th - 10th June, by ensuring that their online folders are organised and their physical study spaces are also organised.

Rugby U60kg- Captain Reegan Wheeler's Match report

Rosehill College vs Kings College U60kg - 7th May 2016

It was a boiling morning at South Park, Papakura. The first half was pretty even and just before half time we managed to score a try to make it 22-10 at half time. It was a back and forth match - we would score a try then Kings would score one straight back.

I heard the ref's watch go off for the end of the match and we were down 41 - 47. We were 10 meters out from the try line so I tapped it and gave it to our big forward Josh. He managed to break the line and slam the ball down on the try line. That made it 47-46 to Kings with a conversion from the side line to come. Our goal kicker Wade put it on the tee and just sliced it in through the right side of the post. All our team ran and jumped on Wade as we had just caused a major upset early on in the season!

Tries scored by William Lintott, Malachi Renata, Wade McNabb (2), MJ Matau, Aidan Williams, Mason Stewart and Josh Lentner

Rugby 1st XV Match Report

Rosehill College were victorious over Hauraki Plains College taking the game 25-7. It was a slow start by the home team as Hauraki continued to apply the pressure and tested their defence. After a stern word to his troops by Captain Oliver Nares, the Rosehill machine began to role. Nares showed his team how to do it by scoring the first try for the team. From there the game began to turn in favour of Rosehill. The nerves settled and the points began to come with Rosehill heading into the break leading 12-0. In the second half Rosehill continued to dominate with standout players Centre, Daniel Lowther, and Fullback, Kiriama Mio-Romana, proving too strong with their incisive runs and generation of go forward ball. Mio-Romana is a real talent and one to watch for the future!

Basketball Opens

The Rosehill Open Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball teams had their first games of the season on Tuesday this week. Both of our top teams performed exceptionally well with the girls taking out their game against Manurewa 37-25 and the boys taking the top spot against Howick 51-26. Congratulations to all of the players and coaches, keep up the great work!

Badminton

The D Grade team had their very first matche against an equally inexperienced Alfriston 3 team. Our team was led by Joshua Gilmour who had superior court craft and knowledge of the game. Joshua won all his games and Franja Soriano showed good athleticism in winning all of her games.

The team beat Alfriston 4-2.

Please note that Wednesday lunchtimes is our training day and every second Tuesday after school in the Sports Centre.

Hockey

Congratulations to both of our Premier Hockey teams who had their first and very successful games of the season! The 1st XI Boys’ played against the 2015 competition champions, Waiuku and took out a strong win 3-1. Our 1st XI Girls’ also played Waiuku, putting up a strong fight and walking away with a 4-1 score!

Sale of liquor act (1989)Notes from the School Ball Planner website: http://www.schoolball.co.nz/after-ball-legal-issues/

This is the main Act affecting afterball parties. The sections of this act that need to be understood are:

Section 151: Sales by unlicensed person

Every person commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 months or a fine not exceeding $40,000 who, not being the holder of a licence, sells or exposes or keeps for sale, any liquor.

To comply with this section no alcohol can be sold. Being sold or supplied also applies to alcohol being included in the ticket price.

Section 160: Purchasing liquor for minors

1. Every person commits an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding $2000 who purchases or acquires any liquor on or from a licensed premises with the intention of supplying the liquor, or any of it, to any person who is under the age of 18 years.

2. Subsection (1) of this section applies irrespective of any liability that may attach to the licensee or any manager or any other person in respect of the sale or supply of the liquor.

3. Subsection (1) of this section does not apply to a person who purchases or acquires any liquor with the intention of supplying it to;

1. Any child of whom that person is a parent or guardian; or

2. Any other person who is attending a private social gathering.

This is the most important section for the afterballs – it means that, generally, for those under 18, only a parent or legal guardian can buy or supply alcohol.

The only exception in legislation is for a ‘private social gathering’. Exactly what this means is not defined in the legislation so is open to different interpretations. As a general rule the people coming need a personal invitation i.e. if any student can come then it isn’t a private social gathering. Remember alcohol cannot be sold at the event or included in the ticket price.

It is important to note that anyone who sells alcohol can be prosecuted if it can be shown that they knew it was to be il-legally supplied to someone under 18.

Section 153: Use of unlicensed premises as place of resort for consumption of liquor

1. Every person commits an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 who, being the occupier or having or taking part in the care, management, or control of any unlicensed premises, allows those premises to be kept or used as a place of resort for the consumption of liquor.

2. Subsection (1) of this section does not apply to the consumption of liquor

1. By any person on any premises on which that person resides, whether that person is the occupier of the premises or not; or

2. Supplied to any person by way of gift by any person who resides on the premises on which liquor is con-sumed.

3. For the purpose of subsection (1) of this section, any person who acts as, or as if he or she were, an occupier or a person having any part in the care, management, or control of any premises shall be deemed to be an occupier of the premises, but without affecting the liability of any other person.

4. For the purposes of subsection (1) of this section, premises may be deemed to be kept or used as a place of resort for the consumption of liquor even though they are open only for the use of particular persons or particular classes of persons, and not to all persons who wish to use them.

This section is open for interpretation. If it can be proved that the primary purpose of an event is the consumption of alco-hol, then the organizers of the event could be held liable.
