Chinese Cultural Board Follow Your Idols

In Confucius’ heart, the noble and well moraled people were the wise, able and virtuous; they are our idols, worthy of being followed by us. Although we are far from being one of these wise and virtuous people, we can start by doing some smaller deeds in our local community and slowly work our way up. Although I’m not a great nurse like Nightingale, I can still learn from her kindness and ability to find happiness from helping others. Although I haven’t invented a variety of electrical appliances like Edison, I can still learn from his persistent and unremitting manner and his ability to keep fighting on in spite of all setbacks. Although I can’t create touching music like Beethoven, I can still learn from his strength and braveness. Albert Kong – Year 10

Zonta Award

The Zonta Club of Adelaide Flinders has awarded a grant to Trischaye Newchurch. The grant was given to a worthy student at the school’s discretion to support high school studies. The club is a small group of women who undertake service projects and raise money to assist women to achieve their full potential. Zonta International is the global organisation of executives and professionals who work to advance the status of women through service and advocacy. One aim is to promote justice and universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Year 12 Tourism Interviews Our Stage 2 Tourism students have been researching career pathways within the Tourism Industry as part of their assessment. Students located a specific job, conducted extensive research, developed a resume and cover letter in order to prepare for a mock interview. Thank you to Kirsty Ramsay for visiting the school to conduct the interviews and sharing her expertise with students about this dynamic industry. Well done to all students that

participated. Overall students were nervous to begin with; however they prepared meticulously for the interviews, presented professionally and communicated positively. The task provides useful experience for real life interview situations that students will encounter after completion of SACE or further study. Some potential event coordinators, flight attendants and marketing managers in the making!

Lunch with the Principal Term 1 top Years 8 to 10 academic students

Salisbury Hosts Early Career Teachers Early career teachers from Mount Gambier, Bordertown, Keith and Mark Oliphant College visited Salisbury High School on 10th May. The teachers are part of the Limestone Coast Early Science Career Teacher Mentoring Project and the Teach SA program. They came to work shadow Anita Trenwith with her Biology, Agriculture and Special Education Science classes. The teachers saw the Biology tutorial in the morning then had a trip to the farm with the Agriculture class, watching the students work with horses and drive tractors.

After lunch the teachers participated in a hands on Science show run by Anita and her students. The students did a wonderful job taking the teachers around all the stations they had set up and showing them the fun things they do in Science. It was a busy day packed with lots to see and ideas for things they can do back in their own schools with their classes.

Language Perfect at Salisbury High The language students are very excited as we have purchased SKIWI a software licence for 300 students to have access to this software vocabulary tool which is integrated into the Italian, Japanese and Chinese curriculum. Language Perfect encourages students to focus on vocabulary learning at home in a fun way. At school they are keen to use what they have learned in their writing and conversation.

Students gain points for every word they learn, and can therefore compete against their friends in a fun, educational and safe environment at their own pace. The Language Perfect World Championships starts Monday 21st May and finishes 31st May 2012. All LOTE students at Salisbury High School are registered to participate at no cost to them. Students compete for their class, school and country against other students around the world, by earning points in a range of foreign languages You are welcome to visit the website for more information-www.language perfect.com.

Career Expo 2012

On Wednesday 9th May Salisbury High School held its fourth CAREER EXPO.

We were fortunate to have over 20 companies exhibiting on the night as well as Adelaide University, Uni SA, Flinders University and TAFE. Michelle, Kim and Kerry from UNISA, Adelaide University and Flinders University respectively were very impressed by the quality of questions that they were asked. It was great to see so many students exploring their university options. Well done. We look forward to promoting university open days in August and encourage all students who are considering a university pathway to attend. The Career Expo was a huge success with over 170 families attending and making good use of the experts in present. Year 10 students sourced career opportunities and completed activities for their Personal Learning Plans. It was great to see students sharing this experience with their family, friends and staff. A massive thank you to all attendees including businesses, learning organisations and the students themselves. Thank you for your support and I hope you all enjoyed the Career Expo as much as I did.

Resource Centre News Cultural Food Safari The cultural food safari got off to a spicy start with Mr Westell’s Indian curry with rice and mini pappadums. Every Wednesday at lunchtime we will be experiencing different foods from different cultures. The students are very excited and are all eager to share their recipes. Watch this space to learn more about some of the foods we will be eating.

Traineeship Shannon Carter, Year 12, is undertaking a Business Certificate III Traineeship. Shannon attends TAFE each Wednesday and is gaining valuable experience towards her qualification as well as confidence and new skills.

Chess Chess is proving to be a popular game of strategy, cunning and intrigue. Students regularly visit the Resource Centre to play chess before school and at both recess and lunch. As soon as two people play, another two will take on the challenge and all of a sudden a round robin is taking place! Students in the know are helping those who don’t know how to play. It is great to see such collaboration and support. Please see Ms Ludewig if you are interested in improving your chess skills and running a chess tournament.

Work Experience Jasmine Lloyd is a FLO student who has been gaining valuable skills and confidence through her work experience in the Resource Centre. Jasmine has been working on correctly completing forms, answering the telephone, cataloguing new books on the computer and communicating with staff and students.

Open Night Six students across Years 9 to 12 volunteered their time to support the Resource Centre on Open Night. They helped in welcoming visitors and in talking with them about the opportunities for students to support the work of the Resource Centre.

Sport

Boys Indoor Soccer The Open Boys Indoor Soccer Team travelled to MARS Stadium at Marden to play in the SASSSA 5-a-side competition. With a strong team the boys were confident they could get the job done. The boys knew they would need to get past Gleeson College to advance. They started the competition with a convincing 14 – 0 win against Burc, followed by comfortable performances of 5 – 2 vs. Para Hills, 5 – 3 vs. Craigmore, and 6 – 3 vs. Roma Mitchell. This set up a final game against Gleeson, and with both teams undefeated, whoever won the game would proceed to the finals in week 10. The students played their heart out, whilst leading 1 – 0 and levelling at 2 – 2, the boys were shattered by a refereeing decision with the boys being disallowed a goal. Gleeson then took the upper hand and won the game 5 – 2. Congratulations to all the boys that participated. Now to take that form into the 11 a side competition.

Weekly Sport Term 2 Weekly Sport kicked off with the 3 Girls’ Netball teams running out convincing winners in the first 2 rounds of competition. Round 1 Yr 8 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Salisbury East – 6 to 0 Yr 9 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Salisbury East – 14 to 1 Yr 9/10 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Salisbury East – 23 to 7 Round 2 Yr 8 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Fremont/Elizabeth – 21 to 1 Yr 9 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Fremont/Elizabeth – Forfeit Yr 9/10 Girls – Salisbury Defeated Fremont/Elizabeth – 24 to 8 Congratulations to all the girls for a great start.

Open Boys AFL The Open Boys AFL side travelled to Golden Grove High on Friday 4th May to play in the first round of the SASSSA Knockout Competition. The boys knew it was going to be a very hard game. They started slowly with a very quiet first half and were down by around 30 points going into half time. Some tactical and positional changes by Mr Coulter and Mr Hocking saw a dramatic change in performance in the third quarter. An 8 goal to 1 third quarter saw the boys hit the front by a small margin. The boys continued their form and gutsy effort to secure a grinding 6 point win. Some notable performances include an 11 goal haul from Josh Pitson taking over a school record of goals kicked in a match from Jamie Solly who kicked 10 goals in a win 2 years ago. All the boys are to be congratulated on their efforts. 8/9 Boys The 8/9 Boys hosted Roma Mitchell and Modbury for the 1st round of the SASSSA Knockout Competition at Salisbury North Football Club. The boys found it tough going in both games and came away with some sizeable loses. The boys are congratulated on their efforts.

Salisbury High wins Power Cup 2012

2012 saw 24 Salisbury High students enrolled in the Power Cup. Two teams were entered, a girl and a boy team from Years 10 to 12. To participate students were required to work together in their teams over Terms 1 and 2 to complete the SACE Integrated Learning Aboriginal Power Cup. Completion and execution of all curriculum tasks. participation in workshops and success in games defined participants ranking score in the Grand Final. Salisbury High School’s learning outcomes, quality of work, overall positive participation as well as skill saw both our teams become Grand Final participants. The boys team won and the girls played hard but succumbed to Murray Bridge High School. Both teams did us proud. Whilst it was incredibly exciting to have both teams in the Grand Final, it was the mateship, respect, determination, work output and commitment that was overwhelming. Our students put Salisbury High School on the map and everyone there spoke very highly of them. Salisbury High School were winners and won awards on many levels including: SAPOL Best War Cry Dance
