This is hard, hard work

What kept you up last night?

• Using sticky notes, write down 2-3 of your biggest concerns/complaints/fears about implementation of the Common Core

• Post them on the appropriate board at the front of the room

What’s in your control?

• Switch says when change is hard, set aside all the things not in your control and focus on what’s in your control:

• To ensure your school’s instruction is aligned to the shifts

• To rally the herd and motivate your colleagues to do the same

Critical Moves: 1% Milk

USDA wanted people to eat healthier, but that task seemed daunting. USDA researchers

decide on a critical move: Recommend consumers to switch to 1% milk.

Researchers created ads showing how a glass of milk contains as much fat as three strips of bacon and displayed mounds of fat at press

conferences.

Activity: Draft Critical Moves

• As a group, review the draft critical moves on your table and brainstorm additional ones

• Select one of the lists of critical moves• Run that list through the checklist • Select 1-2 critical moves that have the most

“yes” answers• Discuss if and why this feels like the right

critical move for you• Figure out the 2-3 things you can do next

Tuesday to get this critical move started

Ensure your school’s instruction is aligned to the shifts

• Example of critical moves 1.Research whether curriculum mapping has already been done

for your curriculum (Everyday Math, e.g.)

2.Form a building leadership team to lead curriculum alignment

3.Organize your teachers to do the “flab analysis” (red/yellow/green sticky notes on curricular resources)

4.Use in-service days between now and the beginning of school to deliver sessions on the Common Core

5.Analyze your school’s assessment data to identify areas for improvement by classroom

6.Plan how faculty meetings for September and October will be used for Common Core PD, trouble-shooting, etc.

14

• Possible critical moves 1: Develop a rich and detailed picture of the destination

– what does success look like in your school?

2: Encourage your teachers to read the standards in their grade level and the grade levels above and below them

3: Identify your first and second followers in your school and determine what motivates their elephants

4: Identify your first and second followers among your principal colleagues and determine what motivates their elephants

• Do you know what motivates each follower? •Yes? Add it to your action steps•No? Write down how you will figure it out

• Based on what motivates each follower, figure out when and how to engage each person
