Dear Parents and Caregivers

We hope to see many of you tonight at our parent teacher meeting. Come and meet staff and associated

businesses in a relaxed atmosphere in the Annex. We start at 5:30pm and will finish by 7:30pm. There will be a

sausage sizzle, tea, coffee and water available. If you need to bring your children with you, then please do but

you need to ensure that you take responsibility for them as no supervision is provided.

P&C AGM Next Week

On Wednesday 25 February, at 7pm, we will hold our AGM for the P&C. The AGM is for the election of office

bearers for 2015. The AGM will be followed by a general meeting. Membership forms are available for all as all

membership needs to be renewed at the AGM.

School Attendance – Make Every Day Count

Why is regular attendance at school important?

Regular school attendance will mean that your child has a better chance in life. Your child will achieve better

when they go to school all day, every school day.

• they learn better

• they make friends

• they are happier

• they have a brighter future.

Why must I send my child to school?

Under Queensland law, you must make sure your child of school age is enrolled and attends school all day,

every school day unless they have an acceptable reason. Illness, doing work experience or competing in a

school sporting event are acceptable reasons for being absent from school.

Principals decide if the reason given for your child’s absence is acceptable. Avoid keeping your child away from

school for:

• birthdays, shopping, visiting family and friends, if they sleep in, looking after other children, minor check ups or

hair cuts.

Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school

holidays.

Remember: Our school day actually starts in the classroom at 8:50am. Children should be at school by

8:45am.

Additional Learning Support

Last week, we started a 7 week block of intensive learning support for children who are reading just at or below

our school’s reading benchmark for their year level.

We are using our Great Results Guarantee funding for our children who require additional support in literacy.

Parents of children receiving additional support will receive a letter this week outlining the support.

Our aim is to improve the reading levels of ALL our students because we see reading as a key skill for success

in learning and life.

TIE Program Begins

Our Targetted Intervention and Enrichment program also began last week. Students in Year 1 are focussing on

Reading and Writing; Year 2 - 6 are focussing on Reading, Writing and Numeracy. In Years 3 & 5, we are also

beginning our work on preparing students for NAPLAN. In our preparation, we are not putting children through

endless ‘test’ experiences but rather preparing them for the type of assessment they will experience so that by

the time NAPLAN rolls around in May, the students will have a level of confidence in approaching the work.

Working Parties – Volunteers Needed

From the QSR of last year, we decided to establish 3 working parties to progress some particular initiatives in the

school over the next 3 - 4 years. The working parties are designed to have both staff and parent representation

and will be led by a member of the admin team.

I imagine the working party will meet at least once per month and the meeting would need to be outside school

hours – either before or after school depending on people’s availability.

The three working parties are:

1. Improving parent community engagement with an emphasis on communication, workshops for parents

2. Exploring the offering of extra curricular activities after school in conjunction with OSHC

3. Digital technology - visioning and moving forward.

If you are interested in being on one of these working parties, please let me know via email to

[email protected]

Reading Buddies – Reading!

Our Year 5 and 6 Reading Buddies are very excited this week as they await their first opportunity to test their

new skills. They will be heading into Prep and Year 1 classrooms to read to some of our younger students.

With their buddies, they will share wonderful stories of adventure, humour, fantasy and even fact. Along the way,

our young beginning readers will learn to understand that printed words have meaning and together words can

describe ideas and events and tell a story. Most importantly, they will hopefully develop a love of reading and the

wonderful worlds that await a reader to explore!

Can you help out our Chaplain?

Our wonderful Chappy Niki would very much appreciate the support of one or two parents who can help out with

a small painting project. We need 2 benches painted in rainbow colours. No prior painting skills are necessary

just enthusiasm and a willingness to help – we even supply the paint! The timeframe is flexible but hopefully it

could be completed in the next couple of weeks.

See Niki’s article further in!

String News

Lessons are off to a great start for the year. The cello students have had their instruments allocated and were

able to take them home once the loan agreements came back signed.

The Intermediate String rehearsal at 1st break Mondays started last week, and I have the feeling this will be a

very hard working and musical group of students.

Senior String rehearsals are before school Mondays. Yesterday we had our 2nd rehearsal and I am yet to see a

few students. This is very disappointing especially as it is a small group this year (16 students) so if any players

are missing from rehearsal, it is very obvious and makes it difficult for the players who are there. Please arrive

BEFORE 8am to help set up and tune. I look forward to seeing ALL of the Senior Strings next Monday.

which will be used by staff and students during the year.

Calling All Painters!!!!

We are looking for a parent / grandparent or carer to paint two benches in the school to be used as BUDDY

BENCHES. They are going to be painted in rainbow colours and used for students who do not have someone to

play with during break time. When sitting there, the Rainbow rangers and staff on duty will be able to identify

students who may need friends during break.

If you are able to assist please could you contact me on: [email protected] or via the school office.

Garden Club

Garden Club had a fantastic start to the year last Thursday, with plenty of enthusiastic gardeners, helpful parents

and smiling faces. We had a really busy morning planting lots of vegetable and flower seedlings into our newly

prepared beds. We are hoping to get a few last warm weather crops in before the days start to cool down.

A reminder that ALL CHILDREN need to have filled in a permission form before being allowed to participate in

Garden Club. Permission forms are available from the office. Completed forms should be handed into the office.

Garden Club runs from 8:15 to 8:45am every Thursday morning.

Wine and Cheese AGM 25 February 2015 @ 7pm in the Library

At the AGM nominations and acceptances are taken to appoint the 2015 Executive Committee, which is then

followed by a General Meeting. We have nominations for most of the executive positions already, so there

will be no pressure to take on responsibilities! If you would like to get more involved, or know someone who

might, the nomination form is here: Executive_Officer_Nomination_Form.pdf

Executive Committee Nominations Open for the following roles:

President (Executive Committee)

Vice-President (Executive Committee) multiple positions available

• undertakes special projects for the P&C

Treasurer (Executive Committee)

• has overall responsibility for the financial management of the P&C

• oversees compilation of documents, and preparation of annual statements for audit.

Fundraising Coordinator/s (Support Role)

Fundraising Coordinator/s can choose to coordinate the entire year's fundraising, or may adopt a single project. If

you're interested in project management or events coordination this is a great place to start!

Working Bee Coordinator (Support Role)

The working bee coordinator is usually a handy sort of person, who organises the occasional get together to get

odd-jobs done around the school. After the success of the Year 4 erosion project in 2014, the major working bee

this year will again form part of the Year 4 science curriculum.

These roles are all supported by the P&C Operations Manager, ensuring all roles can be managed in

conjunction with work and family responsibilities. If you're curious about how the P&C operates feel free to

pop in to our office for a chat.

Diary Dates - 2015 P&C Meeting Schedule

The P&C has traditionally met on the 4th Wednesday of each month, however late last year we identified that

Tuesday nights might be better for many families. Do you have a preference? Come along to the AGM to have

your say.

Friday 20th February Fundraisers Catch Up 9:30am (After Parade)

Interested in fundraising but don't want to do it all? We are putting together a fundraising committee to help with

discos, catalogues, mothers and fathers day stalls etc. Come and help put together a fundraising calendar for the

year and choose the bits you'd like to do!

Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) News

The P&C Executive, Principal Sue Phillips and P&C Operations Manager have been consulting with QCAN, the

peak body for Out of School Hours Care services to develop a strategic plan to secure the future of our OSHC

service in a continually changing legislative environment.

As a part of this process it has been identified that for large P&C operated OSHC services such as ours, many

services are moving towards having a Director role, rather than the traditional Coordinator role. The difference

being that the OSHC Director has higher level knowledge and competency in the areas of management and

pedagogical leadership, and a higher educational qualification requirement.

Page 14 of 23Mount Crosby State School Newsletter

19/02/2015http://publish.newsserv.com.au/epublisher/printfriendly.php?id=214748456612&scho...

Page 15: From the Principal Dear Parents and Caregivers P&C AGM ... · • A homograph is a word that may have more than one meaning or pronunciation. Year 6 k as in kite Spelling Rule: Mount

Accordingly, a restructure of the OSHC is being implemented and will include the new full time Director role,

supported by permanent part-time educators, a permanent part-time administration assistant and continuing

casual educators.

The role of Director is currently being advertised externally, whilst other positions will be advertised internally to

existing staff in the first instance. The high quality and commitment of our current staff gives us every confidence

that supporting roles will be filled internally, and that continuity of care is assured for the families who use our

service.

If you have any questions or concerns about this process please direct them to the P&C Operations Manager,

Lisa Evans, via email to [email protected] or phone 3813 2222.

We will be open for the April School Holidays as follows:

Week 1: 7-10 April

Week 2: 13-17 April

Mt Crosby Historical Fact

Did you know?......

Frank Hurley (1885-1962) was one of Australia's most accomplished and daring photographers, and even if you

haven't heard of him, it's likely that you know some of his famous images. Hurley was born at Glebe and started

work at the Lithgow Steel Works at the age of thirteen. It was there that he developed an interest in

photography, encouraged by his first foreman (and how we owe that otherwise unknown gentleman).

Hurley returned to Sydney in 1905, where he taught himself the finer photographic techniques and secured a job

with local postcard makers Cave & Co. Soon he was known for the quality of his photos and the risks he was

willing to take to get them - a good thing too, for the road he was going down.

In 1911, Douglas Mawson selected Hurley as photographer for the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. In all, they

shared time on four Antarctic expeditions which, among other scientific advances, showcased Hurley's

capabilities with the camera. Subsequently, Ernest Shackleton engaged Hurley as photographer for the Imperial

Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-16, the result being some of the greatest photographs ever taken. I urge you

to Google the story of the James Caird and study the photograph titled "Launching the James Caird at Elephant

Island 1916".

After his Antarctic exploits, Hurley travelled widely as a war correspondent and photojournalist, taking long stints

at the western front, Palestine, and Turkey and later venturing to wild places like the Torres Strait and New

Guinea, long before it was usual for Europeans to be there.

It happens, I suppose you were wondering, that he also came to Mount Crosby and took a couple photos that are

now held in the National Library of Australia, dated generously sometime between 1910 and 1962. It's nice to

look at the master's photographs and try to see what makes them different - being taken on full glass plate

negatives certainly gives them contrast and a clarity that digital cameras would die for. But for me, there is

another thing - and it helps me get closer to the supposed date. In the picture (see the link below), Hurley has

captured the small weeping bottlebrush that grew at the western end of the weir through the fifties and sixties

until, when I was ready to cross the bridge to school in 1968, it was daily ready to offer me a bunch of red flowers

for mum. I suppose she liked them despite their promise to shed leaves and fine petals wherever they were put.

Looking at that tree, I think it's 1958 (which by the way, is years before I was born).

Because it is under copyright, you will need to view Hurley's photograph here at the National Library Australia
