Explorers And Adventurers

Colours are an expression of life and has its full value only when it is in contrast or harmony with other colours. With the UOI of the month as Colours and Shapes, the children of the class of Explorers and Adventurers were taught about the basic shapes and lovely colours that we find all around us through beautiful songs and colourful props.

Artwork for the children comprised of making a house with simple shapes, decorating a golden star with bright sparkly glitter, the sponge dabbing of white colour on a crescent moon and making circle and rectangle impressions.

This entire week we also celebrated the beauty of colours and all children came dressed in the specified colour of the day. From lovely blues, to fresh greens to bright yellows, it was a pleasure to see the school come alive with warm hues everyday. Activities around that

particular colour of the day were also conducted and all children greatly enjoyed themselves as they understood the interplay of colours and shapes

In the area of Montessori, the children are brushing up on their colours as they work with Colour Box 1.

Special Thursday was cooking this week and the little ones learnt how to make a yummy biscuit pudding by combining crunchy cookies with butter and rich chocolate. Set then into shapes, this little cooking activity was greatly enjoyed by all.

Next week we will be teaching children about some new shapes.

Discoverers

The UOI of the month is Shapes and Colours. The children were thrilled to see the colourful props that were shown to them in the environment, as they identified the primary colours. Some of the new colours introduced to them were Grey, Purple and Magenta. The children identified different objects in the environment with their colours.

The primary shapes were revised with the children as they were simultaneously taught about three-dimensional shapes like Sphere, Cylinder and Cube. They also identified shapes that are present in our environment.

Worksheets and artwork comprised of encircling circular objects and solid shapes. A fun activity of colouring objects of different colours on a particular colour day was also conducted. The children also had fun sticking paper kites and triangular trees.

This week Montessori was all about tracing Sandpaper numbers.

Special Thursday being cooking saw the children making a finger licking and buttery biscuit pudding. The children were also read a lovely story on colours called ‘How Anna Colours Herself with Marker Pen’. All in all a great week!

Enquirers

“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn't say any other way. Things that I had no words for " -Georgia O Keeffe.

The class of Enquirers settled into their new UOI of shapes and colours by enthusiastically trooping into school in different coloured clothes for the entire week. Everyday objects now had a name for its shape and different hues of colours. The children learnt these through Montessori activities, interactive worksheets and songs like " Do you know what shape this is?, Have you ever seen a circle, This is a triangle and Out in the garden".

We used diamond shaped craft paper in different shades of green to make a slithering snake. We also introduced the concept of primary and secondary colours with colour charts in art activities.

For Special Thursday, the children had fun putting together desserts in different shapes. In Montessori we worked on the Geometrical Cabinet and Spindle Box.

Rangers/ Rangers I

This week the little Rangers discussed a very significant topic “Taking care of the Earth”. The children were made to know that our Earth is the only planet which is conducive for human life and each one of us has a great responsibility of taking good care of the Earth and therefore we discussed many do’s and don’ts we need to follow in our daily life and routines which undeniably go a long way in safe guarding our planet. To make their learning more effective children were encouraged to solve worksheets regarding the same like circling objects and pictures which are useful to the earth, counting trees and colouring pictures that show a way to help the ourplanet.Art work comprised of making roses with newspaper, making a modelof Earth with hand print and the colouring of pictures of children joining hands to clear garbage and grow trees.

For Special Thursday Cooking, children made biscuit pudding and set them into different shapes which they relished later. On Thursday we also discussed the significance of the harvest festival of ‘Makara Sankranthi’ which is celebrated in different parts of India with different names and all the children made different coloured kites.

In the area of Geography children are learning about ‘Planets and Solar system’ and they all came together to paint different planets and other heavenly bodies of the solar system and assembled it onto a beautiful chart. In Science we experimented with mixing primary colours to get secondary colours. In Montessori, children were introduced to multiplication and they

have also started reading words.

This week children greatly enjoyed coming dressed in different colours and the Rangers on a daily basis did an art activity pertaining to the given colour of the day and took it home as a take away.

The past few days has been abuzz with different activities and was fun filled, we look forward to more enriching weeks ahead.

Rangers II

With the climate change affecting our world and all efforts to lessen the impact of pollution we at TLC encourage children to start early, with our UOI Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. The process of collecting and processing raw materials that would otherwise be discarded as trash but instead turn them into new products. Recycling benefits our community and environment. Interesting worksheets and artwork are being done in class with recycled materials i.e. plastics, glass and paper.

In Montessori the children were introduced to Multiplication and Phonograms.

Language-the children continue writing and reading 3 letter words.

Mathematics-Children were introduced to skip counting by 4’s and 5’s. They were also taught the concept of odd and even numbers. Oral counting of numbers from 1 to 150 was practised in class.

This week special Thursday activity was all about cooking. A chocolate log was made

Scholars

“The purest and most thoughtful minds are those which love colour the most.”

After a long break and fun at home it was back to school. Back to new topics, new learning and expanding the horizon of ideas and thoughts. This week with great enthusiasm, children came to school wearing particular colours to grace the colours week.

Science:-

In our everyday life we see shapes, be it the shape of the water bottle, lunch box, the apple we eat or the bed we sleep in. What are shapes?

A shape is a geometrical figure that can be explained in mathematics. There are 2 dimensional shapes and 3 dimensional shapes. This week we discussed about the 2 dimensional shapes, their names and how many sides they have. We also compared each shape to our practical life, for e.g the table we write on is a square shape, the bottle we drink water from is circle at the bottom, the notebooks we write on are square shape etc. Children did worksheets and watched videos to understand the same.

Geography

In Geography we talked about different festivals of the world and the purpose for celebrating festivals. We began this week discussing about Makar Sankranti and Pongal. This festival marks the arrival of spring; this festival also is believed to be the time when the day and night are

equally long. In West of India it is known as Makar Sankranti, in south it is known as Pongal and in North it is called Lohri which signifies the end of the bitter winter by burning a huge bonfire. On this occasion kite flying is very important.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is the celebration of the last day of the Chinese calendar. The festival is symbolic of letting go of the past and welcoming a beginning. This is also a popular time for Spring Cleaning.

Each year Chinese New Year is named after an animal. It is a 12 year cycle of the following animals- rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, ram, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. This year it is the year of the monkey. Families have a reunion and decorate their houses. They decorate with red decoration everywhere as red is considered to be one of the luckiest colours of all. There is a big display of fire crackers and the older family members give red envelope filled with cash to the younger ones. Children did worksheets and watched videos to understand the same.

English

We this week did a lot of revision of sounds and phonics. Besides their regular notebook writing, children did worksheets on sentence making, same sound words, picture reading and learning spellings of days of the week and months in a year. Continuous dictation is conducted in class to ensure that children know their words and are confident about the spellings.

10

Math

Revision of number names till 500 was done in class. We also revised addition, subtraction and the multiplication of 2. Besides their regular notebook writing, children did worksheets on addition, multiplication and simple subtraction was practised. Multiplication of 3 was introduced in class.

Hindi

Besides workbook, they revised on the parts of the body and numbers from 1to 10 in Hindi.

Next week we shall learn about 3 dimensional shapes and introduce 2 more festivals of the world. English and Math will be continuous revision and in English children will be constructing sentences and writing them.

These days it is recognised that it is important for children to understand how to help the environment by recycling, and at TLC, we do a really good job! Consequently children are often the instigators and policemen of recycling in the home. If they are not, if you think your children need a little nudge in the right direction, here is the inspiration you need!

The earth may be a big place, but every little thing we do does count, and there is no better way to make an impact than practicing the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Children and adults alike should know this, but as parents, how can we teach our children the benefits and importance of recycling? In this article, we’ll explain the three R’s to you and suggest some ways for your kids to learn about them, too – and have fun while doing it!

Teach kids the three R's:

Reduce - reduce the amount of things you buy and use and you will have less to throw away. The quicker we go through products and the more packaging we throw away, the faster landfill sites become full.

Reuse - keep using the same things as many times as you can. Reuse containers and products in creative ways, instead of tossing them in the bin. When your child outgrows their clothes, you could pass them on to a younger sibling or relative.

Recycle - find new ways to use old things, tins, plastic, paper, and cardboard according to the recycling facilities available to you locally. The world’s rubbish dumps are filling up at unimaginable rates, making it important that we don’t fill them with materials that can be easily recycled and processed into other products.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

So now that you know the 3 R’s, how can you teach these important lessons to your children so they can learn the benefits of recycling? Here are some fun ideas:

• Reduce the amount of rubbish your kids create. You can reduce, reuse, recycle your childs belongings with their help. Instead of writing only a few lines on a piece of paper, perhaps they could fill a whole page with their writing and drawing. Instead of throwing away their uneaten food, they can make sure to eat their whole portion. How full are their rubbish bins by the end of each week? Can they aim to create half as much rubbish? You can reward your kids for reducing the amount of rubbish they create with a small treat!

• Challenge your children to come up with creative ways to re-use containers and leftover packaging. An empty tin can be filled with dirt and planted with flower seeds, or an empty box can be used to store your child’s collection of seashells or pebbles – use your imaginations!

• Suggest fun art and craft projects using leftover materials. Kitchen roll tubes, cardboard boxes, tin cans, egg containers – with a little creativity, some paint, crayons, glue, and glitter, these could be transformed into a castle, a doll, or a toy spaceship. Keep a stash of clean, empty containers

3

somewhere, and let your child’s imagination run wild!

• Make recycling an important part of your household. Set aside special recycling containers, so your children know where they should put used paper, cardboard, tins, glass, and plastics. If there is a local recycling centre, you and your kids can take the recycling there. If your community has a Kabari, your kids can sort the recyclable materials and make them ready for collection.

If you give your children a sense of responsibility as they practice the 3 R’s, they’ll understand the impact they can have on the world – not just in terms of helping the environment, but also in other positive ways, too. If there’s one thing they can learn from Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, it’s that the world is a big place – but one they can change for the better!
