COER celebrated 68 th Independence Day on August 15, 2014 with full enthusiasm and glamour. The function was organized in front of CAC building. Sh.J.C.Jain, chairman COER unfurled the tri colour flag. Addressing the occasion he said that with the attainment of independence we began a new era of challenges and change in our national life. He asserted that the patriots and freedom fighters who did not hesitate to sacrifice their life for the achievement of freedom were those people who had common vision. They had that indomitable spirit in them to realize that vision of theirs which they kept for themselves. Relentlessly they fought against the blowing wind of adversity but the strong will power they had made them achieve that which was known unachievable. Those fearless and visioned souls are to be the constant source of inspiration for us. Everyone present on the occasion saluted the red letter day with a vow that India of tomorrow will be made prosperous India, peaceful India and progressive India. The function came to its end with the distribution of sweets. Deeply interested in Dramatics, he has an extremely sociable & pleasant personality. After his superannuation from BHEL he worked in few private companies too including M/s Bajaj, to quote a few. A grand and mesmerizing feast was organized that laid lasting impression on the COERians’s mind.

Eco-club Eco-club with a new team of 40 members is once again ready for the session 2014-15 to shoot the target of environment cleanliness and management. Tentatively the club started with eco quiz (environmental quiz) based on environmental issues and environmental technologies followed by VICHAT (paper presentation on various environmental aspects) and so on. The club is also focusing and concentrating on Ganga protection through rallies and in addition to this the club has conducted various competitions among the students and local people to create environmental consciousness in them.

Kavi Sammelan On account of Hindi Diwas,Kavi Sammelan was organized. A total of 72 students recited their poem in first round on sept 12, 2014 and 12 finalists presented their poems on Sept. 15, 2014(final round). The event was organized in Vardhman Auditorium. The Chief Guest for the final round was Dr. Narendra Singh, an eminent professor working with Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya, Shanti Kunj, Haridwar. He delivered his speech in Hindi followed by a beautiful poem.

DISHA The Technical Committee of COER Organised a series of events to highlight the creativity of young budding engineers. The event were Compendio organized on Sept. 12, 2014, it was Collage making competition. A

Total of 102 teams participated in the event.

Aakriti organized on Sept. 16, 2014. It was clay model making competition. Each Team had to prepare a clay Mold delicately on the given theme. A total of 110 teams participated.

Engineer’s Day Celebration: An Exhibition was organized on Sept. 17, 2014. The Exhibition comprised the display the selected entries of compendia and aakriti. Also numbers of working and non working models made by student members of TRIAC were displayed in the exhibition. The Exhibition attracted a large number of students.

The Cultural Committee this year also starts with a bang. Teacher’s Day was

celebrated on Sept. 05, 2014. Students dedicated a sweet and short cultural

function for their respected faculties. An awesome skit was presented by a group of

students on “MAA GANGA” and it was much appreciated by Honorable Chairman

sir and all dignitaries and faculty present over there.

SPIC MACAY

Vision…..Initiation…..Innovation….

SPIC MACAY COER has recently organized the Manipuri dance. The dance was performed by the world renowed artist ‘Ms Bimbavati Devi’ along with her three colleagues. The volunteers worked with alacrity to give the coerians a glimpse of the vast cultural diversity of the nation. The audience were left mesmerized with the ecstatic art and extolled it with a huge round of applause.

The All INDIA ESSAY WRITING EVENT was conducted at the COER campus on the September 03, 2014 in association with RAM CHANDRA KRISHNA MISSION. The event received an ardent participation of one twenty students. A hundred of essays were in English while twenty were in Hindi. SPIC MACAY COER has been regularly updating students with its weekly series, parting the indispensable knowledge of the Indian heritage. SPIC MACAY COER shall make every effort to make its people experience the inspiration and mysticism embodied in the Indian and World Heritage.

KARUNA CLUB

Bhajan Competition was organized among students on the occasion of “Das Lakshan Parva” on September 6, 2014.

Karuna club organized a seminar on “Vegetarianism” for under graduate’s students on September 09, 2014.Ms. Anjali Tomar, an Active Member of Karuna club, was the expert and she delivered a beautiful lecture on vegetarianism.

Khasma Vani Parv was celebrated with the Jain’s student’s community on September 09, 2014. Shri J.C. Jain was the chief guest on this occasion.

Karuna club organized a seminar on “Vegetarianism” for new entrants of MBA students on September 10, 2014.Ms. Akansha Yadav, Active Member of Karuna club, was the expert and gave a beautiful lecture on vegetarianism.

The Linguistic Committee

The Linguistic Committee organized its foremost event TOPEL (Test Of Proficiency in English Language) on September 25, 2014.Like every year the committee tested the COERians reading skills.This year the committee goes a step further. As the second round to TOPEL, a reading-comprehension test, the committee decided to test the COERians listening and speaking skills as well. White Collar, a Group Discussion, was held on September 26, 2014 as a second round to TOPEL and was framed to judge the Coerians listening and speaking skills as they Discussed on the Topic –‘WHEN ALL YOU HAVE IS A HAMMER EVERYTHING LOOKS LIKE A NAIL’. The first year also participated by discussing on the topic-‘PRINCIPLES OF MAHATMA GANDHI DO NOT STAND VALID TODAY’. The events saw mass participation and the committee was able to help the students learn a little more.

Forthcoming Events

International conference on “Advances in Computing, Communication and Informatics” is being organized in association with CSI during November 28-30, 2014.

Foundation Day of COER will be celebrated on December 01, 2014 in which Ms. Smiriti Irani, Hon’ble Union Minister HRD has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest.

National Conference on “Evolution and Evaluation: Training Techniques, Tools and Methods” in joint collaboration with ISTD Dehradun Chapter during Feb.21-22, 2015.

UTU Special Back Paper Examination – August 2014

The Uttarakhand Technical University (UTU) has conducted the special Back Paper Examinations (August-2014) at different Centres. College of Engineering Roorkee (COER) was one of the examination centres for the following categories:

1. On demand papers for passed out batches. 2. Year Back Students 3. Non- Promoted Students

Thirteen different colleges (RIT, Quantum, Techoword, Phonics, RCE, BSI, BSM, RCP, ITR, Hermesh, OMBIO, Tarawati, Ramanand) was also associated with this centre.

The examination was started from August 25, 2014 under the supervision of Dr. V.K. Mehta. 276 different papers in the field of B.Tech, MBA, MCA, B.Pharma & M.Pharma were conducted. The examination being carried out according to the instructions and guideline of UTU. The examinations got ended on September 17, 2014

Internal Faculty Development Programs

COER-SM regularly organizes Internal Faculty Development Programme (IFDP) to encourage and boost the confidence level of faculty of COER-SM. Dr. V.K. Jain, Director, COER-SM has been awarded as Accredited Management Teacher (AMT) by All India Management Association(AIMA), New Delhi in September, 2014. This award has been given to him on the basis of his Academic qualification, experience and expertise in the area of production and Operation Management.

Dr. V.K. Jain, Director, COER-SM has been appointed Supervisor for guiding PhD scholar in Computer Science & Engineering at Uttarakhand Technical University, Dehradun.

Dr. Himadri Phukan, Assistant Professor, COER-SM is appointed as the Member of the Editorial Board Panel of Associated Asia Research Foundation (AARF) ASIA JOURNALS from July 2014.

Faculty as an Expert Dr. V.K. Jain, Director, COER-SM presented a beautiful

presentation on “Competency Mapping” at THDC, Rishikesh on July 05, 2014.

Mr. Sudhir Gaur, Assistant Professor, COER-SM participated in a Debate competition on “Admissions in Colleges of Uttarakhand” organized by TV100 on August 11, 2014.

Dr. V.K. Jain, Director, COER-SM, delivered a talk on Innovations at Business Conclave on Emerging Business Scenario in Serving Indian Economy organized by DOMS, IITR in Association with ISTD during September 27-28, 2014.

The exposure to the industrial process and environment gives a student an inside of the whole system. COERians undergo industrial training during summer vacation and after training period, the students are required to submit a report which is evaluated by a team of experts and is accordingly graded. A large number of COERians have undergone training in company/organizations of national importance some of them being IBM, BHEL, BRC, HCL technologies

Placement wise the effort on the part of COER are significant to provide placement for more than three hundred of COERians of batch 2014 have been selected in leading companies example Cognizant – 24, Infosys -83, Indian Army – 72, Indian Navy – 12, Mahindra & Mahindra – 4 , Accenture – 1 , Inter Globe Technologies – 7, JSW Steels – 1 , Asahi Glass – 1, Vinsol – 2, Elecrtostar – 28 etc.

The good news is that COERians are getting selected in the top ranking professional companies of India in the record large numbers.

As followed by good placement record at COER, Placement process is still going on for the batch 2014. As on past three months students also participated in the recruitment process of companies like Capital-Via, Syntel & Global Logic Technologies carried. Apart of this Campus connect programme & TIME classes were also being organized in COER Campus for the enhancement of technical as well as professional skills.

College of Engineering Roorkee (COER) family yet again welcomes Mr A.K. Upadhyaya in his second term at COER. Initially Shri AK Upadhyaya served COER during Nov 2009-July 2011.He superannuated from BHEL as Addl GM & Head of HRD function. At COER will be looking after the Development Training at COER including PDP for COERians. He will also be responsible for special development linked assignments as & when assigned by the Top Management. After joining in July 2014, he is in DG’s Sectt.
