SKILL LEVEL

SKILLS USEDThese mittens are knit in the round, magic loop style, on long circular needles. If you prefer to work with double pointed needles, using five needles will work best to distribute stitches.SUGGESTED YARN Battenkill Fibers Eaton WorstedBall and Skein Breckenridge MerinoKnit Picks Wool of the Andes BulkyGAUGE18 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in stockinette stitch.NEEDLESUS size 8: 40“ circular or double pointed needles. Let's hear it for thumbs! Thumbs are meaty and important equipment. One thumb is the counterpart to four fingers: It can work with one finger to snap, or with all four fingers to hang on for dear life. It can swing around in a big circle and flex forward and back at the top joint. The Fried Chicken Mitten hugs the thumb's curves and moves without stressing the rest of the mitten.

RIGHT MITTEN

Cuff and Lower PalmUsing size 8 needle, cast on 32 stitches and join in the round. I prefer the long tail method of casting on. Place a marker at the Start/Finish Line. Distribute stitches so there are 16 stitches on each cable, separated by a magic loop. Knit 3 rounds. Knit 12 rounds of knit 2, purl 2 ribbing. Purl 1 round. Knit 4 rounds.Thumb GussetThe numbers in italics indicate the number of stitches on the back of the mitten, which is the first segment of 16 stitches; and then the palm segment, which will grow crowded with stitches. Note: The back segment is stockinette. You can customize these mittens with a cable, a lace motif, duplicate stitch ... make them uniquely yours! Round 1: K16; Kfb, K5, Kfb, K7, Kfb, K1. 16; 19Round 2 and all even numbered rounds: Knit. Round 3: K16; Kfb, K7, Kfb, K8, Kfb, K1. 16; 22Round 5: K16; Kfb, K9, Kfb, K11. 16; 24Round 7: K16; Kfb, K11, Kfb, K11. 16; 26Round 9: K16; Kfb, K12, Kfb, K12. 16; 28Round 11: K16; Kfb, K13, Kfb, K13. 16; 30Round 13: K16; Kfb, K14, Kfb, K14. 16; 32Round 15: K16; K1, move next 16 stitches to a holder, cast on 2 stitches, K15. 16; 18 Note: the thumb appears to be huge. No worries, it will be thinned down with some shaping later.

Upper Palm and FingersMove 1 stitch from the palm segment to the back segment, so there are 17 stitches on each cable, separated by a magic loop. Knit in the round until the mitten meets the tip of the longest finger. Begin decreasing as follows:Round 1: K 15, k2tog; K15, k2tog. 16; 16Rounds 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9, 11: Knit.Round 4: *K2, K2tog. Repeat to end of round. 12; 12Round 7: *K1, K2tog. Repeat to end of round. 8; 8Round 10: *K2tog. Repeat to end of round. 4; 4Round 12: Cut yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail. Run tail through remaining loops, tighten, and fasten off.

ThumbSlip the 16 thumb stitches onto the needle. Position 10 stitches on the cable at the back of the mitten, place a magic loop, and then position 6 stitches on the cable at the palm. Round 1: K10; K6, then pick up 2 stitches at the base of the two stitches cast on for the upper palm and fingers. 10; 8 Note: there are two lonely stitches at the junctions of the thumb and palm. You can pick them up and knit them together with their neighbors to close the gaps.Round 2: K3, K2tog, K5; K8. 9; 8Round 3: Knit.Round 4: K3, K2tog, K4; K8. 8; 8Knit in the round until it is long enough to cover the tip of the thumb. K2tog for a round, 4; 4. Knit one last round, and then cut yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail. Run tail through remaining loops, tighten, and fasten off.
